We used HD-80 on a kitchen floor in a restaurant where we cleaned the hood system, and the tile grout came clean without any pressure, but just hot water and a squeegee. The manager was glad to see that it came so clean and said he would use it as a proof to his employees that the grout actually IS white! Rod~

Need Clarification...Please Help
Beth n Rod replied to sturgisjr's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
Hd-80 will clean it, but nothing more. Acid affects the mortar joints and brick more than a caustic will. A good guess as to why the sealer failed on an a cedar deck is 1 of 2 things... He either used bleach and a film formed causing the situation or... He didnt neutralize well or rinse the neutralizer completely. Before you go anywhere with this customer, help him understand that YOU do not make the product and cannot be held liable for the product should it fail before its time and to take it to the manufacturers level where it should be. If you followed the label dierections in preparation and the product failed, blame the product not the person applying it. Another hint I may add is avoid using heavy film forming finishes on cedar. The wood is too soft to hold onto them for very long and will eventually fail. Just the weight of a person walking on the deck is enough to cause the wood fibers to flex under the finish. Also, if the deck is 2' or lower to the ground, the moisture conditions are too high for a heavy film forming product to endure. Use an oil based sealer on cedar and walk away from this customer if you dont feel confident enough to make sure you wont become his next suit. Rod~ -

Which sealers do you use? How many partial pails do you have?
Beth n Rod replied to Beth n Rod's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
Seymore, According to an individual who reported you to us, I understand you are a distributor for the product you mentioned above. We only allow advertising for our manufacturers here. It's a benefit they have in us being their distributor. We do allow others who do not sell products for themselves, for another company or to earn a commission to mention products and their uses as it is beneficial to all, but we do draw the line. In other words they simply use them on the job but don't sell. If you have any questions, please contact us directly. Beth :groovy3: -
Way cool stuff. What are common ways to tie off? I don't know much about repelling. We have used lifts for high area work. Beth

New startup company needs advice
Beth n Rod replied to EmpirePW's question in Residential Pressure Washing
Hi Matthew, There is tons of info up here. Check out the Library forum. Also you'll find we were all in your shoes to some degree at one point. You can call us any time you like and we'll help any way we can, but we are also big advocate of sharing online so others can read and learn. The Marketing forum is also a wonderful forum to read through. One thing that comes to mind, is have everyone you see a busienss card. Anyone who comes within 3 feet of you, should get one. Think I'm nuts? Are you an enthusiastic person? Show them that. Be proud, be excited, and give them your card. Look at the various types of advertising that is popular in your area. Around here there is a local paper that gets a really good draw. We love it. Also you could look into post cards at www.twigonestop.com . Beth p.s. WELCOME!!!!!!!! -
sealed, cleaned, and new wood
Beth n Rod replied to sturgisjr's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
If 8:5 worked for you to clean but not strip then I would work with that. That's a nice light duty amount. Can't wait to see more of your photos this season. Your work always rocks! Beth -
Things like this can happen very easily. I'm willing to bet at some point we'll all go down that or a similar path. How many of us have had planter that we move for a little old lady crumble when you do so? Dale, at least everyone is safe and it was an easy fix and that's the important part. I know we look at the siding before we wash, but it might not be a bad idea to look at outlets, although I guess unless you took it apart you wouldn't know about the issue that lay waiting for a victim. EFC-38 and Citralic in one step?
Beth n Rod replied to staudend's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
Understand that when you bring a caustic and an acid together, they cancel each other out. In this case they form a salt. The salt is not active. Therfore, you are left with the other ingredients that cannot do the same duty that they were meant to do. Hope this helps.,.,.,. -

Time of year Ron. Lots of guys are outside washing, working every available daylight hour. Traffic is always heavier during other times of the year. This is what equates to the week before Christmas in retail. Beth -

check this site out~: http://www.forp.usp.br/restauradora/soda/sodaingl.html Ths site referrenced above did a study on the amount of chlorine loss under certain conditions. As you can see, it has a pretty good duration, but these bottles were also kept shut air tight. Given that chlorine is the desired ingredient, at about 3% or less it becomes a low grade oxidizer unsuitable for contractor uses, but still somewhat usefull for the average homeowner who doesnt need the same concentrations as a contractor does. 12-15% chlorine stock should last anyone in the biz long enough to use it all. BTW...keep a lid on it Caustic soda is added to give it a longer shelf life, check to see what you are getting before buying. Just thought this would be helpful for others to know. Rod~ :seeya:

sealed, cleaned, and new wood
Beth n Rod replied to sturgisjr's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
EFC will do that if it is too strong on an oil based product. Have seen it do that on F&P as well.... The upside is, you don't have to use SH to strip if you need to strip and know what's on the wood, the down side is....whoooops....was a tad strong. Tony, it looks great! -

Brian, Allow a week for shipping. Beth -
Hi Rick, One of the reasons PWNA doesn't speak much to pricing, is that as an organization they have to be careful about that so as not to be accused of price fixing (as stated above). In the boot camps a range of prices (depending on which boot camp) is discussed, hourly vs. per sq. ft. etc... I hope this makes it a little clearer as to why the PWNA doesn't have a .... industry price list for example. It would be a lawsuit waiting to happen. The members themselves and the BOD are typically very willing to talk price and help though. Beth
