Sad to say it's true. Artillery fungus doesn't come off. But look at the bright side, next time you'll know what it is ahead of time. Over the years we have found it's best to say that a house wash will remove mold, mildew and algae. There is an article about the fungus here: http://www.thegrimescene.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=195 Beth

It doesn't offend me. There is a difference between using someone else's work for your own advertising and taking credit without permission, and referring back to a photo for study. Beth -

You should add that one to the photo gallery so folks can send Thanksgiving e-cards!!! We have that functionality. We can do this with Christmas cards, birthday cards, etc too. You can choose background colors, font, colors for the font, etc when you send cards from the gallery. All these fun things have a place here just like the business photos do. Let any of us know if you need help with an upload to the gallery. We're glad to help. Beth & Rod Administrators :groovy: :groovy3:

Hi Morgan, I never saw the post, but based on what others have said I can believe the response was not something you want in a public forum. I'm sure you did the best thing for the BBS. Beth :groovy3: -
Mahogany door turned black!
Beth n Rod replied to Earl Johnson's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
I agree. You'll have to redo this one. Cabot makes a product for hard wood that we have used on Ipe and teak, and you might want to check its use on mahogany. Beth -
Hey Paul... Put him in the photo gallery so he'll get shared with others :) Beth

New/Old wood wetness
Beth n Rod replied to JustMe's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
They have two prongs that you stick into the wood, and then you push a button which reads the wood moisture content. It's displayed on an LED readout. It comes with a carrying case and a booklet that describes various woods and their ideal moisture content. http://www.delmhorst.com/products_wood.html scroll to the bottom Features: Microcontroller circuit for increased reliability and accuracy 12 bright LEDs — great for reading in direct sun light or dark areas. Gives the most precise readings of any LED meter available today Moisture content range from 6% - 30% Connector for an external electrode Industry only three-year warranty The perfect tool for a hobbyist, woodworker and home inspector It's a GREAT tool. It's what we use ourselves. Beth -
Company website using others pictures
Beth n Rod replied to John T's topic in Business Topics & Tips
I have been asked by one person that I built a web site for to snag others photos, and I flat out refused. This person told me he had permission to use them so I called to verify and it was untrue. People do take others photos all the time, it's one reason we add bevels, shadows, and even our name, to make it harder to use them since we don't want others using our work. Having said that I will say that in my opinion any reputable web designer will not steal things from others sites, since they know the value of time put into creating the sites, the graphics, and so forth. All of my clients send me photos or cd's, and if they don't have photos, I tell them to get a camera and get busy. Your first couple of jobs will get you rolling just fine and can be replaced with other newer ones. I have also seen guys hide behind the "my web designer did it" thing when there is not web designer, they built it themselves or when they snagged the images and send them to the unsuspecting web designer. Protect your name and your logo first and foremost. Trademarks and copyright are not inexpensive but are valuable and make you worth more money. Watermark your photos. Protect your text. Beth:soapbox: :bullistic :taz: p.s. Why on earth did the thread get deleted from Steve's BBS? This is an important ethical issue and it surfaces several times a year. Well no worries, it's staying put here. -

We use a moisture meter designed for use on wood. Too bad it's not like choosing a good mellon. A thump won't do it... Beth :groovy: -

Hi Rob, The law does not apply to residential as I read it, with regards to washing decks. It states that runoff into the ground is fine, but what isn't is water that goes down the driveway for example going into a storm drain rather than a sanitary sewer. These can vary from state to state dependng on what' the states have done to uphold the EPA laws. This is my understanding of it, as it applies to Maryland at least. For commercial work, I would immagine reclamation is key regardless. However, since the law just went into effect in March of this year, not all states have had a chance to respond and to act accordingly. They will. They have no choice. The critical thing to remember here is we all have an opportunity to help to nsure we are protected as an industry and that we can work to serve the letter of the law without being driven out of business by a poorly written law. Get involved with others in your area and help to make sure your state listens to those who do this for a living. Just a suggestion... Beth

New Deck Prep
Beth n Rod replied to Cannon's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
To remove mill glaze be gentle. Use EFC-38 or another percarbonate based cleaner, then brighten if needed depending on the spiecies of wood. I do not suggest Sodium hydroxide on new wood unless we are talking maybe 20% strenght, and even then I would rather go half strength on a percarb like EFC-38 and wash gently. Defurr the deck, pound in nails and prep, and seal. Never wait to seal wood. Would you go bake in the sun at the beach for 6 says and THEN on the last day of vacation put on sunscreen? No...you would end up with a horrific sunburn. UV damage happens regardless of when the deck was built or the lumber was milled. Check your wood moisture, and seal that puppy up. Beth;) -
new deck
Beth n Rod replied to Dan B's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
At a high enough concentration, bleach will furr the wood. (Sodium hypochlorite) It's used in paper mills to destroy the lignin which holds the wood fibers together and reduces it to pulp. By destroying the lignin you destroy what holds the wood fibers together. Therefore, the wood will furr. Caustics (sodium based products) will cause the wood to furr. Beth & Rod -
Beth stripping....a deck.
Beth n Rod posted a question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
No kidding! It's about time I put up a photo of me doing some power washing. Usually Rod's or the guys are in the photos. Today, Rod snuck back to the truck and took pictures of me for a change. So in case you were wondering if I know how to do this, you bet I do. :groovy2: This deck was filthy...it was on the north side of a home with very mature tree growth. The owner had applied a solid stain (creamy color) then let it get dirty, then sealed over it with Wolman F&P Natural. (of course much of this came back to them as we discovered the layers they had forgotten about....AHEM!) We began with EFC-38, which took off the Wolman F&P nicely, and left the beautiful, unevenly applied, with stop and start marks showing thru...homeowner applied beige stuff. Some boards had very little product, some looked to have three coats. We broke out the HD-80 and mixed it up at only 2 oz. per gallon. It melted it (mystery product) off, although we believe the EFC-38 begun that process. We brightened with Citralic. Looked great when we left. The photos are during the strip, before neutralizing. Beth :groovy: -

Hi Melissa, There have been times that I have had homeowners (women) tell me they were glad I was a woman and not a man, as some feel uncomfortable with a strange man coming to their door. So long as you know your business you'll get the respect you deserve. Good luck in all you do! We're glad to see you online! Beth ;)
