My new rig was not what I ordered !
Mathew Johnson replied to ken wiggins's topic in Tools, Equipment & Basic Maintenance
Last year I bought a couple of hudson float valves from Espec. Keep in mind it was part of a several hundred dollar order. I installed the float valve and it didn't work. I called to return it. Nooooo... they told me that since it was installed.. it couldn't be returned... Before that I had a similar problem with a turbo nozzle from them.. Needless to say I haven't spent a cent with them since then. I feel that they exemplify what poor customer service is all about. -

What makes a certification worth the $$$ to you?
Mathew Johnson replied to Beth n Rod's topic in Business Topics & Tips
Certifications hold the value that I attach to them. My customers have never heard of the PWNA or what is actually involved in my wood cert course. But I use them in my advertising, on my quotes and in every conversation that I engage with a new client. Could I do the same thing with woolmans? Yes, and I do.... Again the certs serve only two functions... THe first is that I did learn a lot from Everette at the PWNA convention last year and I learned some stuff from woolmans.. The second is that it gives me an edge over others... Whether or not my clients know what the certification means, In thier mindsm I have something that others don't. ANswers to your other questions: Am I getting the best bang for the buck: It is hard to answer this question... It is like advertising evaluation... which ad worked better? The woolmans cert probably is a good deal because people associate it with a national product line. Worth ist weigt in paper? My certification possesses the value that I choose to attach to it. I educate my clients about both the woolmans and pwna cert; they in turn use my company for services... To answer the question they both have value as percieved through my customers eyes, and thier perception is what puts money in my bank account. Is thier an expiration date? Yes, and I really thing that this is a good idea. Techniques and technology change. Products change and people tend to forget thins over time. Even the AHA required CPR cards to expire. Is thier higher levels available? No, and I am not sure I would need a higher lever for wood cert. For peoplpe who just specialize in wood, I am certain there is a lot more to know and an advanced cert course may beneift them. I would like to see a Powerwash 1000 certification - I am currently working on a Powerwash 1000 Course curriculum. Hopefully by mid-summer / fall it will be complete. Where it goes from there is unknown, LOL, it is just a sidebar winter project. I will then need to market it to an organization or sponsor. What do I need in a certification? Just what I am getting, more knowledge, a resourse bank for information and a competitive edge on my competition. Education is a great thing. Certification course are a plus to the industry and they tend to give the edge to individuals in all professions. With my wood cert on one of my occupations and my CCRN certification in my nursing field they both benifit the consumer and myself. -
I have never had a problem...

I started my business as a second career... I hold a degree in nursing, but to be honest, I am tired of the insurance companies telling me how to do my job... I agree with what you said above.... I have worked to position myself and my business to portray the professional image to my clients... My Pwashing salary has exceeded my nursing salary... I will have to flip a coin soon. Vandiesal - Well said - Image to the client is everything.

Contractor's Reaction to New Organization
Mathew Johnson replied to Beth n Rod's topic in Business Topics & Tips
Competition is healthy. But what are they competing for or against. Any new org that wants to bring info to the table to benefit the contractor is a plus for the industry? -
that is an excellent hospital as well. She will do well! Any questions, feel free to call.

Morgan, I haven't met you before, but I will say the our prayers are with you and your daughter. From my experience, as a registered nurse, keep the faith. Kids are very resilient and they are remarkable healers. If you do get the opportunity, try to get hooked up with the Shriners Hospital system. They are phenomenal and an excellent organization to be involved with. I wish the best for your daughter and your family.

Contractor's Reaction to New Organization
Mathew Johnson replied to Beth n Rod's topic in Business Topics & Tips
I think for what it will cost to invest in this organization at the start up, it is a worthwhile donation. I have heard concerns that the organization will be a vendor based -or vendor sponsored-organization. I have no problem with this. I spoke with the president of the new organization on the phone and he was pretty clear and direct that the reason the cost of membership would be relatively low was because point-blank, the cost of running the organization will be underwritten by the vendor sponsors. If looking at Delco's banner ad or logo on the web site means paying less for membership, I can deal with that. If the vendors want to absorb the cost of educating me about the industry and proper use of the products they sell, great !! Again, the president of the new org was quite upfront about it being a vendor sponsored organization. There were no hidden requirements to membership, for example spending or using any of the vendors to purchase my supplies. The bottom line is this... competition is healthy for the industry. The $97 membership investment is, in my opinion, not a bad deal. In all likelihood, I will attend the first convention just to see for myself what it's all about. -
