  1. Dang Chaz..sorry to hear that...You could really have been hurt bad on stairs!!

For me slipping on dwelling wood stripper is a bit different than slipping on interior vinyl strip jobs. In comparison it seems the difference is that with the exterior wood jobs only parts are slippery which makes it worse..ya never know what yer gonna get..lol

Janitorial supply houses sell slip ons that put scrub pads underneith your shoes. These break into the emulsifying layer and strip where you walk. In floors I always just lay the stripper backwards and never walk on it again until my scrubber goes over the area 10 to 15 minute later..problem solved, in wood we don't have that luxury as we need to keep it wet in a very evaporative natured environment with sun beating down or breezes speeding up the dry on us. I did experiment with a mix I call 'modified apple sauce' in the apple sauce roof cleaning thread that did a real number on lessoning slippage on the interior jobs but haven't gotten around to working it out yet for wood. My belief though is that the faster the surface being stripped gets emulsified through and through without need for mechanical break down the better. Hydroxides alone don't always achomplish that task on their own with the thick coatings. Maybe we as a group should try to figure this out and try to minimize slippage. Could be the tsp addition in the 'modified' mix that could help..unsure...

  2. Can be smart on gas stations and truck stops to go with a complete self contained unit that is used with short hose and pulled around. Many places are opened to traffic and using such a unit allows you to cone off only a stall or two to keep them open and your pressure hoses from getting run over. Since they wheel on out of your trailer they are somewhat more conducive to small trailers especially when you need trailer for other chores..A 6 or an 8gpm would be wise as Alan says..as large flat areas with lots of grime and debri require lots of flushing. Pressure washing such areas efficiently is more about the amount of flow/overall cleaning units and heat than pressure specs alone.

Strip centers your gonna want a regular skid unit with at least a 250 gal supply tank.

  3. Can we assume it is same aluminum roof job as here?: http://www.thegrimescene.com/forums/up-roof-asphalt-tile-shake-cleaning/11127-help-aluminum-roof-steep.html

Just think you need to kill it good and dead from the ground and go back a week or two later and 0 tip it... Your fears were chem on aluminum though...What strength can he go up to to spot kill it with a chemical pump? Maybe rinse underneith a few times while the spot areas are dieing and drying?

But to answer this topic..No I don't raise price less some uncertainty was discussed or made room for.

  4. Here's a consideration for you...we're in Summer, first spring after they do much of nothing in way of maintenance, second spring they step up and use hose often.. They sorta resign to the idea of scrapping the idea of paying you for maintenance cause it still looks pretty good, but after the big BBQ and spending their disposable income it needs help..so off they go to the store and pour on who knows what chem to clean it up a tad. Man of the house says "Ooops.. looks a little faded mother"..mother says "well we still got a year warranty left, dig out that guys phone number and get him over here"..

just a thought.. you may want some cussion time in more ways than one..

  5. #3 is a surfactant/detergent - the main ingredient in many liquid house washes and store bought strippers and degreasers.

The amount of synonyms would support that. Is there any specific retail products you see it listed on..or what synonyms is more common use?.

The Wiki says "Polyoxyethylene is the chemical name for a straight chained alcohol." and I assume the term is used for many chemicals in that condition. Think we need to see exact synonym with the 'nonylphenol' part.

  6. Ok so correct me if mistaken...

We have 6 glycols talked about at this point with various pros and cons as possable boosters.

    1.Propylene glycol

(1,2-Propanediol; 1,2-Dihydroxypropane; Methylethylene glycol; Trimethyl glycol; 1,2-Propylene glycol; monopropylene glycol; propane-1,2-diol; alpha-propyleneglycol; dowfrost; PG 12; sirlene; solar winter ban; Propanediol - CAS [57-55-6] C3H8O2

    Propylene Glycol )

..Safe antifreeze, Supposed to be less toxic than standard Ethylene Glycol antifreeze. Flashpoint 210 degree F.. more info here: PROPYLENE GLYCOL - (Partially Validated Method #2051)

    2. 2-phenoxyethanol

    (Ethylene glycol phenyl ether, Phenoxytolarosol,Dowanol EP / EPH,Emery 6705,Rose ether,1-Hydroxy-2-phenoxyethane, β-hydroxyethyl phenyl ether, Phenyl cellosolve-C.A.S. #[122-99-6]C8H10O2 Phenoxyethanol - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia )

...Supposed to be less toxic and increases range of sealant coating removal. Flash point- 250 deg. F

    3. Polyoxyethylene Nonylphenol-

    Tergitol NP-33

(Polyethylene Mono(nonylphenyl)ether Glycols; Polyoxyethylene (9) Nonylphenyl Ether; nonyl phenol ethoxylate; nonylphenyl polyethyleneglycol ether, nonionic; polyethylene glycol 450 nonyl phenyl ether, nonionic surfactant; Tergitol NP-9; polyethylene glycol 450 nonyl phenyl ether; Ethoxylated nonylphenol; alpha(nonylphenyl)-omega-hydroxypoly(oxy-1,2-ethanediyl); polyethylene glycols mono(nonylphenyl)ether; macrogol nonylphenyl ether; nonoxinol; polyoxyethylene(n)-nonylphenyl ether; nonylphenoxypolyethoxyethanol; nonylphenyl polyethylene glycol ether; nonoxynol; Makon; ; T-DET-N; surfionic n; sterox; arkopal N-090; carsonon N-9; igepal co-630; neutronyx 600; PEG-9 nonyl phenyl ether; protachem 630; rewpol hv-9; polyoxyethylene nonyl phenol; Glycols, polyethylene, mono(nonylphenyl) ether; Nonylphenol polyethylene glycol ether; Nonylphenol, polyoxyethylene ether; Nonylphenoxypoly(ethyleneoxy)ethanol; POE nonylphenol; Polyoxyethylene nonylphenol; POE (10) nonylphenol; CAS[9016-45-9] )

    Polyoxyethylene Nonylphenol

.....Thinking this could be the fairly toxic version banned in European Union due to environmental concerns, they are replaced by more expensive but safer alcohol ethoxylates..
    4. Ethylene glycol

    (Monoethylene glycol, MEG, 1,2-ethanediol C2H4(OH)2),CAS# 107-21-1

Ethylene glycol - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

..used as antifreeze, used to make glycol ethers, used to make stains, is a combustable alcohol-non flamable(232 degree F)..is pretty toxic..

    5. 2-Butoxyethanol

(butyl cellosolve, butyl glycol, ethylene glycol monobutyl ether, Dowanol, Bane-Clene, Eastman EB solvent CAS [111-76-2] c6h14o2)

2-Butoxyethanol - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

..The butyl base of many retail and industrial cleaners and strippers "The main use of 2-butoxyethanol is as a solvent in paints and surface coatings, followed by cleaning products and inks.", unsure of how much extended range for surface coating removal compared to the phenoxy -cas#122-99-6 mentioned by Rod.

More info is found here: 2-BUTOXYETHANOL (BUTYL CELLOSOLVE) 2-BUTOXYETHYL ACETATE (BUTYL CELLOSOLVE ACETATE)

..Don't think ya want to use this..flamable 110 degree F

  7. Different strokes fer different folks I guess..her's seems to be staring off the stoop with nothing better to do then the probable flicking of her cig butts into the folgers can. What can one expect from a youngster with no depreciable/appreciable assets to consider though....Oh well gotta luv em

  8. Chaz, Think Les made clear later on in that thread how it is not a situation of never doing butyl into oxidizer but that danger can happen if done in carefree attitude with no understanding of what your doing. Reactions happen which make heat. His first post does say

"Butyl Acetate (Ethylene glycol, Glycol ether EB).....----etc.----.....except with acetate which could combust."

So from what he says it is not the butyl aspect but the acetate aspect to watch for...

Look what Russell says way back about his booster which is butyl:

"The only listing that you will find on the MSDS for the booster is Ethylene glycol mono butyl ether or C6H14O2

The booster was designed to be a formulary enhancer increasing the reactivity of HD-80 allowing it to emulsify paint and varnishes. It is used with HD-80 at up to 10% or 1/2 gallon per 5 gallons. This should allow you to remove any finish that you find on exterior wood decks, fences or homes. If you are trying to remove bottom paint from a boat call for specific directions.

    Best of Luck

    Russell Cissell" http://www.thegrimescene.com/forums/look-whats-new/2045-new-hd-80-booster-now-stock.html

..note the c6h14o2 here : Butyl Cellosolve (same chemstore link)

...is chem in much of our over the counter cleaners like Castrol's purple power, formula 409, etc, and is why they are called butyl based:

    2-Butoxyethanol - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia ,

for differences between butoxy and acetate look here: 2-BUTOXYETHANOL (BUTYL CELLOSOLVE) 2-BUTOXYETHYL ACETATE (BUTYL CELLOSOLVE ACETATE)

..but hey most that stuff has filler and will foam to high heaven if you put a half gal. in a fiver. Probably lots of carbonate and who knows what else in them.

I work for some Shell chem distributors so maybe they got me the 2-ethoxy.

Should just make my own floor stripper with it as well at this point.

  10. Ron, thanx but the link to your search comes up notta..and where do you mean at bottom of board?..You refering to the 'chemical discussion-contractor only' drop down menu? I want info handy without wading through heaps of stuff and I would also like some your best recipe listings for house washes and the like. I compile for my own use and someday I may stick them up on one of these boards...

  11. Ken, Think he may experience a tad heartache where the sunny areas run in under the roof or just cause it is a lot of wood?....

My preference would in no way include the chance of having to defelt that thing so I would stick with mild stuff or well diluted stronger stuff.

But hey this one really looks fun to me. I want to drive over and help..

I would use a real short angled wash wand and then double stain coat with hand hvlp.. All that inside wood work looks like a PITA otherwise to me with lots of leakage and strained muscles... :)
