redwood double porch
tropical wave replied to tropical wave's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
Thanks Carlos.....the owner was pleased, tossed me a little xtra cash..... then, after I have everything all wrapped up and we're BS'n, she goes "that was a lot of work, you should charge more".......she got some bids that were way up there, she told me that NOBODY wanted to do the underside......(neither did I) she was having all kinds of work done, the porch, garage getting rebuilt, new paver driveway......it was contractor fest every day.... take care and be safe my man !! -
Scott, sounds like a hell of nice thing to do..... good luck with it, and be safe while doing it

tropical wave replied to tropical wave's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
jon, I used the regular RS formula based on the age of the redwood, the special redwood only wasnt required.... beth, this was the first redwood project Ive done, dont find it too much here that Ive found.......very nice looking wood, as long as its taken care of. I was looking at some of the "before" pics, and this thing was nasty  -

sealed this thing a while back, but it was too dark outside for the pics to look good.......went by today and took a few pictures in better light.... its Ready Seal Nat Cedar on redwood........ and doing the underside was a real PITA  -
Thank you

We do the cost of the lumber plus an hourly rate for the install (including the drive to HD or wherever  ) -
thats awesome Craig....should be on the tour !!! well, you can get a bit older and hit the senior tour, or get on the Hooters tour or something.... after that pic was taken, did you turn on it and crush it baseball style like Tiger?

bill, how did you apply the RS? also, was the oz brush heavy and cumbersome or is it relatively easy to handle..... looks good  -

Phil, we just got back from FL and saw some kids doing some crazy sh*t on skimboards......they were pretty good at it but some wipeouts were nuts!! good luck to him..... but being in 2 inches of water is better than being bit by a bull shark like the 3 were while we were there......2 up north in the panhandle and 1 south by Ft Myers.....

Yes, I see the point, Ive always seen the point and I understand quite well...I wasnt making excuses. I guess you could vote for the right politicians, or grab a paper sign and stand on the side of the road asking for people who agree to honk their horns....and after that doesn't work, maybe the answer is to do as our forefathers did, exercise your second amendment right, take up arms, form a militia and take on the government.....see where that'll land ya  -

its the same situation....its all about money, the city wants to expand the huge airport to keep a third airport from being built in the south suburbs, which would take money (airlines, parking, workers, etc) from Chicago...its always about the bottom line, always -

Phil and Mike, I agree with both, 100%, and I gripe too, and if I was going to lose my property to a strip mall I'd be outraged and fight the fight with everything I had. I'm not saying its OK, because it is not, just taking a step back and realizing that this is still the best country to be from without bashing the USA...... we live like the fat cats on the planet and have more "stuff" than any of the 5 billion people we share it with (and I'm glad for that).. which is why we have a huge 2 sided problem: 3/4 of the planet wants to come here to live, work, prosper or just sponge our money, the other 1/4 wants us all dead, for the same reasons we love it here. in my "other" job, ( a part of it) I have to deal with foreigners that come here (legally and not) make boatloads of money (legally and not) then smuggle it out, our job is to find the ones that are destined to the middle east to support the "jihad" against the West.....these people HATE us so bad, it is unbelievable!! even the ones that are not criminals, HATE us and our country, they just love our money.......when is the last time anybody has been to a dunkin donuts or 7-11 where English was spoken?? when I have to interview some of these people, they think we're all pigs, so I like to remind them that our borders are fairly open, the door swings both ways and if they dont like it here, they can go back to their mud huts and mules.... here, our PITA mayor is trying to expand O'Hare airport by scooping up entire neighborhoods in 4 chicago suburbs, 100's of homes and businesses...private folks as well as other cities are fighting against it, but unfortunately it looks like they're going to lose, the bigger, richer more powerful are going to win this one........... and I agree, it blows, and is wrong........... and as Im typing this, Im seeing London being blown up as we go back to orange, so looks like no PW'n today.... -
I think this post was brought back from April 1977.........

Are there any other countries anybody would rather live in ? we all (me included) get in quite a habit of moaning and groaning about how crappy things are, would anybody rather live in egypt, iran, somalia, cambodia etc etc...???? be lucky to own a mud hut or a mule....... -
Bill, if that deck is 16 years old and been neglected, its going to fur some.... the first thing is to let the customer know the real expectations..it probably wont look brand new, it's old exterior wood, not an interior hard wood floor......the areas that are in the sun are going to fur more than other areas, If you ever get the unfortunate task of doing a deck underside you'll see the underside won't fur at all and the topside will...(damn UV rays)... I havent tried the osborne brush yet, but use the makita with the defelting pads and a 5" random orbit sander with 60 grit paper..... as far as the pics you posted, from what I can tell, the wood doesn't need a solid, but it does look like some of the wood is still a bit gray, but it could just be the way I'm seeing the pics.....dont try a transparent over remaining gray, yuk...........and the nails will need to be reset, you'll tear thru sand paper like crazy.....

For small stuff like that we use espec, but thats catalog mostly too...... try higherpowersupplies.com or pwmall.com............ have gotten stuff from both of them too, no complaints..............

Up here, our problem (mostly with the full time job) is the gypsy scams. They prey on the elderly with the scam of driveway resurfacing/sealing. they give a ridiculous low price, then smear oily water all over the black top, collect cash and leave, looks shiny and the seniors just got scammed, BADLY.... they do the same thing with roofs, tree limb cutting etc, they grab a deposit on a job that really does need to be done, and scoot.... the old folks dont seek them out, these jerks drive around in their pickups looking for victims, see a home that needs some sort of work and the scam is on....... the problem is that when I arrive to interview the victims, they make poor witnesses due to their age, dont remember what they looked like, what type or color the truck was, what state the plates were from etc etc.... its a shame and you really feel bad for the people, fixed income, and all.... now they've been doing the scam/burglary to the elderly, a 2-4 gypsy crew will do the same as above, but when one is speaking with the elderly homeowner, they'll take the victim in the back and talk about their trees, roof, garage or whatever, and the other 2 or 3 will enter the house and steal cash, jewelry etc.....they'll then tell the victim they'll return later to start the job or not and the victim wont know they've just been victimized for quite awhile.......its really hard to get these guys because the victims usually cant help with identifications....... we have really thick books with pictures of every gypsy scamer we know of, and even when we have them look thru the books, they cant ID the bad guys......... and the bad guys know this !!!! education is the key to preventing this type of crime, neighborhood meetings and the such gets the word out....... if you have elderly family members or neighbors, PLEASE inform them of these types of crimes......

tropical wave replied to PressurePros's question in Residential Pressure Washing
Ken, as you know, some people will always, always, always sign with the cheapest bid. Regardless of the presentation, qualifications, referals etc. Its just the way it is..... :( -
EXCELLENT POINT !! the key being the terms "your methods being consistant" on each property...... also, the laundry list of her overpriced plants, see if the other properties you serviced there have any of the same type plants as she has... that could go a long way in your arguement.... good luck

you could put down canvas tarps or bed sheets along the wall, the water will pass thru and the chips will be caught......you aren't gonna catch them all, they will fly all over the place, but many will be trapped. the brick will be stronger than the mortar, be careful with crazy high pressure.
