When selling quality doesn't work
Firedkm replied to staudend's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
I just love that color on decks! Nice job Nick -
When I use Ready Seal I include 2 coats in the bid. Since Ready Seal is soooooo easy to use the price is the same as if I was using a onecoat product.

One Year Old

Beths EFC-38 will do the job for you. Also make sure the customer really wants two-tone deck. Once there is a solid down its pretty much there. It can be removed but it a pita to do that. When pricing out a two-tone deck make sure you price alot higher than you would a regular deck. There is alot extra work into doing two-tones. They do however look really awesome when they are done. -
John, That will work for you but it will take longer than using just straight oxalic acid. The citralic is a slower working brightner so the dwell time will need to be longer. Good luck

Reed, Any idea why? I had a 1 year old cedar deck that I did this spring that I thought would take 5 gallons of rs. It only would take about 3 (small deck). Its allready fading on the color but its still repelling water. The deck looked awesome after it was done and the customer was happy. Now he is concerned because the look is still not there. BTW- I applied 2 coats. On the second coat it would not take that much. Like it was full and saying no thank-you on more sealer.:)

Well yesterday I decided to overseed my grass. I found a ground hornets nest the hard way! I got stung on my leg at least five times that I was able to count on my one leg. I got pissed off and got my ammo for my attack. Dumped about a gallon of gas down the hole and one match! poof there gone. It must have burned for twenty minutes, as people drove by my house they had a very curious look on there face. Like whats the heck is he doing as the flames are about ten feet high burning my front yard!!!!:whoops: That will teach them to come after me again!! My one question is, where was Everett when I needed him!:dunno:

My only worries are the amps that is needed to run this bad boy. I looked through the link and could not find anything about the how much amps it pulls. Looks like it would work for what you want it for and it sure is alot less noise than using your generator. -
When selling quality doesn't work

Nick, It does get frustrating when you loose a bid to someone who is cheaper. One rule I always follow is when I set a price I will not budge. I take pride in my deck skills and the customer will have to pay for what I know. I have had several people that I have done quotes on and during the process I was told they were going to sell the house. All of those quotes I did not get. They wanted a quick fix and I will not do that. My price would have been a little higher than that but your still in the ball park. -
Who is Rick? I thought it was Henry? or was it Rick? I am confused!!!!

Mike, If you have an extension wand, you may want to use that. Some homes I have had to pull it out and do the whole house like this. As far as the gutters. How bad are they? You may have to brush them instead of applying it with the x-jet( if thats what you do). Brushing the gutters will give you better control of where gutter shock is. It just takes alot of time to do. I would leave the house wash mix just as you have it. I never have toned it down to do any of my washes. If the paint is going to come off it will. Changing the house wash mix I think will not do anything for you in this matter.

Mike, Here in NJ we have a lot of aluminum sided homes. If I turned down every single one I would go broke. Yes most can be done and can be done so it looks good. If the house is really oxidized I rinse with a 4010 or sometimes an 8010 tip. As long as you take your time you should be fine. I would do a test area first to make sure it can be done without going to bare metal. I do apply my house wash (citracleen) with the x-jet. You still have to be careful with this. If you hit the side with the straight stream too hard you will leaves marks. When you do rinse keep your distance the same through out the whole process so the area will look even. Good luck

Sure, why not?:deal: I have too been looking for some "good stuff" searching the web. Your right about stuff costing alot and My worry is the trail and error. I dont have the awnings to practice on like I did for decks and house washes. At least you got a annual cleaning out of the guy. Those awnings did look really good.

Tony, What are you using to get them that clean? The picture of the clean one looks awesome.

If you wet the area down before you apply your chems, then during the dwell time wet it down again and after you rinse wet the area down again you should be fine. I have never killed a plant or flower from chems yet. Just killed them with the hose and stepping on them. opps! I dont like covering the plants with anything unless I am spraying sealer on a deck. The heat and moisture will kill the plants before your chems will. If you do decide to cover the plants, dont let it sit to long covered up. Yes you can use EFC-38 instead of bleach. Follow the direction on the tub for proper ratio. The dwell time will be longer than using bleach. Good luck

Does it really matter how people rinsed in the old days? Not really. As time goes by there are better and more improved ways of doing things. Its called progress to make our job easier and safer so we can go home at the end of the day. If you want to keep rinsing while being on a ladder, then go for it.:irritated I was just stating an observation of your post and would hate to hear that you got hurt doing something that could have been prevented.
