mold, mildew disaster
tropical wave posted a question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
Earlier I posted the pics of this disaster....got it cleaned and defelted....I also found out that this deck isnt 16 years old, but its actually 25 years plus !!!! Built around 1980....found that out after a little investigating with the guy who built it....anyway, after 25 years of Chicago weather it is not in prime condition, but we're gonna give it the college try -

solid latex
tropical wave replied to Barry M's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
like anything else, it depends on the wood.....on newer lumber, they last and last, but they get torn up on older stuff when the wool snags the splinters etc....they're just awesome for spindles when I dont spray (bben to damn windy lately to spray) pads and paddles and brushes today. and they ain't expensive. so I just ordered a boatload (well, maybe 15) -

Olympic Removed
tropical wave posted a question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
I haven't posted anything meaningful is awhile, so I figured I'd share this one. This had some cruddy olympic, and many areas had several coats one on top of another, giving it the look of solid paint........ -

Thanks guys n gal, I thought it would have been more of a nightmare to strip than it turned out to be. I did a test with full strength SH and it melted the thickest areas on the verticals in less than 7 minutes, so to avoid severe fuzz and not punish the wood too much, I cut the TimberStrip Pro to 5-6 oz per gallon, lengthened the dwell a bit and it worked well. I easily could have went to 4 oz per gallon but didn't. (hindsight) Some spindles hung on tight, but were easily cleaned up with the makita defelter. The fascia and the top rails worried me with numerous coats, but wow, they melted away and no fuzz to boot. -

The customer was, lets say "difficult" to be nice, but I think he was pretty satisfied when it was all said and done..... -

wood defender makes a gray sealer that may be what your looking for if he definetly wants it sealed as opposed to letting it gray naturally -
you would be amazed at what these people can do.....easily find where you live, what IP you use, the location of your network etc.... ive been to too much training on this topic, and its truly scary, with the correct software, and websites, these people along with the police (which is good) can take minimal computer info, ie: your website, or email address and within 3 minutes have an overhead picture of your house with driving directions........it sucks, but its the way it is. another thing these nut jobs do is take kiddie pics off legit websites, digitally alter them and sell them worldwide as kiddie porn....seen it done a zillion times. Im part of the IL Attorney Generals task force which works kiddie porn cases, website (chat) predators etc....its a real big deal obviously, y'all can do whatever you like, and odds are nothing will happen, but its a real issue... photos of the kids stay off the internet

I havent heard their radio ads up here in awhile....??? and Ive never run into anything they've done either...thank goodness -
Monday Im going to do a test on this, but I wanted your thoughts before hand, just for kicks..... this is Olympic Natural Look Protector Plus, oil base stain, the label says for use on brown pressure treated lumber. its a linseed based product with some parafin wax in it.....the floor has failed quite a bit and the homeowner zig-zaged it up with a pressure washer. my concern is the top rail, steps, supports and fascia, where there appears to be a few coats on it....it looks like brown paint and is shiney, but the customer swears its just a second coat of the same stuff. If I cant strip it properly with TimberStrip and use a semi-trans, he's open to a solid like cabots....if thats the route, is it just a deep clean, primer and sealer? or what?

Tough Strip?

thanks shane-o, I can always count on you!!!!!! -
hey hugh, how have you been? at the moment, I get by with a 10 foot step ladder and a 24 foot extension. I'd have a hard time getting up on some roofs with the 24, but Ive yet to run into that problem....

Here is an issue Ive not dealt with yet, but I'm sure many of you have all over the country....... I have a deck to do that has 7 year old CWF on the cedar.....I should have no problems with the strip, my question is the railing and spindles on the back of the elevation, belly right up to the above ground pool. 1) I was thinking of tarping the outside of the rails so the tarp blocks the striper and forces the chems and water down under the deck between pool and the underside, but rinsing the outside and the top handrail will be a PITA. 2) how bad is it if some striper and crud gets in the pool.....??? covering the entire pool isn't really an option, its big and oval and it will just puddle up in the middle and sag......for the outside, spraying in I may need to actually get in the pool, which is quite lame but I guess we'll see......

I know about the foamer, its just that I have a big ole jug of dawn for a squirt which goes in the mix when cleaning wood too....so, since its on the trailer, I toss in a squirt for the house wash too.... -

agreed, the most amazing night sky I ever saw was while cruising around the atlantic in the middle of the night in the coast guard. you can actually see satelites screaming by with the naked eye (computer on board told us when they were passing over and from what direction, could see the different colors reflecting the light, and could follow them from horizon to horizon in a matter of seconds, was wild)

Solid Color Stains For Combo Decks
tropical wave replied to smokey51's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
yea, dont put paint on a deck, even the spindles, water WILL find its way in and start rotting the wood before the paint even starts to bubble up. cabots used to be pretty good with their solids, but sounds like its turning into cocka.
