  2. I'm running for UAMCC President!!! Ask Questions here

Doug, Thanks for your response. This is an exciting time for the industry and the 9 people who will be charged with moving the org forward. I dont know you personally and I get a sense that you are a straight shooting, no nonsense type guy, as I do with many others on the ballot. What are your thoughts on a seated BOD member speaking positively and publicly about a vendor they use or a BBS that they like and so forth. Do you feel that it is appropriate to have the BOD title in the avatar or signature line when doing so? These questions are generated from history of the industry and how it integrates with organizations over the years.
  3. Thanks Ron, Brian is coming to the 2012 http://pwseminar.comPressure Washing Seminar Also, our distributorship does provide service and repair. We perform warranty work on select brands as well. Matt
  4. I'm running for UAMCC President!!! Ask Questions here

Thanks Ron, I appreciate your response and I think your idea of board calls being open to members and recorded are a great idea. I look forward to hearing the other candidates point of view. Matt
  5. Brian, Check here with the others where they get their insurance from, Just so everyone knows, Brian got a qoute for insurance that was about 600.00 higher than what I pay, I suggested Joe Walters to him and that he might save about 600 bucks. If anyone has lower insurance options, please post them for all of us
  6. I'm running for UAMCC President!!! Ask Questions here

Guy, Mike, Charles, Doug, John O., Ron, Bill, Randy and the other nominees I forgot to list, I have a question for you. Many years ago, Oh 6 or 7 anyway, another industry org took some flack because of BOD members engaged in business other than contract cleaning were sitting on the B0D. At that time there were some BOD members that I believe (and I may be wrong) were selling equipment and /or educational classes. Many thought that something wasnt right with the process and that the were some conflicts of interest. Given the fact that the ***** has loosened their membership requirements (and I for one am glad that they did), we now have the situation where any mix of BOD members could be seated and perception may exist or has the potential to exist that the BOD Lacks transparency. Lets use myself for erxample, I own a distributorship, a contract cleaning company, an educational services DBA, and have a partner that I promote the Pressure Washing Seminar. Under the guidelines, if I am correct, as long as the annual sales of the distributor sales do not exceed that of the contract cleaning company, I (and any other contract cleaner with dual businesses) am eligible for a BOD seat, or any of the Executive seats on the BOD. Could each of you chime in and briefly give your thoughts on this and what you would do as a BOD member to maintain the sense of fairness and transparency as they both would pertain to a BOD Members and the ***** as an organization representing and speaking as our collective voice in the industry while having the potential of distributors in that role. Could you provide us with some insight on how you would prevent this from happening from the BOD seat perspective that you are running for. Thanks for taking the time to respond and I will all of you well with the elections. Best Regards, Matt

  8. What is the most effective way to get jobs?

We have not had good luck in the past with newspaper inserts. Most of our clients are upper middle class and many of them being over 30. A lot of them I find are reading the newpapers online. The retired group of customers even have internet access, The inserts are a one shot deal, if someone doesnt see the paper, it is money wasted. The other issue is the other extreme - what if you got 200 calls for estimates? Ask the paper for references for other business that have done inserts and call them to see the results they get. You can also pick up a paper and stop by the business and a tell them you are in the Pressure Washing Business and you want to speak with them about their insert response you saw in the paper. After you get an anwer, ask them if you can give them a no- obligation proposal for washing the front of their business. 1000.00 payout for a one shot advertising may be a lot for a business just starting out to absorb financially if the return on investment is poor.
  9. hydro tek issues

Russ, I asked him the same thing, he has some broken wires up under the flywheel and he wants a quick fix. He bought the machine right, It was upgraded to a 5.6 gpm pump with the smaller 16 Hp vanguard instead of the 18 or 21 HP I think he is planning on putting the larger engine, He also has some starter issues, give him a call if you can. You may be able to pick him up as a customer, too far south for me Beth, He knows about McHenries, I did tell him about ACR Products, He has talked with them in the past. Hope you had a a wonderful thanksgiving, Were you contacted about an "expert panel" yet? Matt
  10. hydro tek issues

I have repaired similar issues. If the battery was only charging at less than 14 v, the you had suboptimal voltage available for the burner transformer/igniter to fire the burner. Once you get the engine squared away try this. 1) check for continuity on the thermostat, Turn the temperature up and check the wires on the thermostat, you shoud have continuity with the temperature turned up. 2) It likely has a pressure switch if it is a 5.6 gpm, you usually need to generate minimal pressure to activate this - if there is no nozzle on the gun, the pressure switch may not open the circuit. make sure there is a nozzle in and squeeze the trigger checking continuity of the pressure switch - the pressure switch should show continuity with the trigger pulled and no continuity with the machine in bypass mode. If it has a flow switch - do the same test. 3) If both 1 and 2 are fine, check the transformer - we have a tester we use, but you can open the transformer and test it with a test light.... CAUTION - very high voltage - do not get yourself juiced, If the transformer is bad, simply replace it. If the transformer is OK, then check the fuel selonoid - you can slightly loosen the feed into the burner and pull the trigger. Watch your eyes, it may squirt, If it doesnt pump fuel, check the power feed to the selonoid before you replace it, If there is a loose wire and the selonoid isnt getting juice, you will have replaced it for no reason, I hope this helps, Feel free to call if you have any questions... 607-435-5539
  11. PWNA recap by a member

I attended my first PWNA convention in Ohio several years ago, I sat and had breakfast with a gentleman and his wife with a few other contractors. I knew no one at the time, they knew I was a new contractor, and they made me feel welcome. The gentlemen I referenced gave me a lot of tips that really helped grow my business, his name was Daryl Mirza. I think that attending this event and the other round tables that followed were the items that were influential in our business success. The second event I attended was Beth Borregos round table in Maryland, it was excellent. I laugh now as I remember seeing an enclosed trailer set up there, setting the goal that I would have one of those setups someday. Who would have thought? The fact is this; these conventions, conferences, round tables all provide valuable information. More importantly, they motivate us and fire us up for the season. It is a great feeling to be in the same room with 5, 15, 50 or even 150 people who share the same passion and aspirations.

  15. Our newest toy

Got a great deal on this truck....2005 with 6K miles with a full size rail lift gate on the back, We out fitted it with 2 hotwater skid units, a quad stack of hose reels - 2 for high pressure, One for supply hose and one for chem/roof line, We mounted our air compressor on a shelf to power the yamada chemical pumps used for roofs and decks and have 2-250 gallon water tanks, We have found that it trims 20 to 40 minutes off of each project. Best investment to date on equipment, We installed under body boxes for additional storage (not shown in picture). A company in Pennsylvania lettered it for us (located 15 miles from ACR Products). The dealer we bought it from is practically around the corner from ACR Products. The truck has generated a lot of work during the first month of service just off of the decals. PS: If you are in the Easton area, stop in and see Tom and Barberas store. Every time I stop there is grows bigger and bigger... A lot of great equipment in stock.

  19. Telescoping wands

We use Coress Powerwands. Wh have 2 - 24 foot wands, a 32 foot wand and a 48 foor Coress wand that we use with a pitch witch with for steep pitched roof cleaning. They are great pieces of equipment. We made some changes to the pitch witch to make it work more effectively and easier to control on the roof. We removed the tips and replaced them with quick connects to insert tips into. We are able to adapt to low pressure for either our 9 GPM or our 5.6 GPM machines. We also removed the quick connect on the pitch witch and screwed it right onto our corress attachment. Another big change is that we ordered and use a special lightwieght thermoplastic high pressure wand that makes the wand even lighter and easier to control. I hope this helps. Give me a call if you have any further questions - cell 607 435 5539 They work great! Matt Johnson Pressure Washing Services, Inc

  22. Lisa from Princess Powerwashing Hospitalized

I have taken care of a few people recently this sick, on ventilators for weeks with presumed H1N1. The reason some of them are so sick is prior exposures to respiratory toxins (farmer dust, smokers and so forth) They are normally fine in every day life, but have gotten a horrible bacterial pneumonia at the tail end of the H1N1 virus that most healthy undamaged lungs recover from in 7 to 10 days. For the others it is at times taking several weeks to get out of the woods. think about how many times some of us have coughed while spraying stripper or oxalic, or how many times the xjet fog has blown soap and chlorine into our faces with a wind change. We are chipping away at our respiratory system bit by bit. there is a lot to be said for the respirator mask sittin on the dash in the truck while we work. I hope it is a wakeup call for all of us.
  23. Congrats.... they were awsum pics!
  24. Anticipating a loss in sales?

I think I understood that Ken... I dont/cant look at it that detailed. We use a KISS method.... We budget 10 percent for marketing..... and we seem to consistently get the return we are looking for, this year we even improved on our return, simply by increasing our efficiency. For example: We spend 3800.00 on Yellow pages a year (verizon and yellowbook in two different markets... we expect 38000.00 on generated sales 650.00 spent on the post it note newspaper, we looked for 6500.00 in sales. Sometimes the percentage marketing cost for a specific campaign return is 5, 6 or 7 percent, other times is is 11,12, or 13 percent. On a few marketing blunders it has been as high as 60 or 70 percent, and I have even tried some things that generated ZERO Sales. Over all this year with Word of mouth referrals, it looks like we will have spent about 7 percent of gross sales on sales generation (AKA- Marketing). (that 3 percent saved with our budget structure, results in net profit.) If we have a great month, we look at the marketing cost for the month and year to date, comparing it to our gross sales YTD and usually invest part of the surplus and test different marketing avenues. I guess I could break it down to cost per lead, but I am not sure what the benefit would be at this point.
