Sap coming from knots
tabbeus posted a question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
I imagine there is something about this somewhere. I searched for "sap" and returned nothing. I did a deck about 3 months ago. The deck was stained last summer but looked horrible and over the deck was about 2 years old. The customers called and said there is sap coming up at the knots all over the deck. What is the best way to handle this? They are going to pay me to fix it because they are having a party this weekend and want it looking pristine. I was just going to put some stuff from Autozone that softens sap on it, pressure wash it off, then recoat the whole base. Is there an easier way? Any reccomended cleaning solutions? Or just a thread link? Thanks Thad -

I recoated it this morning and read your post after I got back. Will Deckscapes peel? I feel like I have done that before and it hasn't peeled but maybe not. Well I hope that is doesn't, but thanks for the advice and for looking out for a fellow PW. Ciao -

The deck doesn't need to be recoated but the clients want the entire base coated again. So yes. I am using oil base.. -
Sap coming from knots

I didn't use anything to clean it, straight water. I stained the deck with Deckscapes Redwood. Today I went and got most of it off with some laquer thinner. I am going to recoat it in a few days. Thanks for the help. -

I want to start a pressure-washing business. Advice?
tabbeus replied to growlydog's question in Residential Pressure Washing
You definitely don't need $5,000 to start up. I started by using a $500 pressure washer from Sam's club, a $300 paint sprayer from Lowe's, and $350 in getting yellow signs made to put on street corners. Given, I did have a truck already and 5 years of experience in highschool and college. That was last summer, and I averaged about a $1000 a week working part time while full time in grad school. If you go out and buy a bunch of expensive equipment you could bury yourself trying to keep up with payments and such. Like some other folks have said, you might want to try it before you jump in too deep. $5,000 is a lot of money to invest in something you have never tried. You have a huge head start with this forum, fantastic knowledge from some seasoned veterans. If you need a hookup for some yellow signs let me know, I have a great contact and it is a great way to start out by advertising effectively and cheap. -

Which Sealer(s) are you using this year?
tabbeus replied to Beth n Rod's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
This is my tenth summer doing this. I have used a great deal of products. I would say that Sikkens is the best product I have used but it is costly. For the majority of the time I have been using Deckscapes (Cuprinol) and I have had great results with it. However, with that said I haven't used many of the products that others seem to use on here. (Readyseal, Woodtux, ect) I am getting Deckscapes for about $16 a gallon and it has been lasting two years. I am totally open to trying something new but everything else looks like it cost quite a bit more. I went to the readyseal website and it looks like it runs $25 a gallon. Do these other products go further per gallon? Do these other product that folks use on here go on much easier than Deckscapes? I'm so used to it I can't imagine anything else. I would love some imput, a new product might give me some excitement in the biz again.
