Ok heres one i did this year. New homeowner didnt have any idea what was on there for stain. I had to replace a couple of boards. all came out well and the h/o was estatic with the results. the wood was a soft fir and all beat up. i took out a ton of scratches and gouges.

I wouldn't mind getting an honorable mention.

I agree! As far as 'using their own concoctions' this is a bad idea as you become the manufacturer and bear full responsibility of the damages created by them.
If you don't have a background education in chemistry, training or valid certification, leave the concoctions to the manufacturers who have the insurance and understanding of their products. Otherwise, you leave yourself wide open to a law suit.

With the added bonus that it only costs $88 per gallon. The color selection is very attractive too.You can get a pail of "clear" for $600.

I got a good laugh from this site. One of my customers used it on their deck. It peeled after the first year but they wanted to know if I sold something that would last 50 years as well. Are consumers really this gullible?

Bakers is not 250 VOC compliant from what I understand. Taking TWP's Radcon formula and adding mineral spirits brings it down to 550 level. I could be wrong though.

Rick, what did you use to get it off?A bit difficult to strip, the foul finish comes off in what only can be described as mushy spaghetti. Gets all over you, your help, the house, the landscape. And it is not cheap to remove.
I have seen some really bad BM arborcoats fail after one winter. Looks and acts like a paint.

Excellent work Rick!
Very impressed with the cleaning and removal of the tannin bleed.
-
Spraying, 3-5 hours if you have someone helping with tarps.

Lousy quality control? I know most people on these boards want to marginalize me as a contractor and made irrelevent - but how do you explainaway Celeste and Jim's experience?
Dan-
We get customer complaints on all the stains we sell including TWP. There is not a perfect stain for every environment. When customers call us asking for the "best" stain that we sell we tell them there is not a "best" stain for every scenario. We break it down into geographic location, wood type, age of wood, etc. then offer at least two options.
The products with the least amount of complaints in order are:
1. Armstrong Clark - Never had a homeowner/customer call and complain. Never had an issue locally when we applied. In fact the only issues I have heard are from you, James, Celeste. I am sure others may have had issues but the positive results significantly outweigh any negative.
2. TWP - Never color retention or mold issues. Most are from drying or curing issues related to homeowner not prepping or applying properly.
3. Defy - Yes homeowners love Defy, contractors not so much.
After that the complaints go up significantly depending on the brand.
If you had an issue with a stain then move on and find something different. I tried Ready Seal and didn't care for it. Does not mean it is a "bad" stain as many people have good results. It just did not work for me.
If you are looking for a product that is going to perform 100% perfect every time then you will be disappointed because it does not exist. You cannot control what happens to that deck after you leave over the next 2-3 years.

Congratulations to Greg at Timberseal for winning the Summer 2011 Armstrong Clark Contest!

I slid off a gazebo roof about 15 years and landed on the ladder in the area that hurts the most. I refuse to do them anymore. This was much more time consuming, took much more stain, and was really more of a pain than what I had expected. Not to mention the rood had to be done from up top and I about slid off 3 times!Looks great!

I like that color. "Rustic Mahogany"
