How NOT to clean a deck
Jarrod replied to PressurePros's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
Let's be clear, I never bashed anyone for sandblasting a deck. Until now, I've never heard of that process on decks. I DID say that using a rotary nozzle on a DECK was foolish and I stand by that. I never said that anything Jon did was bad. I hope this clears this up! So now the lynch mob can put out their torches and put away the tar & feathers. -
Mine is 24. My favorite character is Jack Bauer. I like him because he gets it done no matter what. Protocol is out the window. I'd like to be him just for one day, just not "that day." - Fans of the show will know what I'm talking about.

So, there are actual pits in the wood? I use TWP too it is good stuff. How long does it take to sand blast a 500 sq ft deck? I walk away from above mentioned decks, so do many other contractors around here. -

Why would you sandblast a deck and how long would it take you to sandblast a 500 sq ft deck with railings and stairs? -

Jon, when you sandblast decks do you have to sand the wood after? -

A little sarcasm never killed anyone. My sarcastic post got erased! Jeeze! Lighten up. We all need a good laugh every once & a while. -

There is only 1 way to properly restore a deck - strip it, brighten it, & stain (seal) it. - Without hot water and roto nozzles. End of story. Any other way would be wrong or substandard. Celest - I wasn't being harsh towards Jon, just the people he mentioned. I edited the post anyways just to be certain not to offend him. -

Wesley - I think I know of the co. you mentioned that uses the surface cleaner and has a long warranty. There was one here this year and they claim to "petrify" the wood so it never needs to be mantained again. They rip people off and screw up every deck that they do. Every deck they did last summer will be grey in summer 06. This company came from Canada originally and went bankrupt because of all the lawsuits. In closing - any "company" using a rotary nozzle to do DECKS with should return their crappy equipment to the garage sale they got it from and go work at Burger King. -
I started out with a hot water unit and I'm soooo glad I did. I thought I would just do fleets. Now, I do decks, fleets, cement, houses, awnings, buildings, brick pavers, bread racks, degreasing, & bla, bla, bla. Spend the extra $$. It's worth it man!!

I thought you said you are doing concrete cleaning too.

Nope. I was for 2 years and got no leads and most people around here dont care if you are or not (it seems.) I think a good portfolio and some good references are better than an expensive plaque. Oh, I almost forgot, you get a couple of stickers too!!!:lgkick:

How about this http://www.amazingmachinery.com/high-volume-hot-pressure-washer-products.html I know it's more than you wanten as far as GPMs but, at this price, who cares? Have you ever washed a deck or house with 8 GPM? With out 8 GPM unit you can strip & brighten a 500 sq ft deck in less than 45 min. You can also wash a 1600 sq ft home in 45 min. TIME IS MONEY!!:lgmoneyey

A lot of the fault is with the customers. If they are dumb enough to hire a lowballer, then let them reap the consequences. Maybe next time they'll think twice b4 doing that again. Sadly, I agree with Mike's point reguarding never getting rid of lowballers. 2 years ago, I had a local "round table" meeting with all of these $99.00 deck clowns. I tried to show them how they were false advertising (in a nice way, of course) and doing sub par work. I also tried to show them how they could be doin' things better & easier. They didn't wanna hear it. There was about 20 of them there - since then, 18 have gone under. I'm still here. The other 2 still rip people off and still SUCK royally. Last year about 15 - 20 more $99.00 clowns started screwing up everyone's decks. That's ok with me, 1 year from now all of their "victims" will be calling me. I'm done with trying to help or get rid of these clowns. Now when I see one of them I laugh at them, after all, thats what we do when we see a clown - we laugh!

I was thinking the same thing.

That's great news! Thank God!

I currently use the double glove idea too. I was hoping for a "miracle glove."

Thanx for the heads up! -
I just called them and they said this is not for pressure wash hose. They said it won't hold. A better tool would be a Bandit Jr. Used one for 4 years now, never failed yet -knock, knock.
