need help to bid a fence
Don M. replied to krpalex's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
If your not careful you can lose your arse on that fence. The first fence I did I thought I could do with 6 gallons of stain. It took 13. Be careful. -

Hey Rob, looks good. Stay on your side of town. :) -
why the heck do you send 2 people to do a 1 man job?!
Don M. replied to Jarrod's question in Residential Pressure Washing
I have a vison of Jarrod eating boiling eggs, his eyes bugging out of his head, and his skin turning green and busting at the seams of his shirt. I know some of you are talking about burnout for the guy that washes the house and strips the deck. I have QUICKLY read all the post and I dont think its been mentioned that Jarrod pays his guys on commisson. That might keep them motivated. -

Securing GRANTS for your business and for Education
Don M. replied to John T's question in The Club House
Listen, contact your local SBA office. I start a class in 2 weeks at a C.C. Its 2 nights a week 3 hours each night for 6 weeks. They will walk you through step by step on a writing a business plan. Once the class is done, they take your plan to the local grant office and run it though them. If all goes well you get a 5 grand grant that you can use for your business, there are limitations on what you can buy, but I do know you can buy equipment. -
I ds'ed my first moldy house today
Don M. replied to Jarrod's question in Residential Pressure Washing
I always rinse the windows, soap up everything, then rinse just the windows again and move on to the other side of the house. I do the same there then come back to the first side and rinse everything again. Jarrod, I know this doesnt fit into your business model, but picture 2 guys washing with 2 5.6 machines. Each guy soaps up their two sides, then they change sides on the rinse. I bet that would be fast. -
I ds'ed my first moldy house today
Don M. replied to Jarrod's question in Residential Pressure Washing
Scott, its other issues besides the chlorine. Besides, 99.9 PWashers use chlorine to clean on the outside. Very few of us do any mold remidation on the inside. -
I'm not sure where to post this, so I will post this here. My wife and I have been debating on pricing for monument cleaning. I went out and cleaned her dad's concrete monument the other day with some house wash mix and a soft bristle brush. It was just your typical vertical monument (about 3' wide and 2' high). Rinsed it off with 15 gallons of water and wiped it down. All in all it took me almost an hour. She says I would not be able to get anything over 25-30 dollars a monument. I think she is crazy. I dont see why I couldnt get at least $50 dollars a monument. Is anyone else doing this right now? Thanks for your help Don M.

Downstreamer Trouble
Don M. replied to We Wash Concrete's topic in Tools, Equipment & Basic Maintenance
Hey Micah, I dont have a hose reel, and my ds was on my machine and was not working. Jarrod told me to put a 6 ft whip hose on it to get it away from the pump and it worked just fine. Hope this helps Don -
HD-80 and lots of Fuzzies
Don M. replied to krpalex's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
I think either two things; 1. The dwell time was too long 2. You had it mixed too strong. The finish you were trying to take off, was it latex or oil? -
With the recent attacks in Iraq, you think the govt will start getting involved with who gets chlorine?

Would you pay for a bookkeeping service that would come to your place of business once a month?
-
So let me take this a set further, I might need a new poll. Would you pay lets say a one time set up charge of 95.00 (this includes getting all you and your vendors set up on quickbooks) and agree to a 2 hour minimum at $55 per hour once a month?

Michael, thanks for speaking in such short notice. I know how you feel about "low margin high volume" work after Friday night :), but I think you are doing the right move looking at wood restoration. Some people may agree or disagree, but my best money was made doing wood restoration projects last year. I dont know if its because its a higher ticket item or what, but I did good doing it. Jarrod will hype you up for sure. I cant wait until the fall to see how he is doing it. I hope I am just 1/2 as fast as him this spring.

Your welcome Tony. It was nice meeting you. Let me know how that Ready Seal you won works out.

Prices on jobs?
Don M. replied to RyanLRS's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
Larry, You converted me to the way you measured last year. Since using your method I feel like I have been right on with judging the amount of stain. I didnt have near the left over once I went your route. Thanks Don -
Marius, I have used a 2.8 gpm for the last two years. Though it got the job done, it took a LONG time. I've got a 5.6 gpm machine coming. My advice is to save and at least get a 5.6.

90% of those kind of jobs has always just left a check under the doormat or something like that.

Check with a local mailing house usually places that do printing will do this. I would say its time to bust a move on Postcards. Depends on your area but I say early spring.

Ken, whats a "QC address" You lost me.
-
Scott, I've ran a ad in a couple of "Neighborhood Magazines". My home address never did get them, while my PO Box did. Makes you think. I know adddressing by hand is VERY timeconsuming, but like you said, if something is addressed by hand, than I think the chances of it being opened go though the roof. Maybe our companies will get to the point that we can have a seperate mailing divison and we can hire people to hand address env. all day long. :)
