  1. Medic, you are a fine person! I'm sure things will work out well, and certainly hate nice people getting all stressed out.

Construction type stuff, and cleaning, is all pretty straight forward... if it doesn't look right, that's the best indication they are NOT !

When you pay good money, as you did, you should get a quality job.

From the pics, the project was well on the way, but the fellow didn't finish the stripping before starting to apply finish products.

Fortunately the log is a structure that will respond well to all this.

  2. Plainpainter Dan,

    I earn a living fixing s*it workmanship.

If work is bad, I will say so, and offer a solution.

The person working on that log either did not know what he was doing, or was trying to put one over on the owner, take the money and run.

Good thing he had enough sense to check in here.

My obligation is to the person who engages my services.

If the bloke who was having a difficult time getting that log to look proper would have contacted me, I would have helped, for a price, or subbed the job from him.

There is no brotherhood among contractors unless you're sworn to some trade organization.

Furthermore, obligation amongst workers is called a trade union.

Anyone can walk on my jobs anywhere, anytime, and I will take responsibility for the quality of workmanship. Occasionally, when confronted over a project, it was necessary for me to ask a concerned third party, "Now, are you going to ask what the budget was for that project?"

Let me remind you this BB and others are full of horror stories related by one of our own 'good guys' who followed some hack and repaired a job poorly done for an end client, at a price.

I enjoy what I do, learn as much as I can to accomplish more, and help others in need. But make no mistake, I do it for the money.

  3. No Kevin, the water quality enforcement guy did NOT actually show me the lawbook, but the appropriate sections of the violation were in the filing.

I went to talk to him, face to face, before things got any crazier, to let him know we really meant to be good guys.

He was a straight up guy... heck, we ALL want clean air and water!

Yes, I understand about dredging. My claims were on a really dirty stream, so it made no difference. but I still had to get the permit.

And the permit is your evidence of exemption.

Otherwise, you could just DO IT.

If u gotta ask permission, it ain't free!

  4. if it was my construction company, I wouldnt pour the drives or the walks till last.

    that doesnt help you

We painted on a small 60 unit tract where they did that.

    It was winter.

Workers had as many boards and scrap laid out through the mud as they could get, but rough construction was done. It was a quagmire.

The homes were full of mud and 2 - 3ft up the walls. a real nightmare.

...and I've seen em where they just jackhammer the slabs out and re-pour em ! It's a crazy business when nobody cares...

    How's your heatspell in Phoenix?

I recall working in 110 -117 just a few years ago, and the 105 - 106 we've had for a few days has got everyone melting.

Plenty of fire smoke now... It's actually worse than LA, and the actual fire is over 100 miles s of us...

Topic? Have you tried phosphoric acid solution on those red stains?

  5. hundreds of fish died? Sounds like someone is exaggerating a teeny tiny little bit. If I was the attorney for the guys that dumped the acid into the water, I would ask who counted the fish and for photos of the hundreds of dead fish. I would also find out how much acid, if it was acid, was used and contact a fish expert as to the effect of the acid. Then I woild work to reduce the fine. However, the guy is going to pay a fine, and may have an exclusion on his insuance policy.

Any bets how much discussion this post generates?

I'll bet this post generates quite a bit.

Spoke w a long established PW contractor this morn who WILL NOT work in the next town, our county seat, just for the liability of all the enforcement agencies there.

... BTW, IF you were an attorney, here, you would know NOT to ask abt the number of fish. Every one is sacred...

The law was quoted to me, by a local enforcement person... " It is unlawful to increase the turbidity of a stream." He explained for me...

It would be a violation to allow even milk, to pass over the curb and get into the gutter, where it would eventually get into a stream.

Enforcement here in CA is famous/infamous... an $80k Steiger tractor was once impounded as evidence, when a farmer dug up a rat nest. It also stopped the farming on a couple hundred acres.

But that's been abt 15yrs ago... it's worse now!
