Who's Ready
jnoden replied to jeffex11's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
Im as ready as im going to get. I have a new rig and truck and hired 2 FT guys. Managing them while working another FT job is going to be a great challenge. Luckily for me they both have experience and seem to have good common sense. If everything goes ok and I have a good season than I will quit my other job for next season and get another rig going. -
Im thinking I want want of those 4 posts ladder rack frames for my landscape trailer/rig but I can not find any around here or when I do a search online. I dont weld so that is out of the question. Does anyone have any ideas as to what will work for three ladders and not get in the way?

oil based sealers/stains off the skin
jnoden replied to CLASSICPW's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
I dont think there is a way to remove the stain from asphalt without leaving a similar mark there. I have tried with stripper, goof off, hot water, soap and nothing worked for me but if you find something that works well please let us know. As far as removing stain from skin, I know I dont have the best answer but I will tell you what I do. I use soap, hot water and a green scruffy pad. I think I actually remove a layer of skin and that takes it off. -
ready seal on blacktop driveway
jnoden posted a question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
I used canvas but the overspray was bad enough that it coated part of the drive way and when I removed the canvas you could see where it layed because all around where the canvas layed it was dark from the ready seal over spray. I was thinking of using warm water to see if it would even things out a little but I am feeling a little doubtfull about it. Im not sure if I should use chems or not since the blacktop has oils in it. Anyone else have this problem before? -
ready seal on blacktop driveway
jnoden replied to jnoden's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
I do not get it on cars or siding. I use a process that minimizes the risk of this happening. This deck was unusal in that it was built by the home owner over top his garage doors and over the parking area. I layed canvas down but underestimated how far it would travel so I should have covered the whole driveway. I used less masking because the wind was blowing away from the house and towards a field with nothing in between. Live and learn. -
ready seal on blacktop driveway
jnoden replied to jnoden's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
I thought about spraying the rest of the driveway with ready seal. I think the darker color looks better seeing that the driveway is about ready for a recoat anyway. I was thinking about goof off also since that stuff works well on removing it from other substrates but I was also worried about using it on asphalt. has anyone else used goof off on asphalt? I will recoat the driveway if needed but i really want to avoid that if possible. -
ready seal on blacktop driveway
jnoden replied to jnoden's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
yeah thats what I was thinking of doing. Yeah it just made it look a lot darker. I think if I misted the whole driveway with ready seal it would look better than before but I told him i will try washing it. -
Is anyone still using the batch of wood tux that wasnt curing? I have about 25 gallons of it and I am trying to decide if I should use it with the japan dryer or should I get rid of it and buy the revised stuff. If anybody wants it they can have it for $75 per fiver.

I posted this problem a while back and after a few attempts to fix the problem I unfortunately still have the same problem. The pump is a belt driven T series General Pump 5.5gpm 3500psi. It only pulsates and has less pressure when I try to tank feed it or if the water pressure to the inlet is not high. I have replaced all the valves, flushed the pump with the valves out, replaced the inlet filter and use a larger diameter hose to the inlet. I have another machine fed from the same tank with the same exact connections and hose and it runs fine. The one I am having problems with use to pull from a tank just fine. At this point I might be buying a new pump but it is hard for me to spring for a new one seeing that this one is only 2 yrs old. I thought I would post one more time to see if anyone had any other ideas.

I guess it wont hurt taking it apart since it will be junk to me if I dont get it fixed. I like taking things apart and I am good at it :) its just getting it all back together the right way that is usually my concern. Anyway, Ill have a go at it and see what I can come up with. Ill try to take some pics. Thanks for the quick replies fellas.

I decided to use Cabots this year and have a question for those of you who have used it more than a few times. The brochure reads that is is a semi solid and you can achieve semi trans by mixing equal parts of the clear with it. When I called the dealer they said that all their cans are semi trans however I used the red wood yesterday and it looked opaque. It also clogged my deckster sprayer and now I need to figure out how to tear everything apart (including the pump), clean with thinner and put it all back together. I guess my question is, do you mix the clear in yourself? does it then spray well through a shur flo type sprayer? Also I was wondering if anyone has heard about when we will not be able to buy the oil stains due to the new compliance law. Thank you for any responses.

yes it does sound like a low oil level sensor. Check the oil level.

Ive been getting more requests lately to replace boards. I usually only flip them or let them know if any are replaced that they will stick out like a soar thumb for a couple years. I want to buy some boards and let them season (cant find any seasoned boards or kiln dried lumber at lumber places around here). I heard though that during the drying process the boards will warp until the point that they are unusuble. Does anyone know about this?

Man it was hot today! (pics)
jnoden replied to dpaull's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
I have done a few decks like that. That type of deck can be installed in a day since each square is pre fabbed. It is a bit of a pain for us though because it forces you to change directions to stay with the grain when washing and sealing. Good job on the work. -
WTW brown sugar?
jnoden replied to bigchaz's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
I ll see your request for sample pics and raise you one also. I will pay for wood samples/ cards of Wood Tux colors and/or Ready Seal colors. I am looking for samples on ptp. If nobody has any, I may do a bunch myself and make them available for sale. Its just a pain because I would want to get a seasoned board, percarb, brighten and wash, rip the board, split its thickness, plane, cut them to length and stain. drill a small hole at top and link them together so the arent as easily lost. I wonder if people would be interested if I did this and say $10 for each color plus shipping? I know I would pay that if the samples looked good. -
I have been using goof off lately to remove overspray from siding. It works great for removal but today I got a call back. Customer said that some of her vinyl siding is shiny and was wodering what it was and if I would take a look at it. Im thinking that it is from the goof off. It was shiny when I left the place but I thought that it was just slow drying. Anybody else have this experience and know what i should do about it?

Russ you have helped my business tremendously with both quality products, technical advice and correcting any concerns. I look forward to continue the use of wtw and other products. One question I had though is Im not sure if the last shipment I got has the japan drier in it so I bought a bunch of that stuff and have been adding a can to each bucket and it seemed ok to me. Is there any concerns with adding too much Japan dryer?

the unloader is only a couple months old and it is already malfunctioning. When the gun is open it seems ok maybe a small loss of power. the problem is when I let off the trigger gun (closed gun) it pulsates real bad and the hp hose jumps all over the place from repeated build and loss of pressure. If I pinch off the bypass line to my tank it stops. Took it apart and didnt notice any problems. Replaced it with a cheap unloader and that one works fine so I know it is the unloader malfunctioning. Any Ideas?

I would try that if it has been malfunctioning from the beginning but it ran fine for the first couple months. I just ordered a zk1. I heard the k7 has regular problems.

I have applied it with my deckster a few times and I think it applies better with the pressure at150psi or more. It does put it on fairly heavy though and so I am wondering if I need a different tip for my deckster. I like the cone tip I have (think it is a #6 from Sunbrite) but I am wondering if a different size would work better. Is there anybody who sells the cone tips in different sizes?

Since i have a fair amount of time on my hands until spring I figured i would post another question I have been curious about. I always hear about the different types of oils that various sealer companies utilize in their stains. I also hear about the benefits of finely grounded transoxide pigments found in good stains. I never hear anything about the ingredient in a stain that actually seals moisture out. Is it the oil that repels moisture or is there something else? (speaking of oil based stains only). Does every company use the same ingredient/ chemical. Is it found more in some stains than others? If it is just the oil in the stain well than i guess water bourne stains use something else that generally last longer.

These people had their deck built last year. A large 2nd story deck that has vinyl railing but all the wood, steps and even underneath the deck has been coated with Cabot solid white water base. It is already pealing on the surface at a couple places and they really dont want that color. I told them that they can not go back to semi trans but that they could clean it well, remove all loose paint and spot prime followed by two coats of solid tan. Im thinking that maybe the deck wasnt properly prepped before painting it. I gave them a bid but I really dont want the job unless I can rent a paint sprayer for under neath the deck. I do feel bad for the people and they seem deperate to get it looking nice. They know they screwed up. I know most of us would walk away from this kind of job but who would take it? Any suggestions?

solid stain mess
jnoden replied to jnoden's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
I told the customer i would attempt stripping it if it werent that the entire under part of the deck also has the solid stain on it. The stain is in good shape underneath. The deck is 620 sq Ft just on the top plus 24 steps, a landing and all the wood under neath the deck. Im not ambitious enough to strip everything. She did give me the job today. She is deciding if she wants to change colors or jus fix the bad areas. -
I was all ecited to start next week and my employee who I guaranteed 40 hrs a week of pay wether I have the work or not will start next week. Unfortunately we just got dumped on with 6-8 inches and everyone is calling to reschedule. I guess Ill have some interior painting for him to do.

Making the x-jet easier to use
jnoden replied to Freshlook's question in Residential Pressure Washing
15 gal tank on cart with large inflatable wheels works great and no spillage. the hose that comes with the x-jet is not long enough so I bought a 50 ft hose. The 5 gal enclosed pail that sunbrite sells works great for applying wax after the house wash.
