  1. Any cigar aficionados?

I like the Cohiba's, but have settled lately for CAO's, a tropical blend with rum. I enjoy the aroma and taste. I have a few a month, but would really like to get a few more COHIBA's, non existant here in the St. Louis area, even black market doesn't have them. reed
  2. When and where do you vacation?

We did our week in June in the Smokey Mountains. Had a great time even though Cathy sprained her ankle 20 minutes after getting there. Turned out the ankle was broken and just got out of her cast. Rode the Harley all through the Mountain roads. Did the Tail of the Dragon, 318 curves in 11 miles. reed
  3. Rick, Well done. Be sure to keep those three photos for you album and to show future clients. GREAT RESULT reed
  4. That's wrong, just down right wrong. Get that deck builders name and EDUCATE HIM QUICKLY. No reason for stuff like that. reed
  5. The shiney spots will reduce over time. I had the same thing happen. What I contributed it to was several factors. One, if applied in direct sunlight it will flash and any stain applied over the flash area with shine (over application). Two, the deck was hot in temperature creating the flash. The new formula of deck stain should alleviate this. reed
  6. Used it on cedar. The bright cedar color is awesome. I got a 5'ver of leather wood and will be using it next week. Can't wait to see it. Bright cedar looks just like a natural new cedar board. reed
  7. Mark, in Arizona and I, got with Todd and Brent and their chemist. We had complaints about the old deck formula flash drying. They have incresed the amount of parafinic oil slightly and this should help decrease the flash. I am getting a sample today, hopefully to try. I used the old formula on my deck, great color, but you could over apply-better to spray than pad-did show lap marks. Mark, has had the opportunity to work first hand with WD and he says they have fixed this. We will see. The bright cedar color is just plain awesome. Will let you know how it works out. reed
  8. This type of stain you may want to use HD80 with the boost. F18 mixed at full strength, 64 ouces + in a 5gl, may work but HD80 boosted should do.
  9. jnoden, you are going to have to experiment with the ratio, start out with at least 40 ounces in a 5 gallon. Being that the CWF is only a year old the bond is still intact, so dwell time will be at least 20 to 30 minutes. You can expect major fuzzies so be prepared to do some defurring. I removed 3 coats of CWF on a deck last year and had to go up to 64 ounces to remove it. It can be done, but remember, chemicals clean/strip, water rinses. Let the chems work and you can get this done. Also, when you order Wood Defender, ask for the new formulation on Wood Defender Deck stain. This new formulation ws just done in the last 2 weeks. So ask for it specifically. reed
  10. This is in regards to the thread http://www.thegrimescene.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2116 . Just recv'd a call from the homeowner. We have justice. The deckbuilder has finally come to his senses and will be replacing 24 floor boards, 1 band board, 8 posts. This has been going on for a year now and it will soon be over. I did tell the homeowner to make certain the builder didn't just dump the wood on his drive way and leave it exposed as he did last year. He left it exposed for 6 weeks before building. Praise the Lord it's finally coming to an end. reed
  11. I'm headed to the Smokey Mountains Saturday on the bike. They stated this may all happen within the next two weeks. I told him to call me the minute it is completed and I will do him first thing and bump whomever I have to, to get him finished once and for all. reed
  12. New To the Forum

Welcome Tim. Sit back and enjoy. reed
  13. The latex won't adhere to the oil. I recommend a "strip". reed
  14. Haven't tried the Osborne yet, where can you get one? reed
  15. I remove as much as possible. I use the defelting pads and palm sander. I really do try to get rid of 98% of them or better. Just makes the deck look so much cleaner and detailed. reed
  16. Rant on Rick. I have had two acryllic removal jobs in the past two weeks. No way to describe it but that stuff sucks. On the first one, found two boards that had rot under it, the deck was two years old. The second one, took 20 gallons of stripper at super plant/grass killing strength to budge it, then had to do a lot of sanding to get off what the sealer couldn't budge. Plus, found the name "Jane" written in the acryllic when the first layer came off. I absolutely will NEVER except another one of these, yeah right, too time consuming to do. The result was great but the PITA factor has to come into play. I feel for ya Rick. reed
  17. Fence looks great. I agree, you probably won't see the old remnants of stain once you finish the process. reed
  18. Great result Ken. The Aussie oil definitely has a place for wood like that. reed
  19. You usually can defurr the next day. Wood should be dry enough for defurring, but not for staining. what you have experienced with some wood being wet after stripping a section is normal. Don't worry about it. Also, you can brighten/neutralize after the entire deck is finished, but I do a final rinse before the brightener just to make sure all the wood is wet. reed
  20. Bill, replace the wood first, then do your cleaning/stripping followed by brightening. This will help you to remove the mill glaze on the new wood. The new wood will not hold as much sealer/stain as the old wood. Also, make sure you defurr (if its Cedar). reed
  21. Solid tips

I use sponge rollers when rolling and feather out the edges. Same when you use a brush for cutting in, feather out the brush stroke. This keeps lap marks away. reed
  22. I tell the customer of the products I offer and I do not use over the counter products unless I am certain of them. There are only two products over the counter I will use, Deckscapes Solid white and Cabot's Aussie Timber Oil. I offer my products and if they want something else I politely tell them to hire someone else. This was the case for the gazebo with Aussie oil, homeowner wanted penofin and I said I would use the Aussie oil and he went with me and was very pleased with the result. reed
  23. That's absolutely horrid looking. reed
  24. Where did you get this info? I would be interested in reading the info at the source. reed
