SENT me back in time
Doug Black replied to jeffex11's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
I wouldn't respect him if he agreed to the job with no idea of what he's doing. If he can't even google I wouldn't help him. If he googled and found the "Dr." guy at the grime scene touting cleaning with HF acid then yeah, I'd help him to save his health, but that just isn't the case... But maybe if someone had helped me when I started, I would feel like Charlie. But back then, no one had the internet and it didn't take much to be the most knowledgeable in the area, i.e. no one knew much! There is no excuse today. But if he was a kid who halfway knew what he was doing I'd hire him and teach him chems.... -
I like it because it reminds you of what can happen without maintenance. :D An ounce of prevention...

Percarbonate carpet cleaners...do they pass muster?
Doug Black replied to Beth n Rod's topic in Floor & Carpet Care
It works okay straight with a rug doctor using super hot water but seems to be best used as an adjunct to other cleaners. -
12% sodium hydroxide bleach: Where to get it?
Doug Black replied to cwenbass's question in Residential Pressure Washing
Sodium hydroxide remains only in small amounts as a result of the manufacturing process. -
what kind of sealant would you put on this deck
Doug Black replied to RSuds's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
Based upon the other threads here I think AC should recoat real easy and with minimum prep like TWP does. -
do wood stains stop arsenic
Doug Black replied to Chappy's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
I read a government report that said that pressure cleaning wood can reduce arsenic by up to 90%. I don't know anything about what stains could do though, but I wouldn't think much, unless they fully encapsulate. All wood before 2003 or so has arsenic. -
yes. The message you have entered is too short. Please lengthen your message to at least 5 characters.

What PSI for pre painting outside wall ?
Doug Black replied to diamondbar's question in Residential Pressure Washing
Huh? Read Post Number 3. Prepping in advance for painters get rid of a lot of loose paint saving them a great deal of time so that they only need to edge sand and pick away at larger stronger spots of failure not removable via power washing. The cleaning is very much chemical based, and doesn't need all that much pressure and is similar to a house wash. -

Are oil based and water based stains compatible?
Doug Black replied to PPW1234's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
Failed Cabot like that is not too bad to strip. Semi-Solid is fully opaque.... strange yes?...but such is deck staining... -
What removes nasty rust stains?
Doug Black replied to Jason E's question in Residential Pressure Washing
Just wondering, does it target just the stain or does it whiten all the surrounding concrete too (unless you can contain it)? That's the problem with the others discussed here...- 14 replies

"At Will" or "Right To Work" States
Doug Black replied to Beth n Rod's topic in Business Topics & Tips
I think that ultimately when anything is structured so as to give one party a significant advantage over the other, eventually it becomes a zero sum game. Things need to benefit both parties to succeed. Kind of like the Nash Equilibrium. Of course, companies can have wild success in the short term....and it's hard to define what a long or short time is.. One thing I do feel is that, things get awry when systems run by policymakers who don't understand how things really work, like in Education, blame teachers for non-performance under their crazy paradigm that's doomed to fail. Then the teachers organize to fight them off b/c they need job protection b/c they work for fools but then the fools blame the teachers and stand and point and say "Look there...so teachers are failures how dare they organize".!! I think it's that way in a lot of industries and companies. Ultimately, if workers feel to need to organize something is probably wrong with the company or system itself. -
First off, how are you getting and keeping the chem dissolved?
-
haha yeah. My last neighbor had a huge one built in permanently encased in brick that he did event cooking with. Other than big grills and close by or already working on-site it's pretty much pointless to do this :D

Yep, apply with sprayer, let dwell and power wash off.

finding my way equipment-wise

I use a 26 gallon buffer tank. It's easy to hook up and disconnect. Someone here said they use a fiver. I don't know why you want to haul your pressure washer up stairs?- 26 replies

Well my jeep broke for three days and now I'm behind but I did this job for community service/auction and the lady wants her cedar roof cleaned off 540/Durant area in Raleigh, NC. I have a few pictures, haven't looked at them but the scope is that the cedar is cupped hardcore in at least 10 places on the backside (maybe the front too) and there is an extremely high degree of buildup on them and all over. Also the front is 30% inaccessible unless you are a walker and the back is the same not walker status but ladder setup status. At any rate due to the end of shingle build up you woodies and everyone will have to do a roof walking pressure cleaning after chem app. She will not allow any pruning of landscaping to clean her roof and would not name a dollar amount to clean it. I have a few pictures and will post them here Monday or later if any parties are interested. I no longer bid on roof jobs where people are not serious (as evidenced to me by the not wanting pruning) but gave my word I would ask around and the other company I know doesn't like it so I am posting here. Let me know if you want the other pictures. The upside is she will be wanting them stained. Doug Black Midtown Service Solutions.

finding my way equipment-wise
Doug Black replied to Neil's topic in Tools, Equipment & Basic Maintenance
You can use a small buffer tank without having a skid. Also, a buffer helps to reduce pressure builds on the machine and just generally makes it nicer. Raleigh water pressures are nice for my 5 GPM but outside Raleigh in Wake Forest, Rolesville, and surrounding areas in can be more hit and miss. Even those connnected to the Raleigh stations can have problems with demand side booster situations. Even with my small machine back in the day there were times where I wished I had a buffer tank but it's best to have a belt drive to pull it. If you have questions you have reach me today but tomorrow I'm power washing all the day long....- 26 replies

Well it all depends on what you mean by portable. For me personally, my 275 lb machine is portable and I wheel it all around easily, but it surely is less "portable" than the machine you are talking about. And my friend is unable to push it back onto the trailer due to its weight. 4000psi and 4gpm is about tops for what you are talking about and they weigh around 175. For power washing the smaller machines are great but for pressure washing the larger definitely pays off. Belt Driven Cold Pressure Washers vs Pressure Washer - Cold I mean with a skid versus portable all they do is add or remove wheels... So with am 8GPM machine it's going to be a big boy. I bought a smaller one from Northern Tools in 1996 and it was great but things may have changed over the years.- 26 replies

I just read the reason you are supposed to use non detergent is to reduce water, so I guess the non detergent really is that important... Also you may be using cheap oil. Other than those two things...your power washing pump might be in trouble...? Here's another possibility on that side of things: http://www.thegrimescene.com/forums/residential-pressure-washing/8451-how-fix-pressure-washer-pump-water-pump-oil.html
