Withdrawal fix
James replied to RPetry's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
I am having big trouble. I have a house that can not dry out. Love when you get rid of nail bleed on cedar and it rains for two weeks straight returning the nail bleed ! -
Help! Need to get Cedar wood even brighter
James replied to Rob R.'s question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
With cedar and other woods the natural extractives leach out and evaporate overtime. So even if you removed the degradation on the surface the next layer of wood may appear darker. Sanding or buffing is the only way to reach bringing out the natural colors of the wood again. This is more apparent with hardwoods. -

The more the UV degradation and age of the wood the less fuzzing you get. It comes offf easier ! -

James replied to mrmichaeljmoore's topic in DIY'ers - Ask The Pro's
$600 dollars 3 hours work maybe done the same day? Ipe dries fast. Maybe 4 hours you have to wait for the product to set up and wipe excess off. -
I like Seattles Best and I do stop at starBucks. I stop at StarBucks because it's next store to Victoria's Secret. I grab a cup and watch the smiley faces with their new bag of tricks come out of the store and into Starbucks or just walk on by my bench. It's fun !!

Need some help... streaks on paint.
James replied to Bennyhonda's question in Residential Pressure Washing
The streaks most likely are from caulking that has bled down and has turned black. Some type of degreaser or butyl cleaner will work. -
Rod, I have seen Great marketing campaigns by new companies just in the Biz. I am answering there questions as we speak!!

I was making a generalization about the web which is a fact and not about Dan. Some people have a great site first and grow into there site as they gain experience. Thats part of marketing? I do have an incomplete site which still gets me work. I have reached a new level of referral work this year that just goes with experience and networking ,very interesting and not expected!

One negative about the WEB. It can make anybody look impressive with out any credibility !

2009 business?
James replied to charlie's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
Guy's ,this is mild compared to last year . Not even close to how bad it was. Yesterday I cleaned a reg. maint cust i coudn't do last year. They had a green slime coating on all thier wood, and roof, and blue stone. Continuous moisture and no sun takes money away and brings more back? I still hate wood care! -
oxalic reclaim
James replied to zapp's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
The acid won't be the problem. That stays in the wood when neutralizing. It's the other stuff when stripping and pressure cleaning it off. -

Armstrong Clark and TheSealerStore Contest!
James replied to Scott Paul's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
I think it"s fine for the Supplier to supply a web site so you can post photo's. I don't think a special area on the Grime Scene for AC wood be fair to all the other suppliers of products. Thats what web sites are for? -
Sikkens strip job, new white cedar playset in Charlottesville VA
James replied to Beth n Rod's topic in Contractor Help Wanted - Job Leads
The black is from the butt end of the wood where there was no finish and it sucked up stripper. Then not enough acid can get in there to get rid of the Tannins and Neutrailize .- 20 replies

I do much new wood. That grey will not come off with chems or pressure. There is a point at which it has to be taken off with buffing . If the deck was done at the 6 month point a bleaching and a rinse could be done. After that it depends on many factors and choice of products. When wood starts to grey. It's just that grey and it hasn't broken down enough to be removed with pressure or chems. Increasing either causes more problems. When a new deck is built I give the customer a schedule of when I have to oil to avoid this problem. The deck that I just competed was at 8 months and had some minor firing which my defurnomore machine took care of

Ipe' stain shoot out
James replied to RPetry's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
Reds and black colors blend better with dirt and mildew giving the appearance it looks better and what Ken said about there being more pigment per volume of oil for red or any darker color is true. If you do a lite Bleaching and rinse on either of the colors it would bring them back even or give you a better evaluation of the product. The Grey pigment I use is by far the best and longest lasting I use and easiest to redo. It is amazing what a little bleach and water does after two years !!
