mold, mildew disaster
tropical wave replied to tropical wave's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
Ken....Thanks, but after I get another 10 years and a thousand decks under my belt, then "maybe".... LOL :) Tony.....got quite a few pics, and I think your right about bringing wood back from the grave, I dont see many like this even standing after the neglect...whats kept this thing up is that the structure is super beefy....all the posts are 6x6's, and the deck boards arent the standard 5/4 x 6, these are all 2x6's.....very stout !! AC, with the wood being soooooo old and UV damaged, there was nothing that would prevent furring the surface.....we remove the fuzzies with a Makita polisher outfitted with 9" 3m defelting pads, and a couple different type sanders with 60 grit -
funny stuff.....fat bobby is a jag-bag...always disliked him and his teams, just wish JoPa coulda kept wining at PSU to keep his record down....for years they never played anyone worth a damn except maybe 2-3 games a year.... Im really surprised Im not reading how everyone just LOVES the Irish.... I have to hear that BS the whole season here.....but its good that they stink

probably never....he's so old school football, hard nose etc etc....just cant compete against most of the big 10 (11) until they recruit more from around the country.... ive always liked the plain uniforms, white helmets, no names on jerseys, black shoes.....liked them since I was a kid.....and JoPa was the coach then too.....and I follow the Gators because I love florida....but hate the seminoles and their stupid tomahawk chop.....

Deck Spindles
tropical wave replied to troyt's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
Troyt, for chem spraying I usually use a plastic chem wand and gun made by t-jet, which has an adjustable cone tip..... for spraying sealer I use the pressure adjustable trigger gun from sunbrite supply....the gun has a pressure wheel which reduces the pressure and volume of the spray....this also uses an adjustable cone spray tip.....we have a couple of the fan tips, which Ive tried but prefer the cone spray better....80 degree pattern is wide and good for spraying lawns etc...not pin point control... I dont know what the price is for the pump with a switch already mounted, but they are really easy to install yourself....from the battery the negative black wire gets wired direct and the red positive gets placed between the battery and the pump....simple we have the pumps with the adjustable pressure switch ,I think the bypass models are more expensive too, it pretty much comes down to what you want.... I spent the xtra 20 bucks and got the "all viton" seals pump.... hope this helps, Mike -

we have 2 shurflos, a 1.0 @ 60 and a 1.2 @ 60, both work fine and both are mounted on carts...both use 50 feet of braided hose and I think are rated at 300psi.....Ive tinkered with the setups and probably have some unnessesary things attached, but I like having them there, (ball valves on the hose ends, plugs and QC's all over the place, switches and fuses in the electrical circuits) and like Shane responded, just clean them out when done and they work fine.......I also replaced the standard o-rings in the QC's with viton o-rings, since I had a bag of them and too much time on my hands one day... -
for anyone that has used or knows about wood defender, is it a one coat application ? If it is, would there be any reason to (or not to) apply a second coat...???? just curious how it works compared to ready Seal, as it is (allegedly) very similar to the way its made (so Ive heard) If it is similar, why is RS 2 coats and wood defender one?

wood defender
tropical wave replied to tropical wave's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
thanks Reed....whats your "opinion" of WD vs RS? (not trying to put you on the spot here, just fishing in the pond of professionals..... :) ) PM or Email.... Mike, thanks for responding, so you found that a second coat on top of a dry 1st coat worked fine...?? thats what I was looking to hear...!!  -

I shurflo most, but if they cant be sprayed for whatever reason, the stain paddles are fantastic !!!!!!! -
its brutaly tuff to quit dipping...I really need to, but I know the rage would get me in hot water......scott, I really can identify with the "stupid people" and its amplified 100% when the rage sets in.... and I'm a Kodiak guy (Bear, Behr, Bare) which is pretty potent crap..... if I had to guess, Id say your a Kodiak or Cope fella..... :)

tropical wave replied to tropical wave's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
Thanks guys....Ive not used the WD either Jim ,I was wondering if they are both penetrating oil (same) and they apply the same, why wouldnt the wood drink up the sealer like it does with RS? I read an old post which stated that the silly-cone was a trace amount, but it is still in there....right? I guess what Im trying to ask is, if they're so similiar, no laps, no drips blah, blah, blah...the WD should be able to get 2 coats without any problems ..right? unless it doesn't need it, of course.... Celeste, I sent a couple emails to standard awhile back and asked a couple questions regarding the WD after researching their website.... I never heard back.....and it wasnt like I was asking for free stuff or anything, just had questions about the product that weren't explained on the site.... oh well thanks again -
Thanks Jeff......where do you advertise this at? flyers at marinas etc? Im surprised theres no chlorine involved for all that algae......?? thanks for the answers.. :)

a couple of things here: 1. as far as quitting----nicotine is harder to kick than heroin (fact) !!! I smoke when I drink a few beers (or a lot) but mostly I chew (snuff) which is brutal to quit, the levels of nicotine are much more concentrated than smoking. in order for me to quit (which I'd LOVE to do) I would be covered head to toe in patches and chewing nico-gum all day....... 2. cell phones (Jon) Chicago just recently passed a city ord requiring hands free cell use in cars......its now the LAW in Chicago only, not Cook County or the state, just in the city limits....how freakin lame is that? They gave a 1 week grace period and everyone was running out to get their stupid star trek funky blue-tooth ear wands..... 3. doing what I do, and every state is different, the "make sure he falls inside the house" may not be enough.....there needs to be a "threat" of physical harm to you or another before you remove his brain from his cranium :) via a 1100 FPS hollowpoint..... the presence of a weapon or a verbal threat of violence is perfect...and if he's not among the living anymore, he cant B.S. with some story about how he had the wrong house....then YOU get to tell the story to the police.... sweet deal then.... (dead men tell no tales)

Behr gone, RS Natural Cedar
tropical wave replied to tropical wave's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
thanks man, I HATE behr, .... it blows ......I have some really good pics of the floor before and during stripping.....it was almost solid looking and flaking...yuk -
Jeff, Im not doing this but I think I should...there are sooooo many boats in and around the Chicago lakefront.....they all get pulled before winter and go into storage.....Im sure the storage yards provide this service before winterizing the boats....I still think I need to look into this....what type chems are you using? and is there anything else you'd like to pass along that may help some of us that may explore this area....... see what happens, you ask a question and get no answers but a boat load (no-pun intended) of questions back at you......

Ive had a couple issues with electricity while doing this. had a faulty gfi exterior outlet go up in flames....(about made a mess in my pants, as nodody was home to shut down the power) and also got a bit worried doing a wood job where the main support post was about 24 feet up and the main electrical service entered the house at the top of this 6x6 post.....needless to say stripping then sealing wayyyyyyy up there kind of blew...... I have exp working with electricity, but the moment you get careless and dont respect it, is when it gets ya..... when working around power lines etc, decide what your going to do, start doing it, then pause, look, and make sure youre doing it safely.....its like teaching kids to cross the street: look left, right, the left again before proceeding

square foot to linear foot conversion?
tropical wave replied to a68cudas's question in Residential Pressure Washing
D. think of it like a fence..... 100 foot long fence is 100 linear feet (regardless of height) , if doing both sides it would be 200 linear feet...... if the same fence was 6 feet tall and 100 feet long it would be 600 sq feet (6X100), then obviously both sides would be 1200 sq ft. hope that makes sense..
