I know what you mean Ken,i had a friend the other day tell me they let soemone paint their cedar house! There is nothing I hate more than hearing the "P" word used on cedar! Whatever you do don't rip off or paint your cedar siding it can be saved.

What solutions did you try cleaning the siding with? If you have pictures it would help.

2006 Sealer Poll: Which are you using this year?
seymore replied to Beth n Rod's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
I have about 600 gallons of Gray Away on hand cause i have soo much wood to stain! Now if it would just stop raining i could spray it! We also sell it retail here in Houston and we have many repeat customers applying it themselves. It's been the only stain we have used since 1990 and it has built a pretty nice reliable reputation for our company. -

Woohoo! Love the way this sprays!
seymore replied to Beth n Rod's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
I totally agree Ken that spraying is faster and just as good if not better than brushing/rolling.I find spraying is much better to get in between the cracks more evenly than rolling.I'm picky when it comes to my cracks! Now when i spray i mostly always back pad especially decks but not always on fences. I just can't see myself brushing/rolling a 2000+sqft.deck that most of my jobs average! -
HAHAHa that's too funny

Good example of Copper Azole PT Lumber
seymore replied to Beth n Rod's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
I hate that stuff!! I have a 12' tall 2000 sqft arbor to stain in the next few weeks that has that beautiful green looking wood on it.I've been letting the arbor weather the last 3 months to see if that greenish look goes away. I've use oxalic and bleach on some greenish decks that kinda helped but it still shows thru the stain!Arghhh I changed the pic to a better one. -
That's gonna be a nice castle Mr.Jeff!

masking a house
seymore replied to jnoden's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
I use when i can 1-2 inch squares of cardboard and staple on top of the the plastic to the shingles or the deck.I trust staples a whole lot more than i do tape and plastic.I'm not shy to use plastic as i have used a whole roll of 12'x200' 1.5 mil plastic on 1 job.I'll charge xtra of course for those kinds of jobs.Oh yeah use water too under the plastic so the oil won't stick when it's wet. -

Wood fence experiment
seymore replied to daryl's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
It looks good to me Daryl  What is the main ingredient in that cleaner? The only thing i can see is that you could spray some Ox or citric acid to get rid of the rust stains from the nails. Now as for the fuzzies there are times when you just can't help but to get them after cleaning. The wood being so grey"UV damage" and the age of the wood etc.so it's not much you can do to keep it from happening. When you stain the fence they are not as noticeable with a darker stain. It's supposed to be "rough" cedar so the fuzzies will give the stain something to stick to :) -

Doug, I recieved the pics and e-mailed the pics back to you after i resized them in Photoshop. You need to use a photo editor program to resize your pics to change the size from 2048x1536 "the original size" to 640x480. You will have to upload them here on the thread cause i'm maxed out on my allocated pics i can post. -

Here's a 10 year old deck.
seymore replied to Adrian's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
Nice cleaning job Adrian:cool: I think that deck is still thirsty for some oil and pigment.Did the customer want a "natural" finish not too dark? I think when decks a real old it's hard to make them look good without a darker pigment. -
Repairing a finish
seymore replied to RCBill's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
You not lying Ken when you say where do you stop?? Cause you will basically have to restain the whole deck to get an even looking finish.Spot cleaning and staining will always be tough to match up. Good luck Bill and hope that stain company will pay you good to fix someone's mess. -

Repairing a finish
seymore replied to RCBill's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
You could just use their deck washing "sodium hypochlorite" chem my guess to light clean the deck. Then re apply the same finish that's on the deck.
