  1. Dear PWNA,

Here is the latest copy of the Water Works Newsletter!

We Welcome Spring... but not the

    "Splash & Dashers"

Spring has sprung across North America and, with the return of the robins, the

appearance of tulips and the scent of fresh cut lawn grass comes something all

professional power washers dread: the annual appearance of the "Splash and

    Dashers"!

Don't know what a "Splash and Dasher" is? Sure you do! These are the folks

that spend the winter deciding they can get rich by becoming power washers.

All you need is a truck, some equipment and a business card! Right?

While we applaud and encourage legitimate entrepreneurs who want to start

new businesses and conduct the necessary research to do it right... Splash and

Dashers (S&D) are a different breed. They're usually untrained, unqualified,

unethical and uninsured. They are the nemesis of our industry, often

undermining all of the hard work we put into building ethical businesses,

providing excellent customer service and being environmentally responsible.

    S&D Defense Strategy #1

Your membership in and affiliation with the PWNA is your best defense against

the "Splash and Dashers." It sets you apart from the non-professionals and is

proof of your long-term commitment to industry, integrity, continuing

    education, professionalism and community.

    S&D Defense Strategy #2

Another way you can set a high standard of excellence and outshine the Splash

and Dashers is to participate in PWNA's newest professional certification

process: The Water Reclaimer Program. Check it out at:

These individuals will share frank and honest advice on how they advanced

    their businesses.

The conference will also have a great line-up of our valued distributors and

only get to see on a Website or in a catalogue.

    2010 PWNA Convention/

    Fall Technical Seminar

    Inspiring Keynote Speaker: Steve Stephens

A major highlight of PWNA's 2010 Convention & Fall Technical Seminar,

October 21-23, is Friday afternoon's keynote speaker: Steve Stephens.

As the owner and founder of HydroTech Pressure Cleaning Technologies, Inc.,

the HydroTech Training Facility for pressure cleaning contractors, and Steve

Stephens Consulting, this man's list of professional accomplishments is

remarkable. He contributes his success to an ongoing commitment to

excellence, research and development, and the desire to help others succeed.

Having worked in this industry since 1980, he takes a personal interest in the

growth and reputation of power washing professionals.

Steve Stephens "the author" is nationally recognized as one of the top experts

in the power washing industry. He wrote the book, Marketing Magic, is a

contributing writer and consultant for Cleaner Times Magazine, and

contributing author to the Power Washer's Guidebook. His company,

HydroTech, Inc., was featured on the cover of Pressure Concepts Magazine as a

model of integrity, character and image.

Among other commitments, Steve Stephens "the volunteer" has served on the

Board of Directors for PWNA, as Chairman of the Technical Support Network

and was our keynote speaker in 2001.

Through his businesses, school, consulting services and publications, Steve

Stephens "the motivational speaker" has helped hundreds of businesses get a

    jumpstart on success.

Joe Walters, Walters Insurance Agency, said; "Steve Stephens has proven to

be a talented and inspirational speaker the many times he has worked with

Power Washers of North America. Always the professional, Steve researches

the nuances of the industry ... to bring the greatest impact to his

presentations. An investment of time with Steve is an investment in your future

    business success."

"By hiring Steve Stephens, [you] are guaranteed a presentation that is

informative and energetic... with requests from the attendees for a repeat

appearance," remarked Andrew Avery, Avery Management Group."

"Steve conveys his message [of motivation] with such energy and confidence

that he inspires his audience, giving them the impetus needed to achieve

greatness not only in business, but in their personal lives as well," adds

Charlene Yarbrough, Publisher of Cleaner Times Magazine."

What's even more extraordinary than Steve's list of professional undertakings,

however, is how his tenacity and spirit has helped him overcome unimaginable

personal challenges. In December 2008, Steve was left partially paralyzed after

a horrific car crash. Rather than dwell on the challenges, he embraced them,

undergoing months of intensive physical therapy and approaching life with a

    "can do" attitude.

In between medical appointments and intensive rehabilitation physiotherapy,

Steve continues a rigorous schedule of public speaking engagements. We are

honored that he has made the commitment to attend PWNA's fall convention to

share his inspirational spirit with us.

    Powerful

    Marketing Tip

Are you collecting a customer database? If so, are you asking customers for

their email addresses, as well as phone numbers? Email marketing through

various social media networks is quickly becoming mainstream.

Sending "email blasts" through services such as Constant Contact is one way

you can effectively advertise and promote your business. It is cost-effective

and - because you are not using any paper and spending money on postage - it

    is environmentally responsible, too!

    PWNA Update

    March 2010

    From Dan Galvin, President

PWNA is increasing efforts to provide further educational opportunities and promote the Association to a broader base of contractors in 2010 by participating in a series of National Cleaning Expos being held across the USA. At the inaugural event, February 19 & 20 in New Orleans, the PWNA was represented by our Executive Director, Mike Hilborn (Roof to Deck Restoration), and fellow Board Members Daryl Mirza (Facilitech) and Michael Hinderliter (Steam-Away).

More than 50 industry representatives, some of whom were current PWNA members, attended this event. While further education is the main objective of the Expos, they are also turning out to be great for membership recruitment as well! We are pleased to welcome 11 new PWNA members who joined after participating in the program!

The National Cleaning Expos are co-sponsored by PWNA and Power Washers International (***) and are comprised of a number of informative and interactive round table discussions. While a series of power washing "Boot Camps" are offered as additional learning opportunities, the main focus of the event is more about building your business.

At the February event, for example, a representative from City of New Orleans gave an excellent presentation on how to secure city contracts. Other speakers addressed the all-important issue of having a business plan, building your business by having written processes and procedures, and implementing internal organization systems. The underlying theme of all of these business-building workshops is that we all have to be active in our business in order to run them profitably and effectively.

For the PWNA Boot Camps - which are essentially a condensed version of the full-day programs taught at the annual PWNA convention - Mike Hinderliter tackled the topic of truck/fleet washing and Mike Hilborn taught wood restoration.

Hilborn reports that he spoke with several people who attended the February Expo and many said it was the best round table they had ever been to. Attendees appreciated the fact that it was more business focused and that the Boot Camps were optional, allowing delegates to opt out if the topic had no relation to their specific business focus.

In total, PWNA's participation in the various 2010 National Cleaning Expo Round Table will result in the delivery of over 18 intense training educational programs over the next few months. The round tables will provide a platform to help us reduce mistakes and pitfalls when starting up a new service, showcase equipment and products, introduce how to perform various services, as well as provide tips and tricks on marketing, payroll, managing financials and how to keep your business running. If you want to grow your business in 2010 and beyond you can't afford to miss the education you will receive.

The next National Cleaning Expo will be held in Atlanta at Sun Brite Supply, March 19th and 20th.

    HINDERL.jpg

Mike Hinderliter has been in the power washing industry for over 25 years. While growing up whenever Michael asked his father for money, instead of his father opening up his own wallet, he gave Michael a pressure washer and said "go earn it." That is where it all began. Mike graduated from college with a degree in accounting. His business provides employment for over 60 people working in mobile truck washing, stationary truck washing and kitchen exhaust cleaning. He has developed systems to run these various businesses to maximize their potential. Mike has also developed his own software to enhance operational efficiency. If you have ever wondered how to get started in truck washing or if you are already involved in truck washing and want to take it to the next level, this is the boot camp for you. The cost is $169.00 per person.

Call 1-800-393-7962 or go to www.pwna.org to register.

Mike Hilborn is one of the leaders in the wood restoration industry. Mike has operations in Chicago, Milwaukee, and Minneapolis/St. Paul. He has franchises in North Dakota, Minnesota and Wisconsin. He has created comprehensive training and safety DVDs for the efficient and consistent training of all employees and franchisees. After his employees have watched each DVD, their retention is measured with online testing. During the winter months his company designs and installs holiday lighting. His company has decorated hotels, shopping centers, restaurants, and banks as well as high end homes. Mike's company also removes ice dams throughout the Midwest. Mike is a member of the Wood Coatings Forest Products Committee and he also hosts a weekly radio show called the Roof-to-Deck Home Show. Come spend time with this established businessperson and get the information you need to not only run a successful business but to add wood restoration to your list of services.

  5. The PWNA will be very active this year. The ORG has over the last couple of years reorganized it's business model. That has paid off and now the ORG is in the best shape financially since conception. We have some strong people on the Board again and new sence of energy. Plans are to attend Round Tables throughout the year teaching and training and building membership, and then of coure our annual Convention in October which we hope will be one of our biggest. New classes and teachers. We have just started a new program that I hope everyone will embrace and participate. Please go to our web site to view at www.pwna.org I would like to say I'm very excited about the PWNA, It's been a tough ride for the last couple of years with alot of criticism, some deserving, mostly not, but we held to the plan of making it a viable, effective none profit association. It's there now and now is the time for power washers big or small to support this org to continue the momentom we have achieved. We need to unite in this industry and have one voice! There is power in numbers and that we better be prepared for changes that are comming. Finally, I would like say, I'm very proud of what we have accomplished and my hope is that there would be renewed intrest in the PWNA. 2010 PWNA ALL THE WAY!

  6. PWNA Update

    June 2009

    From Dan Galvin, President

    It’s “Clean Across America” Time

PWNA is inviting members to participate in the Clean Across America community service program this July. This national event is a joint venture with Take Pride in America®, a national partnership program aimed at increasing volunteer service on America’s public lands. In past years, PWNA has tackled some big projects – like power washing the Lincoln and Jefferson Memorials – but we recognize that small projects are equally as important.

PWNA members are encouraged to get their staff and families help to identify potential community clean-up projects, large or small. It can be something as simple as power washing the steps of a local church to washing statues in a park while a volunteer crew cleans up the litter.

Be sure to take pictures of your event and send a note to head office about your project. We like to track the number of projects completed by members of the association. It’s a “Good News!” story that’s worth sharing.

For more information, check out www.cleanacrossamerica.info and/or www.takepride.gov.

    BMPs That Support Environmental Protection

Robert Hinderliter, PWNA’s Environmental Committee Chairman, has been busy promoting Best Management Practices (BMPs) as they relate to environmental protection and the pressure washing business. In the recent past, he has given presentations in North Carolina, California, Kansas and Texas. He will continue this educational and networking campaign in the coming months.

Robert has been instrumental in establishing Models for Ordinances, Contractor Training and Certification, and BMPs for the PWNA and other related organizations. He has been kind enough to video his EPA training seminars and has posted them on U-Tube for the benefit of others. To view these educational videos, your can simply type “EPA Power Washing” on the U-Tube search engine or (even better) go to www.pwna.org. Click on the EPA logo at the bottom of the home page and you will find direct links to the series of U-Tube videos.

Environmental protection is a hot topic right now and PWNA is ever grateful to Robert for spearheading this process. Successful implementation and acceptance of these practices is a critical step for our association and the communities where we operate our businesses. “It is important that PWNA works with industry to establish rules and regulations that are reasonable, rational and logical, rather than legislated,” says Robert.

    PWNA Conference

    October 8-10, 2009

    Chicago, Illinois

Planning is well underway for our annual convention. PWNA members are welcome to provide feedback and ideas for programs and speakers for the event. Visit pwna.org and send us an email.

The Board is also asking for suggestions from members on where to hold the 2010 event. If you have any ideas or preferences please let us know as soon as possible. Even in these tough economic times, convention space books up quickly and it is often necessary to secure a facility many months in advance.

    Website Update

Content development and site enhancements to PWNA’s new website are on-going. Be sure to check the web site often to see what your association is doing on your behalf. If you have anything suggestions for pwna.org, we’d love to hear them. Please don’t hesitate to contact us. Feedback, of any kind, is always appreciated.

The website now has opportunities for advertisers, too. If you are a supplier or manufacturer of power washing products, please check it out.

    Did You Know?

Membership of the PWNA also allows our members to be linked on our Find a Contractor or Find a Distributor/Supplier pages. Click on the membership link on this page to join us. The larger our membership, the stronger each of our businesses are.

    Questions? Concerns? Great ideas?
