  1. Man, I've been getting some weird calls lately. This guy has a composite deck with some kind of porch paint on it, why? -I don't know. However, he wants me to strip it off and put on a new sealer. I think that I am going to use FloodPro solid color finish, simply to make sure that I create an even finish. My question is; should I still strip with HD-80 and neutralize with Citralic or are those products too harsh on composite? I don't know, I've never done a composite deck before. I am going to go do a test patch this afternoon. Let me know what you guys think or have done in the past.

    Thanks,

  2. Hello all,

Mainly all we do is flatwork, wood restoration, etc. We've never done a housewash, other than me just washing my house. I got a call the other day from a guy with a tan aluminum siding house. I haven't gone and looked at it yet, but from the horror stories I have read here, I don't think that I should. Mistakingly, I told him on the phone that "Yeah, we do that" and that was a dumb thing to do. We are also going to do his deck, and I don't want to lose the job, so what should I do? Should I attempt to wash the aluminum siding on this guy's house and if I do that, what are some things to avoid to not mess up this house, or should I just tell him that we can't do it.

    Thanks,

  3. Jarrod,

I know you don't know me, but this sounds fantastic, it sounds like the answers to my questions all in one place. So, pending the price, my partner and I will definitely try to make it. It makes it easier because I work at Comair at night and get free airfare! So let us know what the ballpark cost will be and we'll go from there.

    Thanks!

  4. Hello all,

I had a call today to clean and seal the wooden floor boards on a pull-behind trailer. The guy uses it to transport 4-wheelers, etc. I use mainly ready seal and WTW, but I was wondering if there is something else that maybe I should use to seal it. What does everyone else use for this kind of project or does anyone do this kind of project?

    Thanks in advance.

  5. I think that some of the knowledge out there about Flood products is very dated. Flood was recently bought by Sikens and that is a quality brand. Flood is on the rise as far as sealer technology and quality. Yes, Flood CWF was and is a product that is extremely hard to strip and deal with. However, Flood CWF-UV5 is a good product and is not difficult to strip. I offer FloodPro products as well as RS and sometimes WTW. If someone wants a solid or a semi-transparent, I will use Flood. I'm not criticizing anyone about their opinions, I just feel that some new things are going on and some feelings and knowledge needs to be updated.

  6. Hello all,

I've only been in business about 1 1/2 years now, but I feel that I have very well educated myself. I have read countless posts, gotten certified in wood restoration by the pwna, and have saturated my mind with knowledge. I have two main competitors that have been in business for many years now.

I recently bid a large deck that both of them had bid as well. The homeowner told me that my price was double that of the other two. I calmly explained to him why; that we completely strip off the old sealer (I guess the other two weren't going to do that), use contractor-grade products, set up maintenance schedules, and care more about quality than quantity. I guess I must have said something right because I got a call from him this morning telling me that I won the contract.

So, I guess what I'm trying to say is that you have to stick to your prices, if you know what you are talking about, use better products and produce fantastic results, then you are worth your weight in gold to these homeowners.

I want to thank everyone for this board, because I would not be where I am today without it.

    Thanks again,

  7. What the heck, I'll post something. I'm really proud of this piece of work because it was the first deck I ever did. I stripped a failing sealer off with HD-80, then brightened with Citralic, then sealed with Dark Brown ReadySeal. I could've never done it without the help of this forum. I probably am not going to win, but I'll post anyways. Here are a couple of before and afters.

  8. Yeah man,

I just got my Decker 5'er and I love it. I got it from Tom Vogel at ACR and he is a wealth of information. I chose the Decker over the Deckster because it is black powder coated, came with a better wand, and Tom really stands behind his products and if you have any questions at all, just call him up and ask, no problem. ACR's website is www.acrproducts.com

    by the way.

  9. Hello all,

I am sealing my first deck tomorrow with dark brown ReadySeal and I just have a few last minute questions. First, I heard that it will take two coats, so how long after the first coat is down can I apply the second coat? Second, does everyone spray the spindles, and if so how do you keep overspray to a minimum? I am using a Decker 5'er by the way. Also, what PSI should I spray it with using the Decker? I think that is about it. This first deck has been an adventure. I had to strip Wolman's F&P off of it and brighten it, but it has turned out great. Here's a couple of before pics.

    Thanks,

  10. I feel like I keep asking dumb questions, but I'll never learn if I don't ask. When you go out and do a test patch to determine if it can be stripped, how do you do it? Do you guys just put some in a spray bottle and put it on, allow it to dwell, and hose it off? Or do I need to scrub it in and pressure wash it off? I know I need to choose an inconspicuous area, but beyond that I don't really know. I am going to test HD-80 and EFC-38 to see which one I can use to strip Wolman's F&P. I appreciate any responses, even though this is a dumb question.

    Thanks,

  11. Hello all,

I have what seems to be a simple question, but I have yet to find a suitable answer. I am new to deck cleaning and sealing, but I have a deck to do soon that has Wolman's F&P on it. I am going to use HD-80 to strip, but that got me thinking. After I spray off the HD-80, where is it going to go and will it affect grass, etc? Is there a way to recapture the spray-off so that it doesn't run off into the grass, landscaping, etc? How do you guys do it?

Thanks for the replies in advance.
