Virginia Beach Deck Restoration

Question

I've had some that were as bad, but none this big that was as bad as this. Started this past week with 'stripping' and cleaning. Expecting rain this week but had hoped to extensively sand and prep, and have it stained the end of next week - weather permitting. Thought I would throw the 'before' pics out in the meantime.

Tony,

I agree with Beth. Some of those floor boards appear to need replacement.

We're currently working on a restoration similar to your job. New owners purchased the home in December of last year. The previous owners did not even clean the wood for I'm guessing 12 - 15 years! Built up dirt and petrified mold/mildew nearly as hard as coral in sections. Quite difficult to clean.

16 floor boards required replacement just to keep the deck safe for use. The balustrade top rail was very bad and is being fully replaced. The gazebo shakes are beyond their lifespan and will need to be torn off and redone, but we do not do any roofing. Oil will help but many of the shakes are nearly paper thin.

You can save these neglected wood structures but it takes a lot of work. You have quite a project on your hands!

Got backed up with a couple of wet weeks but finally was able to go back and finish up. Replaced 6-8 boards (most of which were original he had under the deck from original construction), extensively sanded, and tightened many boards with new screws.

Hey Tony Great Job!! Looks fantastic.

Man I used to salivate to powerwash decks like that with that grey weathered not sealed or anything in years look. Staining them was another story but when completed they looked great.
