Cedar fence cleaned w/questions
seymore replied to Larry B's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
Looks good to me Larry  what ya srip it with? You probally won't even see those knots that you couldn't get all the old finish when it dries. Are you going to stian it? You can spot strip and it not going to hurt.Once it looks like you have all the old finished stripped. When you brighten is when you want to spray the fence even so it's not all blotchy. -

The best way to seal wood... ?
seymore replied to PressurePros's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
Ken, If decks are in some harsh climates,I would idealy like to to light clean and reseal once a year.I'm talking mostly PT decks by the way, cedar decks I would think need just the same care if not more. These decks just dry out so bad in all this hot sun. I've never seen a deck with multiple coats of stain especially oil base but my guess it will get really DARK.You have to at least clean the deck every other year between restaining. You have some people that live in the boonies and have trees everywhere. These decks will get dirty very quickly and will require cleaning atleast once a year. Oh yeah the less you strip a deck the better!! -

Deckster Wand
seymore replied to aph111's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
CCPC, I get them from my supplier of Gray Away Texas Wood Products in Plano Tx. 972-423-0211 Hmmm i think i've been using the same trigger for 6 months or so.I've been using these triggers for years and have been very pleased on how they hold up.Now they are a little pricey at $25 a pop but i think they are more than worth it.They also sell the plastic wand to match the trigger but i still use the 4' brass wand. -

seymore replied to aph111's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
ohh it's about 40-$50 for the complete wand Mike the tips are $10 for the small tip and $5 for the big tips. I love the 4' wand it's great to reach those high places instead of climbing a ladder. -
Replacing Wood
seymore replied to RCBill's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
Bill My hardest thing to do is to remove the old board without damaging the surrounding boards. So by cutting the board in sections with the saw zaw and all you have are little sections to pull up rather than the whole board at once. -

Here is a pic of the trigger made by Spray systems Inc.and it holds up pretty good for using bleach, stripper etc -
Replacing Wood

So is using that nail puller get the old nails pretty fast and so so easy? I'll mostly cut my board out with a saw zaw then pry the board up.It's not always so easy to remove! -

Deckster Wand
seymore replied to aph111's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
I buy the parts from Tom Baker who owns Texas Wood Products in Plano. When he ships me my pallets of stain he'll send them with my order.I'll add the pipe ext to give a handle to hold on to. The wand and trigger is a little pricey but if you take care of them they will last.I also buy the tips from him also 2 sizes is all you need.I use them for staining and cleaning i've never used anything else. Call me if you want one Art i'll hook a brother up  -

Darker sealer spots???
seymore replied to FullBlast's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
Well we get a 100# box for $100 i believe and we re-use them quite a bit till they get too soaked. They are all white light cotton sheets so the plants can breath  -

Here's what i use this is the 4 ft wand and i also have a 3ft wand for smaller tight jobs. This type of wand makes it easier to spray tall arbors and also those 8' high fences. -

Darker sealer spots???
seymore replied to FullBlast's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
Did you use the oil base or water base. If the rain caused some spots you should be able to rub those out with some mineral spirits. Then touch those spots up and blend them in. what are your main problems with this deck the drip marks? -
Darker sealer spots???
seymore replied to FullBlast's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
1..Clean the deck and remove any old finish. 2.. Do any prep work if needed..plastic,cover plants etc. 3.. Use a GOOD penetrating stain with good oils in it ..No Linseed oil ,No veggie oil like Sherwin Williams has. Also no film forming stains either. I spray all my jobs"shurflo" handrails etc. and backpad i never have a problem with color variation.I also use a stain that blends in great that won't leave drip marks. If that S/W stain is that hard to work with it doesn't sound like it's worth using. -
Help with bid
seymore replied to flimmy's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
Scott I mostly work on rough sawn cedar and it can get fuzzy after stripping and P/washing. The "greying"dead wood fibers on the cedar will cause it to look furry if not all removed. I've seen some rough cedar get fuzzy and some not get fuzzy. The times that had no furring was when i used the least harsh chems with little pressure. Tony you killing me over here.. popcorn fart..:rotfl: -
Help with bid
seymore replied to flimmy's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
Well i would stay away from Deckscapes especially that oil base it's veggie oil.You are just asking for mildew problems with that type of oil base. The water base you really want to stay away from cause it doesn't keep the wood moist and it will dry up fast. You want to stay with a penetrating parafin oil base stain. Also stay away from film forming products. I've never used Ready Seal but there are a lot of guys that have good luck with it.The colors look good and natural but it's a little light pigment wise for me.I live in a pretty HOT climate here in Texas and lighter pigmented stains don't hold up for the 2 yrs for decks. I myself have only used Baker's Gray Away wood seal and have been using it for over 10 yrs. It's been a great stain to work with easy to apply and my cutomers love the color tones. It's also reasonably priced and you get good sqft. per gallon numbers so you are able to make good $$.It's also has been field tested by the Texas Forest Service and has great results. I would test an area on the building first with a cleaner not a stripper and see how well it cleans up.If you can help from not having to use a stripper it would be good for the wood. You won't get to much fuzzies if you don't use a stripper. The biulding doesn't look in that bad of shape it should clean up pretty easy I only use my stripper mix and oxalic mix i make myself and a bleach/soap mixture for all my cleaning. -
