Number one you cannot get 2 coats of ready seal in new cedar. So if you did that is why you are having issues . On new cedar if you over apply and you think it's ok the sun will heat up the oil at the surface and it will ooz back out attracting dirt and everything in the air. It becomes a magnet for filth. The easiest way to care for cedar is to wash it yearlyand apply one coat of half light brown and half clear mixed. It looks natural with just enough pigmt not to to wear.

Pre-weathering Wood or not
James replied to rwhat's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
Most information you read about wood ( mainly cedar) and weathering is in regards to using films no matter how far you go back. Nothing relating to using oils. If wood sits and gray's due to weathering and you don't know how to prep the wood correctly those are the points were it will fail. I do a lot of new cedar and use oils. The out come and longevity of the first finish applied is directly related to how long it was allowed to weather. I let it sit 6 months to a year. The longer the better. If you let it sit 6 months you'll get one light to a medium coat in the wood. At one year two light coats. Have to go a basket ball game >>>>>>> -

what to do about mildew deep inside wood?
James replied to randy miller's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
The only mold i've seen that penetrates deep is a Black Rouge fungus that happens during severe wet periods and is brutal to remove. The only way is with strong sodium hypochlorite and then buffing. I have had to deal with this a couple of time over the last ten years and have helped others around the country to tackle the problem. Most routine molds/mildew stay at the top within the layer of degradation and start building up not into the wood. They will leave stains but I find most stains are from decomposing matter from leaves and other debris that pile up. -

Maybe the woods got some stainage on um ? Sum dews leave bad stainage. Mountain dew is very strong. Many ways to tackle that there stainage's. Use sum acidics after bleach'en. Sum stainage don't go away! Happy new year. -
Acid concentrations
James replied to Tonyg's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
In my opinion maybe because I strip a lot of cedar and hard woods I don't even use citric acid because I find it doesn't work well enough. I do understand the point of being safer. I find I can just use a weaker ox solution in cases of just brightening the wood. I also use Phosphoric and Hydrochloric in some cases to neutralize . Some difficult stripping requires a stronger acid to off set the stronger stripper(EACO chem products). -

Removing Fur
James replied to extremeclean's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
3m pads come in different grits. Different ones work better for hard woods and some better for soft woods. The 60 grit screens work even better if you get them not to tear and bunch up. -
Removing Fur
James replied to extremeclean's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
It is a no brainer. I have a 12 inch and a 18 inch floor machines. Janitorial supply will carry 3m pads and rental places have them. For hand held buffers I used to buy the largest pad and cut my own out. I can buff a 1000 foot cedar floor in a hour. -

Cooking Oil from Deep Frying Turkeys
James replied to AZPowerWash's question in Residential Pressure Washing
Some times easier to replace a paver. Or use a poultice to draw out the stain and what Tracy said works better. Couple of years ago I had a customer do that to a cedar deck and they waited till spring to to tell me. No wait, I found out when I came to do the maintenance. OMG !!!!! What a disaster .............. -

James replied to John.Harper's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
You can mix pre-carbs and sodium hydroxide . It works pretty good. You can mix bleach and sodium hydroxide very good mixture.
