  1. After reading Ricks post on eht being water based I took a look at a can I have had for a couple of years and never used.Yes it was water based and the ingrediants looked familiar.I looked at a can of wolman raincoat which I also had and the ingrediants read exactly the same. How they are formulated so the eht costs twice as much i dont know ? Maybe the label costs a lot more on the eht can!I m sure wolman will tell you why they are different.Anyway this is not necisarily bad, wolman raincoat actually is cheap, goes on easy once you get the right technique,is easy water cleanup, can go on damp wood, and looks good especially on somewhat weathered wood, It also washes off very easy when recoating. after using it occasionally over the years have found it to actully last as long or longer than anything else except maybe a heavilly tinted product. Just putting this out there for what its worth. frank

  2. Wolman raincoat ,cheap, easy to get ,looks ok especially on older decks, easy to apply and cleanup, can be used on damp wood, lasts about as long as anything 2-3 yrs. and washes off real easy to recoat. doesnt condition the wood like a good oil base, but is a lot better choice than acrylic. I dont use it much i have been using parafin oil products and woodtux. But sometimes think the expensive products dont really last any longer and wonder if the customer really cares about the difference.

  3. With all the new acrylics being sold. What are we going to do when we start running into a lot of decks previously coated with acrylic. Stripping them is a pita and a lot of people wont want to pay. Start using solid on them? I used to use cabot decking stain on old decks that were way over coated. They usually looked dark brown, i would strip the floor and just wash and coat over the rails. Cabot chestnut brown usually matched close enough to cover and blend with the old stain. The decks looked fine and hold up great. It was a way to do a good job reasonably with out totally stripping or going to a solid .The new cabot doesnt cover well enough to do this anymore. The only products that might work now are semi trans acrylics and its like well if i use acrylic this time ill probably just go over it with a solid next time because im not going to want to strip it. Im getting to the point if i cant get it to bare wood or the customer doesnt want to pay, use a solid.

  4. I recieved 2 5s of brown sugar from the sealer store this week and applied it yesterday. It applied well and was only the slightest bit oily today but essentially dried well. This batch didnt seperate but this doesnt seem like the same product as last year, It looks the same and brushes well but definately seems thinner and didnt seem to cover as well as last years woodtux.I didnt get near 200 sq ft per gallon. What do you guys think ? frank

  5. I just came from an estimate with the defective behr. It was over applied and the deck looked almost black. After explaining about the law suit and why i had to strip the failing finish I asked her what type of look did she expect on the deck , she says ' I LIKE THE WAY IT LOOKS NOW'! You just never know. actually that 2 year old behr doesnt look too bad, although i hate their stain. although their solid isnt too bad i think thats is what has the 10 year warranty. flood solid has a 15 year warranty and needs no primer. frank

  6. Rick, to clarify russell said maintenance coat. you say ready seal is a 2 year product at which time it needs to be redone not maintained. although i know it is much quicker to redo and i understand this could be considered maitenance. I think russell means maitenance coats which to me are a light wash and recoat of horizontals , and maybe a touchup of the rails.what he is saying is that at 2 years a lot of positive dry prducts are to worn and patchy looking to maintain, and must be stripped and redone. my opipion is that products like ready seal and bakers twp 500 and 200 series are the best at recoating or maintaining at anytime. where a product like woodtux can be maintained but it takes a little knowledge and finesse, and you have to do it within a window where the product is worn but not to worn. actually ready seal can be maintained at 1 yr as jim does and woodtux probably cant.not taking sides just trying to clarify. frank ,dsp powerwash
