As seniors age, maintaining good health becomes more challenging. One of the most important factors that contribute to their well-being is proper nutrition. In Wellesley, MA, families and caregivers are increasingly recognizing the importance of balanced meals for seniors to ensure they stay healthy, active, and mentally sharp.
A well-balanced meal plan can be the key to promoting energy, preventing chronic illnesses, and enhancing overall quality of life for seniors. In this post, we’ll explore why balanced meals are so crucial for seniors, how they impact the body and mind, and how to create the perfect meal plan for your senior loved one. Read more for tips on how to make meal preparation easier and more enjoyable for your senior loved one.
The Role of Balanced Meals in Physical Health for Seniors
As we age, our bodies undergo various changes, including slowed metabolism, reduced muscle mass, and a higher risk of chronic conditions such as heart disease, diabetes, and osteoporosis. Balanced meals are essential to support the body’s needs and prevent or manage these conditions.
A balanced meal for seniors typically includes a mix of proteins, healthy fats, whole grains, fruits, and vegetables. The benefits of such meals include:
Maintaining Strong Bones and Muscles: Adequate protein and calcium intake are essential for bone density and muscle health.
Supporting Heart Health: Balanced meals that include healthy fats, fiber, and low sodium can help reduce the risk of heart disease.
Boosting Immune Function: Vitamins and minerals, such as vitamin C and zinc, help strengthen the immune system.
When seniors receive the right nutrients, they’re more likely to stay physically active and healthy, reducing the risk of falls, illness, and other complications associated with aging.
Enhancing Cognitive Function with Balanced Meals
It’s not just the body that benefits from proper nutrition; the mind does, too. Cognitive decline is a common concern for aging adults, but a diet rich in brain-boosting nutrients can help seniors maintain cognitive function and memory.
Key nutrients that promote brain health include:
Omega-3 Fatty Acids: Found in fish, nuts, and seeds, omega-3s support brain function and can reduce the risk of Alzheimer's disease.
Antioxidants: Fruits and vegetables like berries, spinach, and broccoli contain antioxidants that protect the brain from oxidative stress.
B Vitamins: Vitamin B12 and folate are essential for cognitive health, helping prevent memory loss and confusion.
By incorporating these brain-healthy nutrients into meals, seniors in Wellesley, MA, can boost their mental sharpness and reduce the risk of cognitive decline.
How Balanced Meals Improve Mood and Mental Health
Seniors often face challenges like isolation, depression, and anxiety. Nutrition plays a significant role in regulating mood and supporting mental health. Balanced meals can help manage symptoms of depression and anxiety, which are common among seniors.
The connection between diet and mental health is strong:
Healthy Carbohydrates: Whole grains and complex carbohydrates help regulate serotonin levels, a neurotransmitter that impacts mood.
Magnesium and Zinc: These minerals, found in foods like leafy greens, nuts, and seeds, can help reduce symptoms of anxiety and improve sleep.
Proteins: Protein-rich foods provide amino acids necessary for the production of neurotransmitters that regulate mood and mental clarity.
By providing meals that contain these essential nutrients, seniors can enjoy improved mood, greater emotional resilience, and better mental well-being.
Creating a Balanced Meal Plan for Seniors in Wellesley, MA
A personalized, well-planned meal is key to ensuring seniors are meeting their dietary needs. Caregivers in Wellesley, MA, can follow a few simple guidelines to create a balanced meal plan for their senior loved ones.
Steps to create a balanced meal plan include:
Consult a Dietitian: Working with a nutritionist can ensure the meal plan addresses any specific dietary needs or restrictions (e.g., low-sodium, diabetic-friendly).
Include Variety: A variety of fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, whole grains, and healthy fats should be included in every meal to ensure nutritional balance.
Make Meals Enjoyable: Ensure meals are flavorful and appealing, which can encourage seniors to eat more and enjoy their meals. Consider the texture, color, and presentation of meals.
Caregivers should also account for any difficulties seniors may have, such as chewing or swallowing issues, and adjust meals accordingly.
Conclusion
Balanced meals are essential for seniors in Wellesley, MA, to maintain good health, energy, and mental sharpness. By focusing on providing nutrient-rich foods, caregivers can support seniors’ physical, cognitive, and emotional well-being. Proper nutrition can improve quality of life and help seniors live
independently for longer. If you're interested in learning more about how to create a balanced meal plan for your loved ones, read more on our website for expert tips and resources.

Putting your best foot forward
March 6, 2020 Chris Watson
WNC Pressure Washing
Putting Your Best Foot Forward Takes On a Whole New Meaning When It
Comes to Your Health and the Health of Your Business.
You might not realize just how many steps you take or what you expose your feet to in a normal day of work, but your
feet have a lot to deal with. The concerns are real when it comes to foot health and safety at work and even your bottom line. I’ve learned there are also great ways to avoid ever having a serious problem to begin with.
Do you consider sore feet to be something that just comes with the territory?
If you’re like me, my focus tends to stay on those things that bring in the money at the end of the day – sales, scheduling, service and getting to the next job. Sure, my feet ached but I didn’t see that as a huge red flag. After all, it’s a physical job. A long day could easily be 13 hours. Whose feet wouldn’t hurt? The problem, I learned the hard way, is that when pain is overlooked, minor issues like ‘just sore’ feet can lead to more serious conditions. In my case, Plantar Fasciitis had developed. Briefly, Plantar Fasciitis is a repetitive strain and impact injury to the ligament of the sole of the foot. Think of it as if taking a violin bow and over-stretching it again and again. It would have to be replaced. Fortunately, my injury was caught before any severe damage and under the care of my physician and a talented movement therapist, I was able to make the changes that continue to keep my feet healthy today.
Feet are not just useful but also statistic-worthy.
According to The Bureau of Labor Statistics, in 2017, at least 60,000 foot injuries were responsible for keeping people from work annually and that 80% of foot injuries are caused by objects that weigh 30 pounds or less. OSHA reported in 2018 that trips and falls consistently remain one of the leading causes of workplace injuries and are contributed to by slippery surfaces, improper footwear, rushing employees and weather conditions.
So, whether an injury is over-use, avoidance of pain signals, poor footwear choices, accidents or environmental circumstances, none of it happens without some loss of valuable work time. For many, or most of us, as sole proprietor business owners that means cancelling jobs and perhaps significant financial loss.
Tips for avoiding “inevitable” foot pain and injuries or for healing faster if it happens. Through my own experience and subsequently developing much greater awareness of this issue, I’ve learned several
methods, which when combined, insure my feet and my employees’ feet stay healthy and fit. After all, if my feet aren’t working, then it doesn’t matter how fit I am otherwise, I won’t be working.
1. Warm-up stretches designed specifically for feet.
Most of us think we don’t have a spare 15 minutes – it’s up and out the door. But I’ve found that here and there, I can easily fit in foot-specific stretches during my normal activities. For instance, while I’m waiting for the water tank to fill up – that’s 10 to 15 minutes that I can use to do stretches. Massage Therapist, Lawrence Hines of Asheville Therapeutic Massage, also a Certified Movement Specialist, followed up his massage with the following exercises. They Work!
a. Achilles stretch A – use wall (or your truck) to place hands in front, put one foot back with a straight leg, bend front knee, lean into the wall to stretch the calf and tendon.
b. Achilles stretch B – use the wall (or your truck Tire), place heel close to the tire and toes on the tire, lean into to stretch the calf and tendon.
c. Towel toe grasp - Seated, with towel on the floor in front of you (not carpet):
a) Step on the towel and grasp it with your toes. Draw it straight to you using your foot motion only. b) Place the towel to the R side, step on it w your R foot. Grasp it again and draw toward your L foot. c) Place the towel to the L side, step on it w your R foot. Grasp and draw to your R side.
Ten repetitions for all three motions.d. Toe pull – seated, grasp your toes in one hand and pull them toward your knee to stretch the plantar surface of the foot. Short repetitive stretches for 10 reps. While stretching stroke the plantar surface with your other hand, thumb, knuckles. This increases the stretch and helps to break up fascial adhesions.
e. Toe raise, point, and curl – seated, a) foot and toes on floor, raise heels; b) point toes, raise heels; c) curl toes under, raise heels
f. Toe splay – seated, a) spread toes apart; b) use your fingers between toes to create spread, good while watching tv! g. Ball roll – seated, use a small ball like a golf ball (or tennis ball) under your foot for a rolling massage.
Always repeat both sides the same number of stretches and intensity.
2. Footwear.
Apply the same criteria to footwear choices as you would any other important piece of equipment. Imagine your most profitable piece of equipment breaking down for weeks or months. How would that impact your business? Now imagine injury to a foot or even both feet. You know, the same feet that allow you to show up and operate your equipment from point A to point B? Ouch.
Waterproof work boots with a firm sole and a good fit work really well for most situations on the ground. Supportive enough for long days and strong enough to protect from accidents like stubbed toes or dropped tools and equipment. Or even accidentally getting hit across the toes with your sprayer. And, just as important, your skin is protected from a chemical burn which, if it happens, could easily prevent returning to work until it’s well healed.
When I am required to climb a ladder and walk on the roof, I consistently switch to rubber boots. They give me the traction I need to avoid slipping and are tall enough to keep water out. Plus, for either type of boot, I wear waterproof overalls to make sure neither water nor chemicals can get close to or soak through to my skin.
3. Molded inserts or custom foot orthotics
One of the most effective and doctor recommended strategies for the prevention of injuries, I immediately noticed the difference in both shortening my healing process and preventing re-injury by using inserts. Custom orthotics may be more expensive but potentially more effective for your feet. Retail orthotics can be a combination of molded and cushioning but you may need to test a few to find the right fit or consult with a specialist.
4. Extra socks, dry shoes and boots
Again, think “equipment”. Having several pairs of extras on hand is an extremely effective way to protect feet from sweat, fungus, athlete’s foot or from getting waterlogged and possibly developing Trench foot, a type of tissue damage from prolonged exposure to wet conditions. It can lead to swelling, pain, skin, muscle and nerve damage. Change into a dry pair of socks and dry boots between jobs. Dry socks in wet boots are not much help!
Making ‘Best Practice’ a Habit
While all of this might sound like a lot of hassle, making these foot safety routines a habit is really just best practice for
the good of our industry, your health and to protect your business from unnecessary, and unwanted, stress. Let your customers know you understand the value of best practices and safety. They will know they have hired a true professional who takes the time to get it done right.
Foot health and safety tips
To keep feet strong and healthy:
• Complete a thorough warmup routine before exercising.
• Wear supportive footwear for day-to-day activities and sports.
• Replace shoes when they are worn down.
• Build up strength and flexibility slowly, to condition feet and ankles.
• Avoid uneven surfaces, especially when running. Try not to run uphill too often.
• Listen to the body and do not overdo activities.
• Prevent any recurrence of injury by resting and receiving appropriate treatment.Keeping the feet and ankles healthy is always a good idea. The exercises above can help to ease existing pain, prevent discomfort, and reduce chances of injury.

Let's back up even further, let's determine if you really want to do your deck maintenance yourself or if you want to hire a professional to do the work for you. A cost benefit analysis should be performed in order to determine if the benefits of using a professional outweigh the costs. The average deck will take 3-6 hours for a home owner to power wash a deck (that is assuming they own a power washer). If a rental is needed, there is the additional time with driving to the store, purchasing the rental and then also returning it.
After the cleaning is completed, the deck needs to dry. This will mean week nights or waiting until the next weekend. When the deck/wood has dried, the decision making needs to take place for which stain product to use.
Unfortunately the help you will get at a store with your questions are limited. How many decks do you think the employee behind the counter has completed? So when they answer your questions, how much experience is behind those answers. At a minimum call a couple deck contractors and get their opinion. If you are up front and honest, a true professional would be happy to provide their opinion on what you should do if you are tackling your own deck staining.

Roof Cleaning Pros
What Are The Black Streaks On My Roof?
Unsightly black stains or streaks on asphalt shingles are caused by a hardy type of algae called Gloeocapsa Magma. The algae feeds on the crushed limestone that is used in asphalt shingles. Rain spreads the algae down the roof causing the black streaks. These streaks are not only unsightly but cause the shingles to fail prematurely by not allowing the shingles to reflect heat properly.
50% Of Roofs Are Replaced Due To The Way They Look.
This is not because of their functionality. Half of the roofs ever replaced in the Midwest didn't need replaced, only cleaned. Just as mold and mildew can grow on your vinyl siding, wind blown algae can land and grow on your roof. Replacing your roof because of this algae is like replacing your siding instead of having it cleaned; it just doesn't make sense. Some roofing contractors don't know what these black streaks are, saying it's the asphalt showing through the shingles or that it's water stains. Some contractors may know it's algae but tell you it can't be cleaned without damaging the shingles. In either case, they may tell you that the roof needs replaced. This is not true if your shingles are still in good shape. The algae can be killed and removed properly without damaging the shingles using a low pressure chemical application (recommended by shingle manufacturers).Never use a pressure washer on an asphalt shingle roof, doing so will blow granules off the shingles and lessen the longevity of your roof.
Roof Cleaning Is Recommended By Shingle Manufacturers.
Companies like Owens Corning and GAF, and also the Asphalt Roofing Manufacturers Association recommend a low pressure chemical application using certain cleaners to restore shingles suffering from roof algae, followed by a low pressure rinse. We use the cleaners and methods recommended by these companies, for a safe and damage free roof cleaning. If your shingles are still in good shape but have roof algae on them, having your roof cleansed will allow you to get the full life out of your shingles, saving you thousands of dollars.
Signs Of Aged Shingles Needing Replaced.
We do not recommend cleaning shingles that are in need of being replaced. If you're not sure if your roof needs replaced or cleaned, here are some signs of an aged roof
1) brittle or crumbling shingles
2) excessive amount of shingle granules in your gutters
3) bottom corners of shingles curled up
4) wavy, warped, or heaved shingles
5) very thin or loose shingles
If you are still unsure about the status of your roof, we will be glad to evaluate it for you. We will not clean shingles that need replaced, because cleaning the roof won't solve the problem if the shingles are aged. On the other hand, if you call a roofing contractor, you may not get the whole truth and may be persuaded into replacing a roof that only needs cleaned.

It’s no secret that harsh winter weather can take a serious toll on your home. High speed winds can tear away loose roofing shingles and even siding. Heavy rain can find its way beneath your roof and into your home. Hail can cause surface damage to your roof. Snow buildup on your roof can cause structural damage to your roof. That’s just a few of the things that can go wrong. While nothing can guarantee that you won’t experience these problems this winter, there is a lot you can do to limit the possibility. When winterizing your home, the best place to start is at the top with your roof. Here are some tips for getting your roof ready for the harsh weather to come.
Trim your trees
Sometimes, it isn’t the rain, hail, snow, or wind that damages your home directly. Overhanging branches can fall onto your roof causing severe damage. Even tiny twigs that hang over your roof can cause problems for you if the wind blows them back and forth across your roof. They can remove the granules from your roof. Branches and leaves can also clog your gutters and cause water to pool up on your roof leading to roof leaks. The chance of this can be minimized if you trim the trees near your home.
Check for and repair roof damage
Any damage to your roof or rain gutters is a vulnerable area that can lead to more serious problems. Before winter is in full swing, it’s a good idea to get out and inspect your roof looking for any damage. If you have cracked or curling shingles, clogged gutters, or rain gutters that are pulling away from your roof, take care of these problems immediately. They’ll only get worse if they are ignored.
Add insulation
Make sure the insulation in your attic is sufficient. You may need to add more if it is not. You may be wondering what insulation has to do with roofing problems. Insulation does more than keep your heating costs down. It also prevents ice from damming up your rain gutters causing roof damage and possibly leaks
Consider impact resistant roofing
If you live in an area that’s prone to hail and it’s time for a new roof, consider a roofing material that is especially resistant to hail damage. This can save you from frequently having to make costly repairs.

We're Now Renovating Homes In Fulshear, TX
After nearly 10 years of offering just pressure washing and roof cleaning in the Katy and Fulshear area I have decided to take customer service to a new level and start a construction company in Fulshear. I seem to get asked on a nearly daily basis if I also offer painting, or if I know a good roofing company and up until now I have always just said I didn't do those things - I just stick to what I know best.
I realized that what I really know best is customer service, and helping customers take back the pride in home ownership. I also understand that you don't have to know everything, but it's good to know someone that does. I can actually help my customers more by finding the best custom pool builder, custom cabinet makers and outdoor kitchen construction company in the area and creating the home the customer has always wanted - but never knew how to get.
I am very excited to start my new endeavor and I have several great friends that have a decade or more of experience in construction but aren't as knowledgeable about marketing and I think together we can really successful and help a lot of great people create the house of their dreams.

24 YEAR PROFESSIONAL EXPERT'S ROOF TECHNICAL BULLETIN.
Written by Chuck Bergman on 08/27/13
SHINGLED ROOFING:
I have cleaned roofs in Charlotte County Florida since 1989. I started out pressure washing them, but I could see, with shingled roofs, severe granule loss taking place on the shingles and turning the pressure down didn’t solve the problem. Why? First off, it takes a certain amount of pressure to remove the black algae – period!
So, if it requires say 1000 psi of pressure, which will work to blast the black coloration from shingles, then it’s just semantics.
If at 1000 psi I can clean a roof holding my gun tip say 1 foot away, then, if I turn the pressure down to 1/2 that, I have to move in to 6″ away, bringing the pressure right back to 1000 psi. Another words nothing is accomplished!
TILE ROOFING:
With tile, most are manufactured with at least a light glazing on top of a slurry coating {paint}
Pressure washing tile, requires a higher blasting pressure, starting at 1500psi up to 3000psi.
This can remove or dull that glazing. If the roof has been pressure cleaned in the past and that glazing is mostly gone already, then the slurry coating, creating your roofs coloring begins to be removed. This will turn a red tile roof into a pinkish roof. It will turn other colors pale as well. Eventually, it will reach the plain cement the tile is made of, showing bare cement areas.
Some companies have found an easier pressure cleaning tool, called a “Surface Cleaning Machine” and to cover the fact that these machines use pressure to the extreme, they give their cleaning method nice names like shampooing your roof. These machines were originally designed to clean flat surfaces { I own 2 } and are great on driveways, sidewalks and cement parking lots, where almost no damage can occur. They are the worst thing you can do to a tile roof though. The powerful jets are angled to cut sideways, also, they are set at an exact amount of inches above whatever surface they are set on. With flat cement that perfect! Tile is not a flat surface, so the high parts get blasted badly, while the lower portions of the tile, barely come clean-if at all. If you went up and inspected such a cleaning job, you would find many small black lines of leftover algae. If any algae is left, it will continue growing and return with a vengeance within 1-2 years! A chemically cleaned, soft-washed tile roof is easily evenly coated and all algae is killed and disintegrated. That’s why a Non-Pressure Roof cleaning, as explained below, lasts just about twice as long as any type of pressure washing / shampoo style cleaning will.
Fortunately, you are not stuck, having to accept roof damage in order to have a nice, clean, healthy roof!
Many years ago, some of the roofing manufacturers, came up with a formula to “chemically clean” roofs, using no pressure at all. It’s called by a few names “Non-Pressure” “No-Pressure” Soft-Washing” and “Chemical Cleaning”
I started using this method and chemicals specified by the roofing manufacturers and their Manufacturers Association {ARMA} back in the 1990′s and found that it cleaned tile just as well as it cleaned shingles!
It calls for a mixture of about a 3-5% total solution of Chlorine Bleach and a little TSP {Tri Sodium Phosphate}
I then add a commercial soap / surfactant to that mix, to thicken the mixture, so it won't run off the roof.
Nowadays, there’s always someone trying to sell you something. Non Bleach alternative chemicals are on the market and I try them as they come out. They all use the “Eco-Friendly” “Green” approach, to sell their chemicals with. The products I have tried do not tell you what chemicals are in the product. So, are they safe and eco-friendly? Who knows? We do know bleach though! We wash our clothes in it, disinfect our kitchen food preparation areas with it, swim in it in our pools and drink it in our city water! When it dries, it turns back into salt, which is what it is made from.
You can go to my website and click on “MANUFACTURER SPECIFICS” and read directly from the makers of your roofing, that what I am saying is what the makers of your roofing also say. Or just go there directly, using this click-able link: http://www.bergmanpressurewashing.co...Specifics.html
Incidentally, the ARMA also says not to allow anyone to spray on ANY after coating “Field Coating” on your roof.
It says that those coatings can cause damage and at the very least, none have proven to accomplish anything.
They are sold as a supposed way to not have to ever clean your roof again. They only claim that the products will keep your roof clean for 2 years. 99% of all roofs cleaned properly, will stay clean longer than that, without buying into their programs. Read the ARMA statements here:
http://www.asphaltroofing.org/sites/...tin/tb_227.pdf
So, after 24 years of roof cleaning: First with a Pressure Washing machine and then without the use of any pressure, this is what I have learned to be facts.
