  1. I stripped a deck and staining it today homeowner noticed pieces of stuff all along the windows on the back of the house I've tried washing with windex and invisible glass but it won't come off Looks almost like it might be miniscule pieces of old stain or maybe wood fibers. I've never had this problem before so I'm worried maybe I etched the windows? I'd like to give it one more go myself before hiring a window company since the homeowner isn't too happy Whats the best way to try and clean these off?
  2. I can't remember if I posted these pictures before, but wanted to get something other than negativity going here on TGS. This was a deck that had 3 or 4 coats of Penofin by another contractor and had turned almost black. Customer assumed that was normal and had all but forgotten how beautiful it looked until I sent here some photos of other Ipe decks we had restored. We stripped, buffed and used Armstrong Clark Mahogany. We use a couple different stains but the Armstrong Mahogany is by far the best finish for Ipe in my opinion. I personally love the reds on Ipe, some prefer a lighter tone though. Deck was very dry so color lightened up a hair more on the outside deck than the covered portion. The last picture was after it dried and got rained on...holds the water off really well.
  3. I have no idea what you're talking about but here is the label on mine. Doesn't say any specific use. Sent from my DROID BIONIC using Tapatalk 2
  4. Winter Wood

Howd you keep the stain out of the water? I'd be worried about dripping and runs that always happen
  5. With the really deep reds its really hard to get that haze of tint out, almost like a dye of some sort
  6. I will say a benefit to the metal ones is you can reuse the lids, with the plastic buckets it seems like the bucket warps and the lid never snaps on tight enough. Can turn a previously opened metal bucket upside down or drop it off the truck (has happened) and stain doesn't leak. Sent from my DROID BIONIC using Tapatalk 2
  7. Normally we brush it out as it drips on the floor and then do two coats on the floor so it blends out any areas under the rail that got more stain. Sent from my DROID BIONIC using Tapatalk 2
  8. We spray lattice and fences that's about it. I don't care to mess with the overspray and now that Im doing the employee thing I'd rather not have to worry about them spraying and not being as cautious as I am. So we brush, everyone is pretty quick at it. You get a rhythm going and use 4 and 6 inch brushes can knock out a lot of wold. I appreciate the kind words John, I dont think hand staining versus spraying makes the work any better, but it is a strong sales tool for me. A lot of customers have bad experiences with spraying so it has a stigma to it. Sent from my DROID BIONIC using Tapatalk 2

  10. Unusual Powerwashing estimate today.

Some cities cracked down on this so be careful. Im assuming it is probably form of bandit advertising for a new restaurant or bar Sent from my DROID BIONIC using Tapatalk 2
  11. This thread motivated me to start doing my own deck...I moved in November and couldn't ignore it anymore haha Sent from my DROID BIONIC using Tapatalk 2
  12. If you are not restaining the house then you are just cleaning or washing it. Unless its the whole works then I would call it restoration Sent from my DROID BIONIC using Tapatalk 2
  13. Hahaha thats wild...he probably did it to spite his wife. Cant say I've ever done one like that Sent from my DROID BIONIC using Tapatalk 2
  14. I dont do houses, but I hate putting gray on a deck. Feels wrong to me. It holds up really well though, seems to be a good pigment in gray stain. I just never think it looks right, especially a semi trans when you have bright clean yellow pine to cover over
  15. Definitely just put new pickets on, there are not that many of them. Then you can strip/sand the remaining rail lumbers
  16. Hows the arm doing Adrian? You been able to wash much this year?
  17. Some Sherwin Williams carry it, by us some stores are run more independently so they order it on their own Sent from my DROID BIONIC using Tapatalk 2
  18. Getting Ready For Spring

I don't really do any advertising any more these days, lot of internet and word of mouth leads. Just waiting for warmer weather and we've already got a month worth of decks waiting in the queue. Some people don't realize you can't stain in the winter so they call through january and february and they get booked for March or April. This year is colder than last I was invoicing end of February last year. Still too cold this year
  19. And as you know, my words have been that I don't care much for you John but that is not an official position of the ***** (not yet anyway HAHA!). John, I find it is important to keep in mind that we are all contractors with our own opinions and views. We were all voted in to the Board individually and we all bring unique experiences and beliefs to our positions. And serving as part of a board doesn't mean you surrender all your own personal beliefs. But when we come together for a BOD meeting we discuss, debate, share opinions and even sometimes yell or get angry with each other. If anyone out there is looking for an organization run by like minded robots I regret to say ***** is not that. However we vote as a board and that is what determines things. In fact even Ron gets upset and sometimes disagrees with BOD decision. He cant even vote and sometimes cant debate but we work through those things. So if at one point in one post on one BBS, one of the BOD members, or volunteers, or members shares an opinion or viewpoint it certainly is not logical to clasp onto 6 or 7 words and let that be your version of Custers last stand if you will, in your battle against the entire movement of an organization. I would never do that to you John, and im sure you've said a lot of things in your lifetime online. As we move forward I have no doubt there will be actions the board suggests that I dont agree with, that I dont like or that I may say something about. But when a vote is taken and a decision is made, that will be the action the org will take, even if I don't agree John. That meshing of ideas and differences is what helps to make us stronger John. That is why I have even asked you and others to come join us. Not because we see eye to eye (in fact I disagree with most of what you say) but because the current ***** is not about one man or one opinion, but it is an effort to be the best and most effective voice for an industry that is fractured, broken, and at times even selfish and immature. But we will only get better and the invitation is there for anyone (even you john) to put aside these petty threads and help make a difference. Visit *****.org or ask Guy or me or others about it. 20. Hi John, If you don't know who authored the original email maybe it's not appropriate to speculate. In the middle schools they call that "gossip". I think you are better than that, and could instead try to set an example for the youngsters like me. Just a thought, thanks John Sent from my DROID BIONIC using Tapatalk 2
  21. Hi John, as you should be fully aware, any actions or official positions on behalf of the organization would come in the form of a BOD vote. If the board adopts a position on the items you are concerned about, that will be presented in the minutes. In the meanwhile, are there any other "continuously hard working contractors' you would like to discredit? Sent from my DROID BIONIC using Tapatalk 2
