RPetry replied to bigchaz's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
Hah! Good for my little 2nd wood minx and the best distributor in the US. That accent gets this old blood a' boiling! Still, we are a paraffinic oil contractor. I'll wait, seen too much for too many years.- 224 replies

Is This A Deck I Should Pass Up?
RPetry replied to FLORIN's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
Jarrod, Why? Some of us do true restorations, not just easy jobs. They can pay well, but you certainly earn it. Florin may get 7 to 8K for the job. Meanwhile saving the customer 2 or 3 times as much as knocking it down and rebuilding. -

Charlie, Go to a good local paint store and purchase, I think they call 'em paint strainers. Anyway, it is a fine mesh fabric with an elastic perimeter band, fitted for 5 gal. containers. Inexpensive.- 224 replies

Clean it well. Sodium percarbonate and/or 3% bleach and a touch of soap. Brighten /neutralize with citric or oxalic acid. Allow to dry. Apply as much paraffinic oil stain as the cedar will take. At least two apps.

Geeze vBulletin, #*BIT#CH* is not one of the 7 dirty words! Well maybe, but that was the '70's or could be '80's. George Carlin broke that rule. Grow up.

Adrian, This is fun, except for Beth. Best meal I ever ate was fresh elk liver with wild rice. Hate: Complainers, people who ***** and moan through life. Love: People that are truly nice by nature.

Diamond Jim, Thanks to you and Tony Szabo. So what about these shakes? -
Solid nightmare of the week.
RPetry replied to RPetry's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
What a lot of work. Verticals done in Cabot solid oil, Nantucket something. Stuff is like paint. Horizontal beat up PT done in Ready Seal medium red. Wood took a veritable ton of stain. Saved another one from the demo man for a few years. -

Three cleanings. First plain water to get the garbage off the Trex and especially the cracks between the swelled Trex deck boards. Hate to call 'em boards, half plastic. 2nd cleaning done with Restore sodium percarbonate wood cleaner. Did fine, but not enough. 3rd cleaning with knocked down chlorine bleach to 3%, a touch of soap, and a bit of pressure. Foul stains on the balustrade stripped with ACR760 with ACR 633ADD booster, citric brightened and sanded. Kid is staining the cedar by hand now. Trex is not that bad, just grunt work. My helper loves it! -
What do You Think

Daniel, What Jason said. PLUS. That wood is just dying for more stain. -

Scott Paul, What is kind of amazing that both you and Steve James are distributing the same products. The head honcho of A-C is named Jake Clark, another one with a first name for a last name!- 224 replies

RPetry replied to bigchaz's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
Seems that Michigan is the hotbed of Armstrong-Clark outside of Calif. The principal of The Sealer Store is Scott Paul. A big welcome to TGS to another A-C distributor, Steve James of The Stain Shop. Does anyone in Michigan have last names that are not first names?- 224 replies

Little jobs
RPetry replied to RPetry's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
Thanks Beth & Mark. This is a wonderful customer. He also has a little red mahogany deck in the back that we restored last year. No balustrade with 2 steps. We have 2 monster deck jobs coming up, in late July and mid August. They will take near forever to get done. I just like the change of pace of little jobs. -

Scott, Congrats to you and The Sealer Store. Armstrong-Clark stains should become a big seller over time when teamed up with the excellent customer service your company provides. A very good match.- 224 replies

It is good to have a plan, especially when doing something presumably new. This is fine if there is no existing stain on the redwood. Otherwise, you will need an exterior wood stripper. If not using a powerwasher, scrub the wood after applying the percarb, then hose off. Never a need to powerwash a brightener/neutralizer. But for most oil stains, rinse the oxalic off the wood very well. Not sure what AX98 means, we use citric acid. Very good idea, unless using questionable, gee wiz stain products. Oil based is good. There are very good VOC compliant exterior wood oil based stains available. No, you only need dry wood for step 4, staining. I cannot believe the Cabot's "tip" is for wood moisture. Our business is in NJ and we tend to get rain also. Use common sense. Humidity, temperature, and sun exposure all all factors. In general, for most woods, 2 days without precipitation should be fine. If you want a terrific redwood deck to look like a pressure treated picnic table, shame. The 7400 series is what Cabot's calls "semi-solid". In reality, it looks like thin paint. Redwood here on the East coast is quite rare. It is a beautiful wood. Let it shine. Think oil semi-transparent. Think Ready Seal, Armstrong-Clark, Extreme Solutions stains. All are available on the web, use Google. Just don't "paint" it!

Vapor, That is for select clear. For some odd reason, the past 2 yrs. have been unable to purchase knotty WRC in my area. Special order only. The quality has been very good so far.
