Gazebo cedar shake nightmare
seymore replied to RPetry's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
Rick you shouldn't have a hard time with Cypress that is soo much like cedar but is natually white. So your color shades my vary some but not much. I haven't seen Cypress since i lived in Cecilia Louisiana where it''s allover the place being all in the Henderson swamps! Gee that color sample is a toss up huh eenie meenie might MOE? I like showing pics of the whole job after 2 coats on a complete job cause samples are always so light looking and are hardly true to the finished product. Do you have a truck full of oil ready to back up to the job and dump it on the deck? :D -
Go get em CRIME DOG lock and load!

house washing with deck cleaning
seymore replied to JohnW's question in Residential Pressure Washing
Cleaning and sealing a deck is SOO easy and yet be so hard if it's not cleaned with the right products for the job at hand. There are some basic cleaning steps you always take to properly clean the job.Old stain on the deck well use a stripper "let it dwell 15-20 min" keeping it wet to remove the old stain. You then p/wash it off using low pressure to not damage the wood more than it already is.Once you have remove the old stain you now apply brightner/neutralizer "acid wash" to the deck then rinse. Now if you have mildew on the deck you use a bleach and soap mixture to romove and kill the mildew.I don't always use oxalic after bleaching but some guys do.You do not want to mix the oxalic and bleach together !! I will use a bleach solution on non stained decks that are just grey/mildewed let it dwell then p/wash it off. Staining a deck is yet a whole new book i could type by itslef but if you can't find the help you need from the previous post in the search... Feel free to call me anytime i'll help ya figure out what you need to do to get the job done the right way.. Whewww i think i'm still high from the 30 gallons of bleach i sprayed today cleaning 2 cedar houses i stained 8yrs. ago..:headspin: :groovy: :lgbonk: -

Fence Pricing-Benchmarking
seymore replied to bforbis's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
The chemicals are cheap and I look at it hourly to clean and shouldn't be that bad but it's hard not seeing a test spot. This job for instance the cleaning wouldn't be all that bad except if they wanted the underside of the deck done YUK! The hardest thing on this job to stain would be the frigging lattice so damm time consuming to protect the house. -
Fence Pricing-Benchmarking
seymore replied to bforbis's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
Brent, Clean and seal the fence i would say $1500-$2000 would be fair cause that's a lot of wood. The deck $600 to clean and $1000 to seal it...Thank you come again. I'm not sure how much you gonna pay for the WTW and how much margin you work on labor etc?? If the fence is never stained why strip it? -

Deck in a Day
seymore replied to PressurePros's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
That's that sweet smeling creosote the put on those RR ties. Nobody could expect those big pieces of wood to look any better unless you paint them. Ken that job looks like a little more than a $500 job after the labor stain etc.?Something like this is more than worth it for the generous donation of your time and $$. I'll wave your fees to BDA Assn.for that generous offer..;) -
Problems today
seymore replied to Don M.'s question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
P.S I would re-strip the deck if you are not going to use a similar type stain/color.If you are going to to use a reddish color oil base stain it will blend in with the left over stain still in the wood. -
Problems today
seymore replied to Don M.'s question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
It looks to me there is still old stain on the wood so the wood won't be as bright after you used the oxalic. It still has a reddish look from the old sealer. -

Fix a finish
seymore replied to RCBill's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
Bill you could just apply more RS stain to to the wood since it was old wood .It just need to get more pigment into the wood. Then the deck may look more uniform in color. You might want to test some area applying more stain abd see how it looks -
