IPE' Deterioration
James replied to acegot's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
All species look the same after cleaning. The lighter the color in the hard wood category the lest resistant it is to decay. This is very prevalent in the Mahogany species. That is one of the reasons for the Kerf on the bottom of Mahog. It rots at the joist intersection and the Kerf lets it dry out. I had a bunch of 8 year old Mahog rot out from the bottom up this year. Ipe specie is still different with the light colors. I have seen no degradation in a deck I take care of thats 20years or older, no sealed ends, on the ground in most areas and about 4000sqft of it. I also stopped sealing it a few years ago. I just clean it and buff now !! -

Those metal shards are a royal pain! Even though you think you get them the rust re-appears because it's to difficult to get them all ? Photo looks similar to ipe'. -

That wood is also extremely porous. Most likely wood take RS up to 50 /75 sqft per gallon. Been there done that same type of deck. -

Lyle, That doesn't look like IPe ? The degradation looks like what happens to Mahogany and Cambara type hardwoods which I've seen both. You cannot force a screw through Ipe and the end cut doesn't look like Ipe. -

Behr Stain - Removed - Cleaned - Stained
James replied to PressureWashE's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
John, If you want a light color and the wood needs more oil cut the light brown with clear and you still can go over it with just clear oil to better preserve the wood and obtain a light color. For light colors and a more Natural look I cut the colors with Clear RS. Preserving the wood correct the first time makes everything easier the next time. Not using the correct amount of oil the first time makes everything in the environment collects faster on top of the wood. Even though it's protected the surface will look crappy quicker.- 22 replies

The Commercial Real Estate sector is next. 1.4 Trillion in loans due between 2010/2012. This whole sector is in the POOPER. In order to save money Facility Managers are advising people to use both sides of the Toilet Paper ? What a Bummer !

Deck cleaning. What am I missing?
James replied to firepaint's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
I have to ask ? Did u do many decks working at your past job before going SOLO ? -
It is absolutely horrible out there. The job market Blows. I just did work for a regular client (high end recruiter )and her Biz is off 60%. Next year no better ! State , town and City budgets are being whacked ( no revenue steam) with layoffs to follow ! America doesn't make anything anymore . Ct has lost it's manufacturing base and were loosing all sorts of other type of jobs. The out look for jobs in Ct is maybe it should start to recover by 2012 ? Wall St and the other Exchanges do not reflect what is going is going on in BLUE COLLAR America any more.If they are doing well it's not reflected in our economy! Because American Corporations are Global and there profits are made outside of this country. It's sucks ! It all started with NIXON !!!

Recommendations on cleaning this deck
James replied to Roishe Cheng's topic in DIY'ers - Ask The Pro's
Mr Adams, big Mike is one of the more knowledgeable contractors that gives advice here on the board and has earned the respect of his peers.I advise you to do more reading concerning wood and the use of different chemical before you start quoting the anti christ of wood care and pressuring cleaning" ask the builder" . He is not a contractor and gives advise to the weekend warrior . -

This Thread is getting pretty ridiculous and it's old. Mr Orr gave the best advice with the bleach answer. Pre- Carbs are a waste of money, product and time on solid surfaces (but it does work). Hot water would work better than a precarb and faster. You can use a combo of NOAH and bleach if the black was embedded in the paint. Carry the correct stuff on your truck and use what the job needs. And don't do what the "ASK the builder Says"" There are Best , oK, and I wouldn't do that answers but they all work in the end. -
