alternative to bleach on houses
Barry M replied to derekcaldwell's question in Residential Pressure Washing
No it has nothing to do with a tank. I draw from a 5 gallon bucket of mix all the time just like xjetting. You can use a bigger tank if you want to have larger amounts of pre-mixed chems but it's definately not necessary. It's rare to use more than a 5 gallon bucket of housewash on a house unless it's just huge. -
Nice, I like big thick glossy cards but I don't write on mine either. Glad to see you used both sides. I like your logo in the background on the back, is that like an indent or a ghost image?

I don't know you personally but I know a few PM's in my area that have tried to do things on their own. If you calculate the cost of time, equipment, materials, and the overall finished quality your better off to call a professional to do the job. Just my 2 pennies.

alternative to bleach on houses
Barry M replied to derekcaldwell's question in Residential Pressure Washing
Stephen I don't think Ken meant the xjet is useless or that it's NOT to be used on houses, I think his reply was just a generic way of saying that the xjet was probably the reason for the plant damage and was giving an alternative that may help the starter of this thread with his problem. I get mad at these boards sometimes because its so easy to misinterpret what someone is tyring to get across because the words have no feeling. IMO Ken meant nothing bad about the xjet. I know how you feel about your xjet method on houses. If you do a search on this subject you can find some threads where I had some posts that mirror your posts in this thread. I only xjetted houses and defended that method pretty heavily. I didn't understand the DS thing and didn't understand how it could be any faster or better than xjetting. I was mostly mad because all my previous research lead me to be an xjetter and as soon as I got that method down, all this DSing talk got to be a hot subject. The one key that intriqued me was that most all the veterans had DSed back in the day, then tried the xjet on houses, and eventually went back to DSing. So I asked myself why, is there something there I can't see or understand? I pride myself on being open minded so I quit arguing with them, called Bob and he hooked me up for next to nothing, I asked a few questions and gave DSing a try. Now I love it and having done both I can honestly say DSing is much faster and more efficient than xjetting on houses. I too didn't think moving a bucket around and an extra chem hose was a big deal.....until I didn't have to do it anymore. One of my biggest doubts was the DSing method slinging chems further than my xjet, I thought noway. Well with the right nozzle it does, hands down. I am so glad I was open minded to the DSing idea for doing houses, it has cut my time by at least a 1/3 and has made my life easier. IMO this subject is NOT debatable, and to argue it back and forth with someone who hasn't tried both methods is really a waste of time. I think we can at least agree that without having tried DSing, you really don't have a leg to stand on in the debate of which is better or more effecient. The purpose of my post isn't about DSing is better than xjetting, I just wanted to let you know, I understand how you feel because I was once there, that's all. -
alternative to bleach on houses
Barry M replied to derekcaldwell's question in Residential Pressure Washing
Keep it in the tool box because it has it's place but it's overkill on HWes. Derek, Vinyl Siding Institute recommends cleaning vinyl with a mix of bleach, end of story. -
I have the weather channel radar on my phone now. Very helpful when I'm out in the field. In the past I've called the wife and asked her what the radar looks like but not anymore. I love technology.

I do have a tendency to scare off the hen's. :lglolly:

Steve's never had it on his site, you have to call him. I'm not sure he even sells it anymore because I use to get it in the gallon size and he posted awhile back that he's not dealing with small gallon size of anything anymore. It doesn't bother window just keep them wet and rinse like normal. I think it gives the vinyl a nice luster and it definately keeps it cleaner longer.

getting rid of dirt dobber stains
Barry M replied to derekcaldwell's question in Residential Pressure Washing
I think we've established that, any suggestions on removing the stains? -
Musical chairs, limbo, hot potatoe, squirt gun war with the pressure washer....okay I made that one up but the other three my 8 yr old daughter blurted out. Might not fly with a 'boy' b-day party but for my daughters last party I made a big stage with lights and a curtain and we borrowed a karoke machine, man they had a blast.

That's 39 years of pure marketing genius to you pal : )

Why are round tables and classes important to you? Why do you attend them?
Barry M replied to Beth n Rod's topic in Business Topics & Tips
Round Tables....meet people, make friends, exchange biz cards and phone numbers, build relationships that are priceless. Once I meet someone and get to know them I am more comfortable in calling them and asking them questions and advise if need be and it works both ways. The other day I was talking to a friend about the characteristics of brick and he asked me a question that I wasn't sure about and I said "I'll ask and find out." He said "who are you going to ask?" Like the H&R Block commercials, I said "I got people." ; ) -
Ken You posted just before I did but point well taken. I guess the challenge for me would be to come up with a tiered system that I'm happy with and that I feel confident in selling.
-
Daniel Very interesting approch, I see the merit in it. I will add to your theory of going high end in painting and not necessarily PWing. I have noticed that when I don't use the wet wax on a house that the mold and mildew come back within a year, meaning the house needs washed again in that short of time. But with wet wax houses I did two years ago are still free of mold and mildew. Now it's not the same as a year later failing paint job compared to a high end paint job that could last 10 years or more but it does make me wander if a contractor is really doing the customer a favor by offering a lesser PWing service to save a buck intitially.
-
Well since you got your dukes up, here goes nothin ; ) I've looked into a 3 tier system but just can't come up with something I like. I understand customers like choices and that could very well help sell your services. It's a fact that MOST won't choose the 'budget' or lowest tiered service, most will go middle of the road which is also a plus for the contractor. The reason I have a problem with it is that if someone did choose the lower package, I just can't walk away from a house without it looking terrific (wax application, gutters scrubbed clean, and so on). I don't care if I know they bought the budget package but I don't want the neighbors, friends, and family of the customer seeing a half a**ed job and thinking that my service is mediocre. It's not like the customer is going to explain to them that they went with the elcheapo package. Maybe I'm over thinking again Ken but I want to walk away from every house with it looking as good as it can, I think that will reap me profits down the road.
-
I don't charge for the wet wax either, it's included in the housewash. It's pretty cheap and it's a good selling point.
-
Just use your housewash and rinse with low pressure I do it all the time.

What type of vehicle for trailering?
Barry M replied to Under Pressure AZ's question in Residential Pressure Washing
If i could have a do-over I would get a 3/4 ton instead of my 1/2 ton, of course I had the truck before I knew I was going to be a PWer. -
This is a good ole thread, probably the one that had the most impact on me switching from xjet to DSing. It's funny to read my old post from last year on the first page when I didn't have a clue, I was a hardcore xjetter. Not no more, DSing is the bomb.
-
It really does work but it's a crappy connection : )
-
I have a class A cdl with a tanker endorsement. John a truck like that is fine but if your going to ever pull a trailer behind it then it's considered a combination vehicle and I believe you'll need a class A. Also if you haul 1000 gallons or more of liquid you'll need the tanker endorsement. I drove a truck like that with a triaxle trailer hauling heavy equipment to the job sites while I was in utility construction. I did it for 2 years with no cdl, my boss just told me to play stupid if I ever got pulled over, I was young and dumb so I said okay whatever. Finally we had an out of state job to do so he decided I needed to get legal. So he scheduled the test, I studied for the walk around test, used his truck and went and passed it pretty easily. It was only a couple hundred dollars for the test. Now every 2 years I have to get a cdl physical to stay legal and that's it.
