fence/deck job
seymore replied to jbruno's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
Nice job James  The only thing bad about pools is the chlorine will wear the stain off faster.I'll usually tell customers with pools the deck floor around the pool may need to be touched up where needed. You have a close up of the deck floor? -
I thought of you Woodies on vacation.

Wow that deck looks pretty bad but it can be saved with some TLC  -
backbrushing pads
seymore replied to clean kentucky's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
Doug,The Padco pads will hold up like night and day compared to those Shurline pads. You just have to soak the pads real good in stain cause the lambswool will leave some fuzzies like on rough fences. It does stop once the pads are soaked in stain. -

That's funny i had a friend having that same problem with them sliding off.I told him about the Padco and he loves them just for that reason. The padco have folding clips on each side holding on to the arm it's attached to. -

Wow you go thru 2 pads on a deck?? My pads last me 2 or 3 decks sometimes more depends how old and splintery they are. If you are using a stain with mineral spirits in it that will eat away the sponge also. -

When the pads are new the rough wood/splinters can be tough. You need to soak the pad in the stain real good so it slides over the wood. The older splintery decks usually cause you to come up with a porcupine on a stick! -

Here's what i use for paint pads it's tough with splinters with the long nap but they do last longer than shurline pads. http://www.epaintstore.com/brushes/padco_paint_pads.htm -
Deck with Pool
seymore replied to tropical wave's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
Mike you could always sand the railing I know it would make the WRCLA happy if you did.;) I would try real hard to cover the pool completely if you can.The chems won't hurt the pool as bad as the wood fibers will be hard on the pump. -
What is the solution?
seymore replied to ACSTravis's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
Behr acrylics are tough to get off but not impossible.I've removed Behr acrylics with a sodium stripper that i make myself. It does take stronger mixes and a lot of dwell time and multiple strips if needed. It's always best to do a test spot when bidding strip jobs. Try HD-80 or F-18 i've heard guys getting good results with both. It's always possible to remove the stain but also depends how much the customer is willing to pay to remove the old Behr Cr@p. -

Scott my mom just passed away last summer from complications caused from her being a diabetic. She had been going thru dyalisis 3 times a week for the last 6 or 7 years or so. I've never been check but i do think about it being in the genes.I just hate doctors and i'm always afraid to hear them tell me something i dont' want to hear. You can call me sometime and i can talk about what i saw her going thru.

Karen, The final stain color will change in time but if you are getting a yellow color now i doubt it will change to anything real drastic. It will only lighten up as it cures but the yellow tint you are getting now will still be there. Stains like TWP 100 series enhance the natural wood tone of your deck and your deck being cedar it's natural color has a more yellowish golden natually. That series of TWP has a light pigment so that's why you are seeing more of the natural golden yellow tone of your wood. It's more of a transparent stain than the higher series TWP 200-300 that have more pigment which are more darker semi-transparent stains. These stains will change the natural look of your deck and the color tone you choose will be more noticeable. I would use chlorine bleach this time just like i use all the time working with a similar product as TWP.It will lighten the deck up and remove some of the stain already applied but not completely. It would be easier than trying to start all over by stripping the 101 stain you have already on the deck. I wouldn't strip the deck completely because the oil already in the wood is still good oil just wrong color tone. Please don't waste your money stripping the deck completely and then now have to use twice as much stain. You might not be able to achieve the exact color tone this time but lighten up the 101 cedar tone with the light bleach/soap cleaning. Then use the TWP Rustic tone you are looking for and it will probally be darker but in time it will lighten up in time. Feel free to call me anytime I'll be glad to help.
