  1. I wont strip paint, not worth the headache. One way to keep out of trouble is if a deck is tough to strip. i dont guarantee the customer that i will get it all off. I explain that the deck is heavily overcoated and that i will use proffesional strength stripper and i will go over the deck twice, at that point if it doesnt all come out. we will need to use something with a heavy tint to blend with the remaining stain, like cabot decking stain. if they want a guarantee then i wont guarantee a price, generally if you scare them that it might require sanding and lots more labor to get every speck of stain off, they will go with the cabot. dont get me wrong i strip a lot of nasty decks successfully, but some of the real real bad ones just arent worth getting stuck on. of course with that acrylic you have no choice to toptally strip, so you better do a good test. frank
  2. Cabot or Readyseal?

A true hvlp sprayer is an air sprayer as opposed to airless., and hv refers to high volume of air not product. these type sprayers produce less overspray than an airless.I dont think calling a deckster type sprayer an hvlp is entirely accurate. I also use an airless to apply woodtux. ive always liked my airless better than my deckster .Russell doesnt recomend an airless because he says it can heat the product causing flashing.Ive never had a problem, how hot does stain get inside the spray hose laying in the sun on a hot day? I cut the woodtux with about 10 % thinner and it is one of the best spraying products ive used with my airless, minimal drift, and multiple light coats soak right in with minimal brushing. frank
  3. Need a little help here

If the finish isnt peeling, the solid will probably stick, iwould give it a good washing and if the old stain doesnt come off put the solid over it worse case a few spots may peel down the road which can be touched up i wouldnt guarantee it and tell him its either this way or strip it completely.cabot water base is good, or flood/ duron solid needs no primer.
  4. Has anybody ever used twp 200 series? The 100 isnt voc compliant in my area anymore, and i tried the 500 series last year but it seems to fade much quicker than the 100 series. The 200 is a parrafin oil based product and was formulated for cedar shake roofs , where i have seen it last for 4-5 years. I have used it on about 6or 8 decks and they look real good, and it only takes one coat even on olds decks. frank
  5. Price

I am sure however people price works for them, but i dont understand not pricing floor and rails seperatly. I can stain 300sf of floor in half an hour under the best situation spraying and probably roll and brush it in an hour., which is equal to 75 to 100 linear ft of rail.which would take much longer to stain and also longer to wash. any more i use sq ft to estimate materials, and just estimate the job by time. you can have two decks the same size and one could take twice as long as thre other. frank
  6. Did you use the voc compliant srd ? i read that the new srd can be applied 1 coat or 3 with the product drying between coats. Any body used it yet ? frank
  7. How do YOU clean..?

if the fence is very gray or has much mold or mildew, i would use hd-80 half cup to 1 gallon , and then oxalic. on newer fences or decks i occasionally use wolman liquid deck and fence cleaner which is an oxalic based cleaner so it is a 1 step process. does anyone else use any type of acidic cleaners to wash in 1 step? zep actually makes a injectable oxalic based cleaner that might not be as good a product in most situations but for a new deck or fence that you just want to make sure is clean and brighten these products can save some time. frank
