Solid Stain Question?
Beth n Rod replied to stsiwek's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
Dale, You are correct, I did get them backwards. Thank you for that observation. Another reason why I think information should be given here so that it can be checked by others! :) For the record... Latex on oil=ok Oil on latex=not ok Rod~ :2eyes: -
Redwood?
Beth n Rod replied to svp07's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
You'l be fine. Just don't leave the citralic on. Make sure you rinse it. it will pull too much of the tannin out of the wood. Apply it to the deck when wet, at about 6 oz per gallon, then be sure to rinse it. Use EFC as normal. Beth -
Solid Stain Question?
Beth n Rod replied to stsiwek's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
Peeling and cracking usually indicates a paint unless it is a silicone based stain. Either is difficult at best to remove. Solid color stains fade with age. Peeling only happens if the surface isnt properly prepared or the moisture content or presense is too high. Determining which it is beforehand is best, then finding out what the brand/color currently installed is helpful. Compatability in formulations can lead to problems later on. Oil on Latex=ok Latex on oil=not ok Acrylics and silicone based stains are only compatible with themselves. Alkyd resin based sealers incorporate oils so they are compatible with each other. Prep washing to re-coat with the same product-percarb wash and neutralize with an acid. Coat the failed areas 1st then the whole surface within 30 minutes of 1st coat. Otherwise, strip/neutralize/defur/seal Crash course 101 by Rod :seeya: -

Rinse. Beth

Reed nailed it! And if the stripper keeps on working, you'll get more fuzzing...you want to minimize that. Once you strip it's really important to neutralaize as quickly as possible after your strip wash. Patience in step one as you strip Wash when the stripper has done the job, test to see where it is by scratching at it Once you wash, have your Neutralizer ready to go ASAP. (pre mix and have ready to roll) Let dwell, watch brighten, then rinse, rinse, rinse, rinse....and rinse... Some folks don't rinse, but we do since we want to avoid the powdery residue and have clean bare wood to seal up. Beth :groovy: :groovy2: :groovy3:

Need Clarification...Please Help
Beth n Rod replied to sturgisjr's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
Sturgisjr Cuprinol will come off just fine. The key is patience when you let the HD dwell. Brighten with Citralic. Once back to bare wood, go back when it's dry and hit the nail pops (if not screwed down) and sand the hand rail tops lightly and any bench seats. Defuzz the deck and put up your plastic, and put down tarps. Then seal. Beth -
HD-80 not working???
Beth n Rod replied to sturgisjr's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
Remember that you can only mix HD so strong before soem ingredients will not continue to dissolve in water while others will, The max (by weight) you can put it no solition of HD is 9 ro 10 OZ. to the gallon. Steve is right, HD is best applied with a shurflo or pump up if it is a really tought to remove finish, so you don't get the dilution. It is true that half strenght HD works great, but it also depends on: what is on the wood how many coats of it how old it is and most importantly - how long did you let it dwell??? The key to using HD is patience and application methods. Hope this helps. Call Rod's cell phone if you EVER find yourself in the field working with the product and are not sure what to do. He has more field time with it than anyone does, and helped with all the testing. He's to the point he can strip with a garden hose... Beth -
Running an ad may be expensive, but its incontestable. Once someone calls you to the residence, your in. We did flyers at first, but the time and effort it took and the response rate was terrible. I think we could have done better with a pizza picture in the ad! lol Anyway, the ad paid for itself quickly and there was no hassle when you went to propose the work. I sympathize with anyone who has to deal with the "No Solicitation" areas. Its not worth the gas just to get you there now-a-days. Rod~

Wood Tux Crystal Seal?
Beth n Rod replied to sturgisjr's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.

Wood Tux Crystal Seal?
Beth n Rod replied to sturgisjr's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
Wood Tux doesn't peel that we have seen. It is a penetrating oil. The clear will grey the way any other clear would - there is no pigment in the clear. The Honey Gold looks awesome on cedar, and provides great UV protection and won't grey fast. Hope this helps. Beth -

You can use EFC in a weak concentration if you don't want it to strip... 3-4 oz per gallon. Beth -

Gutters before and after pictures.

Great job! -
Our roofs are too steep around here. I price them high enough to get a 60' articulated boomlift if possible. Otherwise, I'll pass. Heights, its a falling fear thing...

a different version of an x-jet, shorter barrel I believe.

Not that i want to turn away any business, I will educate my customers that the black streaks will return after a few rains. Also that each time you put the gutters through the cleaning process, a layer of paint comes off and eventually you will get to bare metal. At this point they will either go with it or opt out and wait till it really needs it. Education is helpful and can save you in the end. Rod~

Alan, you mean Clorox 'outdoor' Bleach? It has sodium hydroxide in it along with buffers and oxidizers to stabilize the matrix.
