Practice deck
James replied to KGILL's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
Looks fine. What is the bottom photo? -
Between 20,25 gallons. The deck is to big to maintain. I came up with a every 3 month plan to maintain the finish and have added a super mildcide to prevent mildew from killing it. Will see what happens?

Politics and Politicians

Getting in over your head, pricing way too low, not doing a test spot before giving a price, houses to close together, not understanding plants and what chem's do to them. Break downs are a function of the business . Carry two of everything. Practice on friends and relatives .

James replied to YVPW's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
jason , very busy and taking care of a lot of ipe. I personaly like Cambara because it can absorb the most oil of all the hardwoods and i mean a lot. There is a photo here somewhere of the deck ( deck castle in the wood care threads). -

Stain issues for you "Woodies" out there
James replied to John T's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
John, it takes 2 years to figure out if you like a stain and how it works on a deck. Houses are different and a bigger step. I have to get comfortable with a stain on a deck before it goes on a house. I've done houses up to 3 times now and the Same decks over ten times. Understanding how a product functions and how to maintain it is most important factor in wood care. Not name recognition . Cabot is one product I strip the most because it is marketed and is a New England product. Every house I maintain had Cabots on it? Owners of paint stores are not experts or do they no much about the products they sell . Just got brought it on a problem / failure of a product and a so called expert of a high end paint store. The steps taken to resolve the issue were plain stupid. The failure was by the builder ,then the expert not the product. A decision you have to make is switching to a preservative type product instead of a topical protector which would be much better and a niche in Long Island. -

A two step approach using an alkiline cleaner then an acid works very well. -

New Cedar Deck - Can't get the Gray Out!!
James replied to Norman99's topic in DIY'ers - Ask The Pro's
Don not use bleach now it's to late !!!!!!! You will cause more problems for your self. You done too much already just buff and move on. If you did you bleach you probably furred the wood more. Oh well............. -
New Cedar Deck - Can't get the Gray Out!!
James replied to Norman99's topic in DIY'ers - Ask The Pro's
Bleach works better on newer cedar. Better off buffing it dry until you get good at. Yes ,3m floor pad. You can cut them to size. There are some other pads similar to 3m used on wood . In the sanding department of a hardware store. If you do oil it in its present condition it will be a little blotchy looking but not bad looking. Did you fur up the wood or is it just grey blotchy areas? I ask becaused you used sodium hydroxide .
