What's On My Deck ?? A mystery for you to solve
yazbird8 replied to PressurePros's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
I read in a recent thread here that wood is being treated with parrafin at the manufacturing end...Is it possible that this black stuff is underneath a coat of parrafin?......... Stephen Andrews Power Washing -
Dark Cabots
yazbird8 replied to jbruno's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
My attitude is that the customer is always (usually) right...lol........If a customer wants a re-application of a solid stain and the deck is in pretty good shape then a re-application is what they will get...Otherwise I will advise them of other options....I would never advise to strip a sound surface for the sake of stripping though......I would also have to double (at least) the price to the customer and that just wouldn't seem ethical to me, not to mention, I may not get thier business.........Case in point: Last year I stained a very large deck with a Cabots solid color stain...It was a two-toned look with the deck and handrails a light creamy brown and the spindles white....The customer loved the end result and recommended me to their next door neighbor this year......It is a very large Mahogany deck which has a Penofin finish on it..........Had I of gone against the customers wishes and advised a very expensive strip, I may not have gotten the job............And the recommendation to this years customer would not have been given........I prefer to be flexible with a customer when the situation calls for it....There is no place for stubbornness when it comes to my clients......... Dark Cabots
yazbird8 replied to jbruno's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
Why would anyone want to strip a solid colored stain if the deck is getting another coat of solid stain?....I would have cleaned the deck, spot primed, and simply reapplied with more stain....If the new color was to be much lighter then I would have simply gone with two coats......I do not see the need to strip a deck unless the customer was going to go with the natural look.........In that case, I would have turned down the work.......Stripping for the sake of stripping makes no sense to me...............Am I missing something here fellas?...........Shoot, yesterday I finished a job that called for a semi transparent (Sherwin Williams Deckscapes acrylic latex) stain over a previously stained finish....It was also SW and it was oil......There were multiple coats on the deck....The screened in deck was nearly pristine and the adjacent (exposed) deck was in bad shape with loads of splinters.....They both came out beaufilully....And that was a semi-trans.............A solid would have looked even better...................Again, why all the stripping?....... So if we're taking about stains, then "clear junk" would be a two word redundant oxymoron............How about CLUNK as a redundant oxymoronic acronym?..........lol Stephen Andrews Power Washing -
I got called back to wipe off a miniscule bit of dried soap from a house wash....No problem.....A quick swipe with a damp cloth.........While I was there she has me picking pink petals from an apple blossom tree off the house because she couldn't reach them..I was glad to help.....Her husband showed up and rolled his eyes and smiled at me......."She's like this every day"............ WTW tips
yazbird8 replied to bigchaz's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
I do not use WTW so I am nothing more then an interested observer...My only take is that Russell should be an active (very) player in this thread....Seems to me he owes it to you all who use WTW to give an explanation/clarification.... Best stain for Redwood
yazbird8 replied to yazbird8's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
There are a couple boards on the deck that are being replaced due to rot at the ends...My guess is the deck is a pretty old one...The owners are retirement age and have probably lived there for 30-40 years...I want to put Medium Red on this baby and I have none in stock (only Light Brown)....I might as well just go with the RO on it.....Owner is paying for materials anyway............ Black deck (Mahogany with Penofin)
yazbird8 replied to yazbird8's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
Is Penofin considered a penetrant or a film former?....My guess is a penetrant.....The deck showed no signs of chipping or cracking..It gets direct sun all day.....The verticals (lattice only, the rails are white vinyl) on one side are in good shape and the lattice is almost perfect as you go around the corner. It's completely out of the sun and it looks nearly brand new with a nice sheen to it.....The customer said that the deck when newly finished looks like the deck of a boat...I think the best thing to do is go and do the bleach test as Jim suggests and while I'm there try a strip test if needed............If it's what Jim suggests then I can save the customer a lot of money and still make a G for the day...... Wolmans Extreme Removal
yazbird8 posted a question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
I cannot remove this stuff from a customers deck..It is 3 years old and in great condition on the verticals but is wearing and cracking on the horizontals....I tried HD-80 full strenght and let dwell for 45 minutes and nothing happened...The customer is desperate to get this off and will replace the decking if I can't help them....I need something that is garuanteed to remove it......This "Extreme" is one tuff sealer...... Best stain for Redwood
yazbird8 replied to yazbird8's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
Thank you Beth...I love visuals...Tomorrow I will take some pics of the deck..I will post them here (if I remember)..lol......I want your take on the proper type and color of WT to use.......Wouldn't WTW draw the tannins to the surface and make the Redwood to dark?............... Best stain for Redwood
yazbird8 replied to yazbird8's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
Thanks Sane.....I guess Redwood decks are a rarity in the east..My customer couldn't get replacement boards when he did a repair a few years ago and put down a ptp board to replace an old one...I'm suprised no one has much experience with it here in the east...I want to do a super job with this deck....This fella belongs to an elite country club up here and I want my name to get around.....I'll do a test with RS before I procede..Hopefully RS won't darken it...The RS blend made for Redwwod seems like a possible PITA...I'm concerned about Lapping, and an uneven finish........ Need to strip my decks - advice please!!!
yazbird8 replied to mas3372's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
Rick, Speaking of brighteners on woods, I have a strip and seal on a fairly large Redwood deck coming up...I did a test strip and citrolic brightening on a run of board on the customers deck....It looked beautiful....My question is, Do you think Readyseal light brown will look good on it? I also understand that it may end up darkening the wood too much because of the tannins in the wood... Stephen Andrews Power Washing Home & Property Care & Maintenance
