You have a slight hint of red in your deck now, but if you want to go closer to cedar brown you could go with 4 gallons cedar semi to 1 gallon rustic brown. I've never done that mix before but we have done half and half Rustic Brown and Cedar Semi and it is much darker than I think you want (see pictures). So go easy on the brown

Your deck now looks pretty similar to Armstrong Cedar Semi as it sits now. Yours has a good bit of orange tone to it. The cedar is probably a lot closer than you would think. Although honestly every deck is different and will take on slightly different shades. For example:

See if you can get a picture up of the spots. Normally spots underneath stain are the darker ones where it wasn't fully neutralized but you have the opposite problem. I would rebrighten to be safe though now that all the wood is clear. Sent from my DROID BIONIC using Tapatalk 2

Did you sand the entire deck or just spot sand?

You need a pest guy for the ants or they will just come back. You also need to lift up all the sunken pavers and add sand/re compact the base before reinstalling the sunk pavers. Then you can clean the pavers and sweep new sands into the joints. Sent from my DROID BIONIC using Tapatalk 2

Yea you can't get most good stains anywhere in CALI, but Armstrong is one of the lowest VOC oil stains so you can still get it in most of California, those counties must have different laws than the rest of the state

IF you are going to keep doing that type of work you simply need to switch to a professional grade stain. There's really nothing more conveniant than the stain showing up on your doorstep from UPS, I never understand people who refuse to order things online. Get your paint at the paint store and get your stain from a stain company or stain retailer like Scott at the SealerStore. You'll be happy you did

Jeremy, I would go ahead and strip the deck like you mentioned. It looks like the stain came off well with the Sherwin William stripper, I would test to see if the RAD will be strong enough to strip the rails. Wash the deck well and apply your brightener again. TWP is an oil based stain you wouldn't need to sand it off, a good stripper will do the trick for you. I have limited experience with the TWP 1500 series (no need to use it here in NC), but because of the lower VOCs it seems likely that application is a bit trickier with flash drying and runs. I've never heard of wiping off stain from a pressure treated deck, pine is a soft wood. You are in TN, should be able to get the better stuff still, if you do want to use TWP go with one of their other series 100 series, 200 series or some other oil based stains that you can order and are better penetrating and may be more friendly to work with. Stain on the siding no big deal, that will clean off easily with some mineral spirits or simple green and a rag or a mr clean eraser if it is vinyl siding.

Always nice to see a stained fence, I have a hard time making much money doing them here compared to decks. I guess the increased size of the ones you see in Texas really helps out a bit with that. It would want to order stain in 55 gallon drums for fence jobs like that!

That's a pretty pretentious statement. One contractors misuse of another product doesn't make yours the end all be all for rust removal.

Hi Gary, you can mix any of the Armstrong colors together quite well, it gives it a really nice look. Wife is usually boss on colors so don't get in too much of a fight! I'm with you though, we prefer the semi transparents as the semi-solids are very opaque and hide much of the wood grain. Here is a picture of a mix between two parts Cedar Semi Transparent and one part Sierra Redwood Semi Transparent: I think you could go half and half to give it a little more red color.

I'll play along....I don't really measure my time that specifically but here is with 3 man crew. Usually me on the phone and 2 guys working so however you want to calculate that. I guess man hours is double or triple depending if I'm actually doing something I apply chems with a roof pump mounted on trailer so we roll up and no setup 1) Clean ~ 1.5 hours: Pull up, 1 guy hooks up water and mixes stripper, 1 guy move furinutre: 10 minutes Apply chems/soak: 20 minute Wash: 45 minutes (one guy is getting acid ready now) Apply acid/Rinse off/clean sprayer: 15 minutes Set nails/sand floor/rails/tighten loose boards: ~1.5 hours (worst part of that is unloading the dang floor buffer weighs like 100 pounds) Hand stain two coats: ~2 hours Total time ~5 hours Deck Price: ~$884.00 You probably already know this but looking at your time it seems like the washing side of things is taking you a while. I assume you are having to load and unload out of truck or van? If you get a rig hookup with hosereels it cuts down so much time. Everything stays in one spot you just pull and roll hoses. Also upgraded to 5.5gpm machines and the wash time went way down too. However if I worked solo I imagine my time would be more like yours. I would spray if it was just me but now with a crew we just hand do almost everything now, no plastic or cleanup to worry about. 2 hours seems like a long time to spray that size deck.
