tropical wave replied to Hydroservices's topic in Tools, Equipment & Basic Maintenance

EFC-38 and neutralizing
tropical wave replied to the_GUNN_man's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
Steve, next time your ShurFlo switch takes a dump, unplug the 2 red wires at the pressure switch and connect them together, either with a little alligator clamp or snip off the connectors and wire nut them together......this will bypass the switch and the pump will still work fine until you replace the switch.... Mine crapped out too and ShurFlo replaced mine for free also.... -
ever see this bad?
tropical wave posted a question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
I've never seen this bad a case of mold/mildew on a deck before.......I'll set up the scenario and please pass any ideas or expieriences on this way... 16 year old deck, mostly in the sun, neglected for years.....covered in mold/mildew that is so bad its actually hard and crispy....its almost like barnacles on a pier....really rough to the touch. at first glance it looks dirty and mildewy, but this is nasty.........a mix of bleach/water/soap barely loosened parts and most just laughed at this mixture........it really laughed at the stripper and the percarb........the only thing that got it was straight 10%, which I just did this test on the worse parts.......am I gonna have to drown this monster in straight chlorine ????? -
Defurring Pad
tropical wave replied to RCBill's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
Jon, will one brush last longer than 40 defelting pads, which is about the same cost...??? by the looks of the brush, it'll obviously last longer, but how much longer and are there any other benefits or drawbacks?? -
too funny Shane...

Failed Sherwin Williams Product
tropical wave replied to The Rob's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
ditto to everything above !!!! the patio underneath will be fine, soak it with water and keep it wet before, during and after........Ive never used the SW stripper, but its probably DIY garbage.........see if they'll keep their stripper and give you dropclothes or brushes of equal value....... -
I dont do roofs, so I dont prime, but the battery clips are easy, any auto parts store, most department stores, heck, even radio shack will have them.....

I guuuar-an-teee-it.
tropical wave replied to Claude Hawkins's question in Residential Pressure Washing
just guarantee they'll be happy or you'll make it right.....not that they dont have to pay.....thats BS. it may mean a trip or 2 back, which will sting a bit, but not getting paid at all is BAD. pretty much a "satisfaction guaranteed"........ -
pressure actuated unloader
tropical wave replied to desi's topic in Tools, Equipment & Basic Maintenance
probably just the vibration of the machine worked it loose....the cap doesnt do anything except keep crud out of the hole.....down inside the hole there is a bolt, nut, allen screw or whatever your machine uses, this is what actually adjusts the pressure (and volume) of the machine if you actually use the knob to adjust your settings......I (as do most) use different nozzles to adjust pressure and dont mess with the adjustable unloader... if you turn the knob to reduce and then crank it back up but the pressure refuses to return up, pop the cap and tighten the bolt, nut, screw or whatever back down.......it happens -
that was sweet of you guys to do....... feels good to help people doesnt it ? you guys just got that much closer to the promised land when its all said and done !!!

I read the question a couple of times and the o-ring answers are great, but just in case the wand is leaking where the qc attaches to the wand I'll toss out this: grab the wand with a pipe wrench and unscrew the qc.....add a few wraps of teflon tape and screw the qc back on..... I dont trust factory assembly anyway, so if I order something that comes with a plug and/or a qc already attached, I take them off and teflon tape them first thing.

Masking tools for sealing wood
tropical wave replied to Beth n Rod's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
used lots of things on the list, and I used the Shane stapler system which works great when clamps wont work on weird rail shapes, use the small 1/4 inch staples and they pull right out with the tarp....... used duct tape on vinyl siding which worked well to hold light plastic, but duct tape on aluminum can be a no-no, (the sticky part remains on aluminum siding, but cleans up)......used a boatload of bungee cords to hold plastic around painted or aluminum posts under elevated decks........ great poll Beth, I'm sure there will be lots of new ideas coming in !! -
Prep for sealing
tropical wave replied to RCBill's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
We have a belt sander and have never used it on a deck.... the circular polisher/sander with defelting pads doesnt leave marks (as long as it is practiced with a bit and the rpm's are kept down until you get the hang of it, but it is EZ) and the defelting pads are great too !! if there are areas of remaining gray or unremoved sealer we use the defelting pads and we carry a random orbit sander too...... just a 5 inch with 60 grit, mostly for tight areas like spindles etc..... -
Behr premium with Silicone
tropical wave posted a question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
Stripped a deck today that was sealed with Behr Premium redwood "Deep Oil Penetrating Formula with EZ water cleanup" The can had a smaller label which says "Silicone Enhanced for Added Durability"...................... Some of the areas, like rails and some of the floor had a double coat, lap marks and some heavy thick drips......99.5% was removed and the little that remained will be removed when defurring. -

Thanks Carlos............ we used TimberStrip (TimberPro line of products) and neutralized with TimberBrite Oxalic............ now that it is dry, it looks even better, almost like new  -
add chlorine to the mix and let it fly....... should be fine

mixing chems
tropical wave replied to jnoden's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
drill mixer, sometimes I'll use the mixer with old fashioned arm power.... the stripper and the oxalic mixes pretty easy.....percarb and cold water is a little tougher, so the drill for sure -
Behr premium with Silicone
tropical wave replied to tropical wave's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
thanks Ken Behr is the biggest home depot seller here in IL....havent seen a behr sealer ad on TV in years though....menards here is selling flood and wolman products. the only way to dodge the consumer reports issues is by reminding the potential customer the "report is for consumers", the magazine title is not "contractor reports".........you can also let them know that everything they need to restore their deck themselves can be found at the local DIY homecenter......nice cute little electric pressure washer (junk), stain (junk), stripper (junk), neutralizer-brightner (junk), or the super special all-in-one deck cleaner and brightner (junk), pump up sprayer, brushes, tarps, tape, and the list goes on and on.....then again I've yet to have a customer request some home center crap (knock on wood) -

Behr premium with Silicone
tropical wave replied to tropical wave's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
Tony and Shane, I was a little worried about the silicone, but like Shane mentioned, most came off pretty easy.....some spots were tougher and took a little more dwell.
