New KDAT SYP porch - Need help with stain choice.

Hi

I just had a new Kiln Dried after Treatment - Southern Yellow Pine porch built. The floor was poorly done with Cabot Aust. TO jarrah brown.

The remainder of the screened porch and stairs/landing needs to be stained. Moisture content ranges from 5 to 10% using my tester. I am trying to decide between Armstrong Clark and TWP. We like the semi-trans amber of the AC. We have not get received samples of the TWP. We want a stain that will prevent wood rot/mold and give us some UV protection. I don't want to have to stain every year or two if possible. We live in Chicago and the largest portion of the porch and stairs faces west. I would guess about 1/2 sun due to garage blocking porch.

Here are my questions

1. TPW or Armstrong? What has been the experience of each?

2. Semi-Trans or Semi-Solid (armstrong clark)

3. There is a wood frame (yet to be stained) that absorbs moisture like a towel due pooling during a rain. Should that be treated in some other way?

4. What can I do about the Cabot Australian Timber Oil - or do I need to wait till it wears. I would rather not strip.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated

I also need a reputable company to do the staining of the porch. I will handle the prep.

We use Armstrong Clark and TWP, both are good stains. You will need to strip any old stain off before applying either of those stains.

I cant speak for other companies but I usually hesitate to do staining over someone elses prep. It can be harder to say for certain how the stain will perform if the prep was done by someone else so you may run into that.

For good penetrating oil stains 2 year maintenance is pretty standard as well
