Love the Natural Cedar in contrast with the solid -
I talked to customer today about staining a fence about 160 linear feet long, the fence currently has a solid stain on so i recommended cabot solid. No big deal but he wants the bottom 3-4" of the 4x4's which are placed every 8'feet to have a flashing on to decrease the weed whipping marks. Has anyone ever done this or have recommendations on this, thanks, John Peterson, Peterson Deck Restoration

Stripping Sikkens Cetol 1-23
PetersonDecks replied to mike c's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
Rent a Monster Drum sander with 36 Grit, go to town, so difficult to strip off, we sanded down 500 square feet of Sikkens SRD today and came out beautiful with the the Clarke drum sander -

So many stain choices, help a newbie out?
PetersonDecks replied to taintedtattoo's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
i know what you are talking about X-100, too many problems and the cedar tone is too orangy of a look. i can speak on Readyseal and TWP, i have used AC a little but not much and have not used Bakers. The ease of application is still critical, You are use to 2 products that make the application very easy to apply, Most Products show streaks and imperfections in the application. anyways, TWP has been showing fantastic results for me in regards to longevity. i am getting 2-3 years on floors and 4 years on vertical surfaces, Readyseal, i love the look and overall appearance, extremely easy to recoat if you already have Readyseal on. There should be a distributor in Wisconsin for TWP, you will have to order Readyseal online. Anyways, sounds like you have done your research, you have picked 5 of the best stains on the market to choose from. Good Luck -

Boot hockey, chasing kids, surviving the -20 degree temp today in Minnesota, snowmobiling, we have had snow 50 of the past 66 days in Minnesota, need it to be gone by April 1st to start the business. -
Any Experience with Bond's "One TIME" (100% solids & 7 yr. warranty) ???
PetersonDecks replied to celtwheel's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
i wonder if it is similar to Sealmax, i have looked at a couple of those decks after a year and it looks awful, and unable to strip. -
What's your "preferred" application method for Ready Seal?
PetersonDecks replied to Hose Jockey's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
most of the time we use a brush called a "ruff rider", larger jobs (over 120 linear feet) and over 500 square feet of a floor we use an airless sprayer. -
sreaks on paint from ox

We have had the problem with maintenance free siding, certain siding has a "chaulky look" (about 10% of the Maint. free siding), we get a little stain on it, wipe with simple green or any chemical, and leaves a streak. the only way to get it off is to come back with some kind of pressure washing cleaner, apply the cleaner, then pressure wash the cleaner off, the only way to decrease problem is wipe off with a dry rag when a little stain gets on house -
SIKKENS vs TWP
PetersonDecks replied to rwhat's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
i am guessing the Sikkens product that we are referencing is SRD? and i also assume it is the 100 series. -
What's YOUR most popular Ready Seal color being requested??
PetersonDecks replied to Hose Jockey's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
We use Natural Cedar on 90% of the wood in Minneapolis, we stock up on this every year and only use the browns and reds if the customer is very adament (sp?) about their choice. i always have 15-20 gallons in stock of Natural Cedar and must order the browns and reds specific to customers. -
Cabot over Behr
PetersonDecks replied to PetersonDecks's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
deck is 7-8 feet off the ground, no obstructions of airflow under deck, cabot solid will be acrylic, deck appears to be 5-6 years old, appears to be in very good condition, HO did previous stain therefore i am assuming no washing with bleach and prepping was minimal. thanks -
Cabot over Behr
PetersonDecks posted a question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
Quoted out a job the other day with a solid acrylic Behr stain on, Stain appeared to hold on deck floor and spindles. i talked to customer and he said most of Behr solid will peel off floor after every Minnesota weather. Whenever i have seen a solid deck we usually wash, little sanding and apply a solid Cabot on top which turns out nice. Hate doing solids but feel like it is better than attempting to strip an acrylic solid. anyways, do i attempt to strip behr solid or can i apply solid Cabot over existing stain. Thanks for your time, -
Dilemma: Acrylic over existing acrylic
PetersonDecks replied to The_Deck_Hand's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
We have a couple decks like this every year, awful crappy semi-transparent (such as Behr or something) and we will use a solid Cabot decking stain, we sand a ton and apply the solid over the Non-stripping semi-transparent. Looks prettty good at the end, always reluctant to do these because i know this will not be a repeat customer and i hate applying solids. -
SIKKENS vs TWP
PetersonDecks replied to rwhat's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
We have used TWP and Sikkens a little this year, TWP is so much easier to work with and easy to restain in a couple years, Sikkens can come out very patchy and show many imperfections in the wood compared to TWP. I will never touch Sikkens again, many HO's around here still think it is the best stain and drives my crazy. I had to resand a deck last week that was stained with Sikkens SRD cedar because came out patchy and crappy and ended up restaining with Readyseal, I heart readyseal!!!!
