Welcome back. How long do you anticipate it will take for those new roofs to need your service again?

I have a Class A with all endorsements (excluding passenger). The license is not too difficult to get, provided you get plenty of practice. Fees vary state to state I assume. There are new requirements to get or renew the Hazmat end. FBI Background checks, etc.

I received a strange phone call for a quote yesterday. A female voice started by asking the standard questions of what I clean, etc. She then started asking me how much I charge to clean driveways, houses, decks, etc. I advised her I would need to see the property to give an exact estimate. Frustrated, she then started asking more detailed questions such as my location, what chems I used to clean with, the psi of my machine....and finally GPM(!)... After that question, I made the comment, "You sound very familiar with pressure washers." CLICK.....DIALTONE Was this likely a competitor digging for info? Or just a crazy customer?

Well, if she actually gives you her address, that reduces the chances she might be connected to a competitor "fishing" for info.... But you never can tell....

Maybe this is a question that has been covered before. I haven't seen the thread though.. How did your discover this business...whatever it is that you do (housewashing, roofs, flatwork, wood, etc.)? What pushed you over the edge into deciding to go into this rather than some other venture? Myself, I had a college buddy who did this part time (PWing apartment complexes). He would often call me to help out on some larger projects. I found the work to be kinda fun and relaxing, compared to my other job (working in an attorney's office). I didn't start this business until several years after I moved from that town, however. Until I started researching more in depth, I never considered I could support myself by doing this full time. But here I am now...fulltime, and glad I took the leap.

I almost lost it today with this guy asking for money. The Home Depot I go to sometimes is in a sketchy part of town, and it seems like about 2 out of 3 times I go there I am stopped by some guy asking for "a few dollars for gas" or something similar. I hate giving these guys money, because it most likely ends up being spent at the liquor store down the road. What do I say to get rid of these people quickly?. How do you deal with these situations?

Thank You. I checked out their site. Not much specific info, without a user id and password. But the delivery service looks promising. I will definitely give them a call tomorrow also.

It is surprising. With all the chemical plants we have here in South Louisiana one would think we would have a better selection. I have 2 big roof jobs to do over the next 2 days, so I am glad I found them today.

Thanks to both of you. I was able to contact Univar, and they have the SHC at a reasonable price. It is a little farther than I would like to travel, but it will work for now. I am also going to call tomorrow to see if they carry TSP and Borax(sodium borate).
