  1. Wood Restoration Photo Contest

Thanks Rich. Get on up here....I'm serious. I sent you an email after we talked last don't know if you got it or not. Give me some notice on a visit. I'm on a large job now for probably another week, then i've got a hog hunt in GA and a ski trip to Jackson. Shoot me an email will ya. /neil
  2. Good glove store?

Good morning. I'm looking for a glove for colder weather washing. Anyone have a good source? - PVC / chem proof coated hands, elastic cuff not coated, but resistant - insulated - not bulky - longer than 14" cuff, preferably something that is near elbow length with some elasticity that can keep a PVC jacket sleeve secured. Perhaps something even neoprene with coated hands. I don't like it much when I'm reaching overhead and my jacket pulls out of my glove cuff and nasty runs down the arm. gracias... /neil
  3. Good glove store?

Grainger's service rocks. Was in there yesterday morning and the counter dudes are always so helpful. A pot of hot coffee on doesn't hurt either. The guy yesterday used to do restoration in SanFran with U/V process. Hmmm...never heard of UV stripping. /neil
  4. Why this business

    Jim come hang with me.
  5. Good glove store?

Cold hands makes me ornery. Yesterday was brutal wind......brrrrrrr crunchy. Today was a heat wave. Gloves you just need to have lots of pairs and keep rotating to dry ones. I was the same way when I lived in Wyoming. My fingers and toes sweat big time so I've always fussed with gloves and socks. TMI, I know. I think I have cedar lung tonight....hack, cack, caphlemie...love that cedar, though...$$$. /neil
  6. Good glove store?

Thanks to you all I now have 3 diff pairs coming from 3 diff suppliers. We'll see. I really do appreciate the responses. Velcro cuffs on the pvc jacket really helps. We're stripping polyurathane unders this week. This is one stripper on my face I don't much care for :) /neil
  7. Good glove store?

Thanks for that, Shane! Do you even OWN a pair of insulated gloves?!?
  8. Good morning...I'm curious if anyone has one these portable hose wagons from Rapid Reel and if it's decent quality? Thanks! http://www.apex-unlimited.com/ghgahorewa.html /neil
  9. BIG Ipe project

The shot of the sunlight on the dock looks fantastic! Nice work. Just think, a year will pass before you know it and the fun can happen all over again:) /neil
  10. Rapid Reel Triton Garden Hose Cart

Rapid Reel Triton portable hose cart didn't last me 6 months. :furious: It's been limping for a month and finally bit it for good Friday. Definately a home use only item. I should have known better. /neil
  11. Good morning. Does anyone have any experience finishing Locust? I saw a gorgeous deck the other day and knew I hadn't seen this decking material before. First though was Garapa, beige/yellow and very hard, somewhere between ipe and teak for lb/ft. Turns out to be good ol' local Appalachian Locust. I contacted the distributor/mill and they recommend straight linseed oil rub. I understand Linseed has been used on woods for 100's of years, but can also serve as a nice mold buffet. I'd welcome any experience or opinion on finishing milled locust. Grain pattern is gorgeous. /neil

Three more. G'nighty. Stripped spar varnish all day today. Tuckered out. /neil
  13. Wood Restoration Photo Contest

I don't much want to see this one again for atleast another year;) Finished up yesterday. Tad over 1,600sqft, 5 light days, 2 of us on this particular job. Stripped failing Messmer'sUV that was builder-applied when home was completed in April of this year. HD80 at 2oz/gal, Citralic to neutralize. This one got WoodRich, a light 'buff' with the Osbourne, then a top coat of WoodTux. Looks absolutely chuh....chuh....cherry! I'm anticipating this wet on dry application to rock the casbah. Here are a few pics. /neil
  14. BIG Ipe project

The Graham Crackers strike again! You should have put some kneepads and a brush in Norm's hand on this one? Stunning you guys. Is that IronWoods brand? What's PTW? /neil
  15. Business Plans

Bill, I will try to call you today. /neil
  16. supply-side winterize

I'm covered on running antifreeze through my pump and hose reel and tanks at night, but how best do I keep supply line and reel from freezing up? Air compressor? I've been doing the portable electric heater on low at night. Nothing to say I can't continue doing this. This is a daily deal, not over-winter winterization. Enclosed rig, too. thanks, /neil
  17. shane. i feel your pain, bro. I get real antsy waiting on stripper. You mind clueing me in to what chem wand you use on your shurflo? I'm going through a few too many. Most seem to break off at the hose barb flange on the molded handle. I'm considering a few of these TriggerJet's from Rittenhouse http://www.rittenhouse.ca/asp/product.asp?PG=764 /neil
  18. Wood Restoration Photo Contest

Gorgeous! That's a nice deck design, too. What I wouldn't do for a GROUND level deck right about now. Celeste, do you know what brand of ipe that was...ie. Anvil, IronWood, etc? What pressure/tip did you use, just curious? /neil
  19. Stripping IPE wood

Nice one, Tom. Que un pendejo!...that's my new statement of the week. What an idiot. I'm seeing an epoxy there. I've seen Poxy Coat and Poxy Sealer on Ipe and it weren't purdy. http://www.poxycoat.com/products.asp#poxySeal 6 months and it was a peeling flaking mess. These were sample boards thank God and not a customers investment. Cut your teeth on something a bit more chewable ;) The guy's already picked out his stain....that is HILARIOUS! cheers, /neil
  20. Wood Restoration Photo Contest

I'll know more when I get on it this morning. As hard as ipe is, i'm finding it's peculiarities with showing the slightest of wand marks. Had to touch up a few spots yesterday. 4oz at 20min worked for the intact stuff. Weather service says it gonna be a great day to sling some stain:) /neil "3/4ths redneck"
  21. 5000 square feet of acrylic !

I hear ya, Shane. My employee would argue I need some Frankie Goes To Hollywood....Relax! Another great song...
  22. Wood Restoration Photo Contest

Snapped this yesterday during an ipe strip. HD80 caught in action on some Messmers UV. Matthew, you've probably got your answer already...WoodTux will cure on wood temps down to 40 degrees. Best to call up ESI directly. /neil
  23. 5000 square feet of acrylic !

Ken that's quite the feat there! On a job like that I'd be walking around alot figuring what should happen next. I do that alot. Multiple strippers are tough, to say the least. Always concerned about how each will dry out and finish. For a multiple stripper Q...how do you handle the usual grease drip spots dead center deck? Spot treat with higher dose of SH? I've had those spots finish up lighter than say the rest of the deck using a percarb or lighter SH mix. Cool vid....btw. You're mired up in the 80's! /neil
  24. Wood Restoration Photo Contest

Good lookin', Paul. So what you're saying is you finally fell below $3/sf on this one;) /neil
  25. Wood Restoration Photo Contest

Shane this one measured up 1,650 decking/steps, 550 railing, and 900 vertical supports. This railing was an original design by the carpenter. Top cap was 2x8 cypress lam'd and screwed to a steel inner plate. It's a beefy handrail...measured up to about 30"/LF so a LF factor of about 2.3. later, /neil
