I don't know Dan. could be the acrylic in my lungs, the hot bath, or the ibuprofen with 2 malted cooler chasers.. :)
  2. hd-80

I'll second that.... ..oh and $75 for stripper is out of this world.Next time you got a tough catalyzed finish to remove think about going to an autobody supply house to find Aircraft Stripper..that or Jasco will remove just about anything... these outdoor stain removal jobs though only require a super concentrated mix as Dan mentiones along with a good dwell. Take your individual ingredients and multiply by a factor of 6x to allow for downstream applications... :)
  3. Oh my god!...ALL OF THE ABOVE...I can hardly move after todays job of sanding railings, defurring and stainign a raised deck, pergola, and lower deck.. Nothing about it was easy...the poll is missing above ground wood care.
  4. Heat Stroke FAQ's

I stayed hydrated but didn't help much today. Just am not used to this spring heat yet. Job today had my face all flushed to where I had to soak my head twice under a hose..
  5. Matt,, Are you forgetting all the sore muscle a day after shooting raised decking or pergola job?. Shot a monster yesterday for 4 hour straight and then after taking a short lunch I could barely move to leave..lol ..was nice admiring the work though.. :)
  6. White Haze from DIY'er?

Don't let'em off easy.. strip the whole thing and restain..make a few bucks :)
  7. First Complaint of the season

The idea is so foreign to me...but as I say that there is a water meter being installed in my yard this very minute... They marketed the idea of it based on most people saving money.
  8. Not so happy

Ya can't tell how that is gonna be after a week or two to where ya can support starting over. If anything ya might have to fix the shinies sooner or go back and clean them up when done. I would have done the whole thing at once and made it clear that it needs to settle awhile. I believe Ken is correct with the idea of not steering a customer to conclusions. You must be armed with solution and answers to their questions of course but rarely would it be to start over or a change in product in middle of a job...good luck there..
  9. Linoleum Floor Help!

Jud, PLEASE STOP!! That is not current methodology dust mop mop and bucket putty knife mr clean magic eraser 3m Hi PRO black strip pads quality stripper small 17-20" autoscrubber or low speed 17-20" swing machine/ wet vacuum vinigar or neutral floor condition rayon blend mop or micro fiber hard/durable finish...Plaza may work good but Vectra might be better for doctor office.. fan..snail shaped carpet fan prefurably ..Hope this gets you out there on the right foot....pssst.. it will be as slippery as snot if there is any decent amount of finish to strip so make sure you can skate.. be careful!!
  10. Three times already this year

Beginning to end for me. Rate is adjusted as to it being a clean or strip and/or raised work. Then breakdowns are deck, rail, step, lattice, pergola, stain...None of this stuff where the strip labor is this and the staining is that fer me..That is internal.
  11. How long after...

Depends on expectations. A dense hard wood like ipe may not alllow stain to last a year. Pratice is to let it age or try and remove some of its natural extractives so stain will be able to get in and take grip. Others expectations on other woods could be that the elements can cause damage, graying, warping, etc. in as little as a couple month. My personal practice is to get protection on as soon as any mill glaze situation or moisture is taken care of naturally or artificially. thinner the boards involved the more is at risk is my feeling on damage... Looked at a 4 month cedar fence install the other day and you could slip a finger in along the fence it was warped so bad.

...been thinkin it is non curing paraffinic myself..is'll news to me Frank.. I did read on one site that TWP claims it is film forming: WOODguard > WOODguard® > Compare > WOODguard vs TWP 200 Series And than here is another that seems to confrim what Scott said: TWP 200 And Scott..here are the two sites I see the other color options: MFG Sealants TWP Total Wood Protectant - TWP Series 200 ..geez, sorry about this Dan...yer thread is all hijacked

Learn somethin new everyday..thanx Scott! Do tell, was it one I could get and one not due to voc? oop- can't get the 100 where I'm at : http://www.twp100.com/100msds.pdf But the 200 would be a go: http://www.coastalsealants.com/200%20TWP%20MSDS.pdf Apparently they claim the 200 as a film former as well... should we consider it comparable to WR stain and seal and the 100 comparable to the wtw minus the wet technology? Scott can you please speak to this and confirm your color availability on the 200? I've overlooked it on your site on ocassion due to the bland look of the sample chips. Some sites show richer palette that include russett and redwood colors for example. Some show them to be available without being custom colors..Do you think the butternut might be richer than shown on yer site? from what I can tell of other sample examples around the net it is much brighter towards red. Maybe samples are available? ..anyways..back to topic of wtw :)

nah..looks good Dan. To rephraze what I was saying...do ya think what ya used has less room to fade than say a darker one? Think as a customer I would rather have consistant look in a lite stain than a huge tint/shade swing from going with a dark stain that can't cut it. Sealerguy, ...no matter pigment a paraffinic as twp is gonna loose it's oils and pigments from the elements, washings, foot traffic, etc. in a no holds barred fashion from the get go as they don't utilize resin entrapment. Is not really a pigment problem persay but rather an entrapment problem. The more ya put in though the longer they may last in their activity of leaching the goods to the surface in order to be seen...On other hand these film former type stains as wtw are meant to trap the oils and should not present as such.
  15. stripping paint

Or Meth Chloride sold as jasco or bix. :)
  16. What is it called?

Then we should address his questions best we can... For the white- oxalic acid and feeding the wood some dark stain, or burn it.. :)
  17. Pricing first Deck

Lower..for reasoning see: First Deck Estimate
  18. Five story inside windows??

sounds like a huge scaffolding job or job for spiderman
  19. What is it called?

Ok Beth..not "refeed" but rather "feed" that wood after deposits removed! What ya mean "if it is at the bottom"?.. he said it was and the pictures show as such..least on my screen anyways. He aired only his interest in situation so didn't feel a need to describe a whole process...Forget I said oxalic or feeding wood Pat. :)
  20. Reaching out to a fellow contractor

I think many such people could bennefit from that Dan and you may even gain a friend out of it! Realistically though there is a huge percentage of really good pro's of their trade that are just not into learnin new tricks. You'de think everyones got the net but nope they don't nor are they interested. Many also can see nothing but volume or keeping status quo. Soem even show personality traits of going headlong before research. If all did their research on even just the basic thing of price all would get along better both contractor to contractor or customer to contractor relations...Ok, think that opens the door enough for the next guy to talk about lowballers..lol :)
  21. Unreliability

I don't like relying on 3rd parties that don't value your customers as you would. When it comes to passing work on I have learned not to do it unless I know them real well. Thought I learned it real well years ago when relatives screwed me abit but nope.. I tried some networking of roof and fence work that I don't do this past winter and it wasn't the best experience. I ended up owning upon my reputation their shady disappearance. Florin, If your so busy that your schedule is that tight then you got to recognize which ones are more open to being pushed back and build into those deals a wider start to completion understanding....As it ended up you basically gave up due to not enough flexability. If you had had time I would hope that you would have driven 100 mi to get a machine or goto a store and buy a cheapy on yer credit card.. Regardless, don't take it too badly , we all make mistakes. One thing that can be said about contractors is that there is big difference between them real busy contractors that got no time to take an initial first call from a customer and the ones that hold them less important once they get them to sign. I hear regularly of painters and construction field contractors that can't fit things in until like June and it better they say it as such rather than allowing customers be in limbo. I respect those guys and apparently others do too. They book them months or seasons in advance and pay them top dollar cause they know they will get both quality and reliability they can count on or plan around.
  22. What is it called?

My best guess is there is two issues on the white...sprinkler/watering damage is main issue and then sun bleaching. The water leaves minerals that turn white when dry and leach the naturals out. The sun hits the bottom more than the shaded tops. Solution: use oxalic, refeed the wood, and/or change the watering and shading
  23. Sealer Choice for HVLP

Almost anything of a stain works with hvlp... thicker paints may present issue if not well thinned. Might want to run a search on hvlp to review some of the infos already offered up..
  24. Dateline or 20/20 did show on how much bs is involved in the field. Think it was some sill and plumbing areas they set up with a lite coating of mascara to try and trick contractors into making false claims or taking advantage without testing. Was sorta unfair to be doing that to them but some bit hard and tried selling home owners on fancy/expensive removal schemes before testing what it was they were looking at. Yes it isn't at all same as a house full blown growing fur and such inside the walls in a disaster or closed up foreclosure situation that Rich mentions but it speaks volumes to me on guarding pocket book and buyer beware. Yea ya don't want to be living in and breathing any kind of the stuff be it a killer version or not so yea it has to be taken care of properly by at least using proper respirator. I can only assume disturbing it while dry by way of cutting into walls to get at it would be main problem. Probably just like asbestos abatement involving huge range in pricing due to fear tactics. I don't hate that a guy gets to charge more for protections, swetting more, or cause they have more knowledge. Can't say I care much for regulatory mandates that tend to promote undo fear though in order to create a whole industry that many might claim is oversold, price inflated, or exagerated. Mystification seems involved more so than actual educating the people and I can't say I care for that in a trade... Co2, That is good info to have..Thanx for contributing and being helpful! :)

That Whg? It be good to know if any fade or uv damage is not proportional compared to other colors. You know if it starts out a shade and doesn't turn much..
