Thanks Ron! :) It's good to see you online again. We have all missed you here. Would LOVE it if you would come up for air long enough to spend some time here with us. Would also love it if you would host a chat on your area of expertise. ;) Our best to you and your family, Beth & Rod p.s. going to Dallas????

Ron, Just a suggestion, keep it simple, pick a one of the two days at the 8pm time slot. You can always alternate to using the other week day the following week. I'll send the email once you choose. Personally, I would say take Monday since PWNA has a chat scheduled on Tuesday and some people might want to attend both and have to choose. So I guess my vote is Monday, in which case let me know asap and I'll send the email. Beth :coffee: :groovy:

What chat topics do YOU want to see scheduled?
Beth n Rod replied to Beth n Rod's question in The Club House
One of you guys needs to pick a date (not a wednesday) and a time, and book the room on the calendar and let me know. It's that simple. I'll send and email to the members. Hosting a chat is as simple as showing up and talking about it. We're usually online off and on to assist. Beth -
We thought we would share this feedback with you all. Enjoy! We all make this happen, together. Beth & Rod

D-Limonene.... Tony is correct. ;) Rod says it is on the acidic end of the scale (wrong end of the pH scale) and will not kill mold. Bleach is towards the caustic end with a pH greater than 9.8, and therefore will kill mold. D-Limonene is an additive for detergent and boosts its cleaning power. One of its strengths is to help remove oxidation from aluminum siding. If left to dry on glass it can etch it, so be careful. Beth (for Rod) Hope this helps.

JimCrossley Msg: I was pw-ing a wooden retaining wall today. I guess I will have to wait until Monday to hit it with stain. JimCrossley Msg: I have went to high school here and then was on the road with IBM for 20+ years. Russell-Cissell Msg: What is your tep holding at? Russell-Cissell Msg: sorry. . .temp JimCrossley Msg: Russ it has been in the mid 50's for the past week in the pm. Russell-Cissell Msg: What type of stain are you applying? JimCrossley Msg: SW oil based Cupernoil. I needed a red cedar tint to go along with the redish pine stray next to a swimming pool Russell-Cissell Msg: you will be fine if the temp holds in the 50s Russell-Cissell Msg: Atlanta was a great market. Russell-Cissell Msg: What type of work do you prefer? JimCrossley Msg: Flat work and buildings under 4 storys. JimCrossley Msg: We do about 1 residential per month. Russell-Cissell Msg: We did a lot of condos there, working for property managers, but the wood was the most profitable JimCrossley Msg: Russ, 80% of our work is for condo and homeowner associations. Russell-Cissell Msg: that is by far the easiest way we found to keep steady work there JimCrossley Msg: We work with about 10 property management companies here. Russell-Cissell Msg: Do you do much work in Norcross? JimCrossley Msg: Have done a little at St. Ives and on the other side of I85 past the mall. Russell-Cissell Msg: I used to have a condo off Indian Trail. JimCrossley Msg: Sorry for the delay, I had to get my gray matter going. Yes, I know where that is. We would also use Cuprinol if we needed an off color Russell-Cissell Msg:You have to conside a few things like how long you want the product to last, if you are going to do follow up care etc. JimCrossley Msg:And the sun. Is it primarly from the south or the west and how much shade and how much yada, yada, yada Russell-Cissell Msg:Cuprinol goes on failrly easily, lasts about two years and is very consistant in quality and availability. JimCrossley Msg:Most of the wood walls I have done over the past four years are still in good shape. JimCrossley Msg:I guess that is because they are vertical. Russell-Cissell Msg:Yes, they last about twice as long, depending on sun, wind, rain, sprinkler systems and on and on JimCrossley Msg:Tell me about sprinker systems. A board member went on and on today abt. they sprinklers hitting there walls. Russell-Cissell Msg:I used to carry a key to adjust them Russell-Cissell Msg:(that can lead to trouble though) JimCrossley Msg:I leave that to the lawn maintenance people. Russell-Cissell Msg:that would be great Russell-Cissell Msg:most often a combination of a percarb. and an acid will do a great job JimCrossley Msg:What is a good stripper to use when the wood under a less than simi-transparent stain is cedar? Russell-Cissell Msg:what is available near you? JimCrossley Msg:Almost everybody. Remember I am in HotLanta. Russell-Cissell Msg:can you get Biowash StripXL? Russell-Cissell Msg:It works pretty good, it is just very expensive Russell-Cissell Msg:my honest opinion is nothing strips better than HD-80 for the dollar JimCrossley Msg:I has got to be cheaper than residing an entire home. And the best place to get DS-80? Russell-Cissell Msg:Beth sells HD-80 JimCrossley Msg:OK, that works. Russell-Cissell Msg:it will strip twp, Cuprinol, cwf, Behr and most every other stain you will run into Russell-Cissell Msg:your cost of use will be less than 2 cents per square foot JimCrossley Msg:That sounds like a winner. What is the dwell time line? Russell-Cissell Msg:about 15 min per coat of stain Russell-Cissell Msg:you DO have to neutralize with an acid JimCrossley Msg:That is painless until you said acid. What kind of acid? Russell-Cissell Msg:oxallic works fastes, but will leave the wood with a whitish cast, a blend of oxallic and citric is best for the wood Russell-Cissell Msg:Again, Beth can help you with that JimCrossley Msg:Won't a light pw get rid of the whitish cast? Russell-Cissell Msg:Paint stores sell Oxallic, however it is not priced bulk Russell-Cissell Msg:it would only if you remove the damaged wood Russell-Cissell Msg:it is the depleation of natural oils that causes the white caave to remove the "dead wood" layerst. you h Russell-Cissell Msg:forgive my typing Russell-Cissell Msg:to remove the white layer, you have to remove the "dead wood" JimCrossley Msg:I know cedar is very tendar. My house is cedar and the bumble bees do enjoy eating it. Russell-Cissell Msg:they can be a problem JimCrossley Msg:This spring they were not a problem. But every couple of years. This place starts to look like a cheese factory. Russell-Cissell Msg:How do you combat them? JimCrossley Msg:Black flag wasp and hornet spray in a black can. Spray into a hole and listen to all of the hell that breaks loose. Russell-Cissell Msg:what is your e-mail? Being informed will always give you an advantage. Devis Login: Russell-Cissell Msg:Welcome Devis, glad you could join JimCrossley Msg:Got the email. Thanks. Russell-Cissell Msg:Jim, you can average $3000.00 per week restoring cedar homes in Atlanta JimCrossley Msg:I am in the wrong line of work. :Russell-Cissell Msg:That is a great market for wood restoration Russell-Cissell Msg:Flat work is not bad either, you just have to maximise the profitability of the service you provide Russell-Cissell Msg:Atlanta is a great market because there is a strong value placed on contractors who "know" JimCrossley Msg:Let me change that. It will take me atleast 6 months of R&D to open up that segment of the market and to do it properly. Russell-Cissell Msg:customers are open to the up sell because they appreciate quality Russell-Cissell Msg:Well, the good news is that market isn't going any where Devis Msg:Fellows I am new to this and would liike some advice on chemicals to use on a cedar siding home with a oil based stain finish. What would be safe to use removing algae Is this the wrong place to ask? JimCrossley Msg:The other good news is that I have seen no compitetion in that arena. JimCrossley Msg:Devis you are in the right place. Russell-Cissell Msg:very few who "know" what they are doing Russell-Cissell Msg:Is the stain semi-transparent? Devis Msg:mjoh9871@aol.com Russell-Cissell Msg:Devis, if the stain is semi-transparent you can strip it with efc-38 JimCrossley Msg:I guess I can say that since Beth has left and she will have to do all of the work. Russell-Cissell Msg:Beth rocks! Russell-Cissell Msg:Devis, Depending on how old the wood is, you may want to brighten it as well. Devis Msg:I was thinking of a 25% by volume mix of bleach and water and some dawn det. Devis Msg:will it lighten the stain? Russell-Cissell Msg:I am not saying that it will not work, but there is a chance that it will not and then you will be doing atleast twice the work. You are always better off in the long run starting with a solution that you know will work. JimCrossley Msg:Amen from the bible belt. Yes they can be, but when you get into the ranking such as the ones you listed, I'm willing to bet none have paid for rankings.
-
It's a three month cycle from what I understand. Now if your competition was millions of sites, then yes you would have to pay for your ranking I'm sure. But for our industry, there are not enough pages for it to be a huge issue. Personally, I feel any pressure washing site can be found off of free submissions provided they are properly submitted and have decent meta data and content.
-
The thing to remember about searching the web is that keywords are very important. One person might search under pressure cleaning associations while another might search under power washing organizations, and a third may search for power washing forums, deck cleaning, kitchen exhaust school, or any number of things. All sites have (or should have) META tags. These tags are transparent to the user, but critical to search engines. Engines index sites based upon the META data. This data can be made up of single words, or combinations of words. People who are new to the net and to searching will most likely use very simple search techniques with fewer words. Boolean searching can also be done using 'and', 'or', 'but not' in the search statement. This will thin out the results and eliminate unwanted results to some degree. (example: pressure or power and washing) If you load the Alexa.com toolbar and go to Yahoo, you'll see they are #1. Then go to MSN.com and you'll see they are #2. The number refers to the ranking of the site, not the number of hits it has gotten. Hit data, such as number of pages viewwed, entry pages, time online, number of visits per user, all of that is available (usually) through the host to the account holder specifically, but is not for public consumption. I doubt you'll find all the hit info online for any of the power washing sites. (but I could be wrong...) When you perform a search (any search, it doesn't matter for the sake of discussion here) you recieve from that search a results list. The results list will say there are XXXXXXXXXXXXXX pages found matching your search criteria. The closer you are to the top of the list, the better your ranking is. Alexa.com is basically doing just that. It's saying that out of all of the web sites on the net that have been indexed (and it does appear to be a rather large index) the rank of a given site is XXXXXX. According to Alexa's tool bar, Yahoo does rank #1, and MSN does rank #2. The power washing BBS's listed above rank based upon the numbers to the right of the name of the listed site. Based upon the lowest number being the highest in rank with 1 being equal to the best, then PWNA does rank #1 among those sites listed above as it has the lowest rank number. The highest rank number is for the lowest placed site. Again this is not the same as various types of "click" statistics, and there are alot of those. Beth :groovy3:

Washington Post - Contrast In Cleanup Underfoot In District
Beth n Rod posted a topic in The Library
Contrast In Cleanup Underfoot In District Gum on Sidewalks May Hinder Revival By Craig Timberg Washington Post Staff Writer Friday, November 28, 2003; Page B01 Walk north out of downtown Washington and something unsavory happens underfoot. Black splotches, some nearly as old as the cracked sidewalks themselves, appear denser and denser with each passing step. You have crossed the Gum Line. On one side, aggressive and well-funded business groups keep the sidewalks scoured using the latest equipment, with the stated goal of making them as spotless as Disney World's. On the other, an overburdened city government throws up its hands at the seeming impossibility of taking on yet another task. "People shouldn't spit gum on sidewalks," said D.C. Public Works Director Leslie Hotaling. "I wish people would just keep it in their damn mouths." The problem is more than aesthetic. Washington's renaissance under Mayor Anthony A. Williams (D) has been powerful but uneven, say residents, community activists and merchants. They contend that cleanliness equals safety in the minds of visitors, and that old gum -- along with graffiti and window bars -- subtly dissuades shoppers, tourists and even potential residents and commercial investors. The gum, in other words, hinders the improvement of neighborhoods, slowing the revival even of ones that are seeing major new investment. Downtown gleams. Capitol Hill is increasingly quaint. But a few blocks north, H Street NE often is strewn with garbage and beer cans. Georgia Avenue NW looks dingy despite the growing affluence of surrounding neighborhoods. And even on 14th Street NW, which is stirring to life north of downtown decades after the riots chased away businesses, the gum splotches are an unwelcome reminder of a troubled past. Moving from a transitional neighborhood, such as along 14th Street, to an enduringly healthy one will require removing the visual cues that can deter visitors, experts on urban retailing say. "You don't want to lose what makes a city a city," said Valecia Crisafulli of the National Trust for Historic Preservation's Main Street Center. But, she added, "What's important to do is not cross that fine line and look shabby, unkempt or, worse, even unsafe." Retail consultant Robert Gibbs says shoppers form impressions within seconds, based on factors such as lighting and cleanliness. A sidewalk made splotchy by gum is just one of the signals that turns off visitors, dimming their perception of merchandise on sale there, he says. "It's very subliminal," Gibbs said. Even store executives, who are increasingly eager to tap urban markets, have similar reactions when they scout possible locations, he says. "A lot of time, they won't even get out of the car because there's garbage on the streets, there's graffiti," he said. One resident near 14th Street, community activist Ramona I. Bowden, grew so frustrated that she wrote a letter to the mayor last month, demanding an investigation. "The city streets are spattered with unsightly and unhealthy gobs of chewing gum, which become ugly DIRTY black spots," Bowden wrote. "This makes the Nation's Capitol City look like a third world country." Gum is a mixture of base, sweetener, softener and flavorings. It is the base, which historically was made with natural resins, that makes gum sticky. Once it hits a sidewalk, gum adheres to the concrete and begins collecting dirt. It quickly stops being a hazard to passing shoes but becomes almost entirely black, hard and impervious to rain, wind, sun, snow, ice. "It looks terrible. It really does," said Addie Green, owner of the Islander Caribbean Restaurant & Lounge on resurgent U Street in Northwest Washington. "It's all over the city. . . . Once you notice it, you can't help but keep looking." The stubborn splotches, which pervade commercial areas throughout the city, are most common near bus stops and Metro stations, as well as outside eateries, bars and other places where chewers routinely dispose of their gum. In few places is the problem as bad as in Adams Morgan, which maintains a whiff of seediness despite a booming club scene and rising housing values. "People have an image of Adams Morgan that we're dangerous, that's it's messy," said Constantine Stavropoulos, who owns a coffee shop and diner there and heads the Adams Morgan Business and Professional Association. He isn't suggesting that a neighborhood cherished for its funky vibe should go sterile. But Stavropoulos says removing the gum would help broaden the appeal of an area already popular among the weekend bar crowd. "We want clean character," he said. "You can be an artist, you can be bohemian -- but take a shower every day." Cities the world over face much the same problem. Nearly 1,000 workers teamed up last year to remove 600,000 wads of gum from Tiananmen Square in Beijing, news reports said. In Japan, gum manufacturer Lotte has its employees spend time scraping gum off Tokyo streets as a nod to environmental concerns, the newspaper Mainichi Shimbun reported. And in Europe, a Dutch company has developed gum eradication machines, now popular in some cities on that continent, that use low-pressure steam and solvent. The machines, under the name GumBusters, have been used in the United States by business groups, universities and sports facilities. In Washington, the Downtown Business Improvement District owns two of the machines and has four workers to run them. Crews started their first gum-removal blitz in April 2002 and cleaned up an estimated 300,000 pieces of gum by the time they finished the business district's 142 blocks a year later, said Frank Russo, a business district official. Each piece of gum takes about seven seconds to remove once a worker puts the tip of the machine's wand on it. With the steam and solvent aimed at the splotch, it melts away, giving off a whiff of mint or fruit. A faint mark is left behind, but no more. "We have probably the cleanest sidewalks in the United States, if not the world," Russo boasted, but he is not yet satisfied. He plans to have the gum crews eventually hit every downtown block three times a year. Business improvement districts covering Capitol Hill, Georgetown and the so-called Golden Triangle south of Dupont Circle also have invested in various forms of gum removal, though less heavily. Gum also still mars some downtown blocks, particularly near bus stops and takeout joints, where it accumulates faster than Russo can get it cleaned up. But it hardly compares with the rest of the city's commercial areas, which get gummier by the day. A potential solution stops short of having city crews take on a costly new effort, the mayor says. He suggested that tax breaks could be created to encourage the formation of more business improvement districts. Yet he bristles at the suggestion that gum on the sidewalks highlights inequity among neighborhoods or some shortcoming in services. "When I became mayor," he said, "we were talking about mattresses and sofas on the street." Staff writer David Nakamura contributed to this article. -
The information on ranking was probably provided by Alexa.com. They have a free toolbar and it shows you the rank of any site you visit.

Believe me, I have seen women do all kinds of things when shopping. It makes me nuts, since I'm not a die hard shopper. For example, I hate the "rack encroacher". Rack encroachers pick up and hold an item you want and will walk around with it even if they are not going to buy it. If they think they like it somewhat, they protect it just in case they decide to get it. Many times they discard it in another area of the store. I have also seen the item in question be WAY out of thier size range. C'mon ladies, if you wear a 14, leave my size alone please! Then you have the one that snag it right out from under you. These are the same people that cut you off for a parking space. You reach for something and their hand goes in and out like the flash and POOF! It's in their cart. It's alot like the person who turned in front of you and took a parking space although your signal was on and you were in position, and had been for several minutes while the prior car was loading and getting ready to move. I hate it when that happens. Beth

open the photo in you photo editor on your PC. Then look for a feature thea says something along the line of reduce or adjust Image Size or edit image size. Make sure the proportions are "constrained", and then reduce the image size... If it is under 2mb you can email it to me and I can fix it. Beth -
