Dan ,many things I say now I have said for over 10 years. It's the results of doing repeated maint's and concluded which way is best for the customer and me. I was taking care of hardwoods before they became popular. Which was trial and error but I could tell what was the wrong and difficult way. I still take care of the very first Mahog deck and it looks GREAT. Rain is stopping off to strip an UpayME deck. Stripping now ! Clean and oil in the spring.......... Sir Knowledgewood, your source of wood wisdom !!

dan, Mahogany becomes very porous with age it will suck up large amounts of oil. It's the main reason I would not use a straight drying oil that penetrates beyond the surface. It causes maintenance problems if you don't have a maintenance plan. For this reason WoodRich is the better selection. Also the wood fibers suck up the (non drying oil) re bulking them with moisture instead of having something just drying around them ( drying oil). I take care of large amounts of Mahog..........

the quickest way to strip a deck
James replied to perfect power wash's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
Ken, it's like trying out new methods for stripping or a new stripper or down streaming a stripper. Bleach takes practice and is easier to use and is more affective than a precarb. Once you learn how to use it precrbs will be history. I can't count the number of converts any more to bleach. -

Cover is not my photo and it doesn't look like a hardwood. Some mis information from the interview but well done over all. Most photos are Ricks. I gave them some great photos not used . -
Sometimes you get a call from one spouse and the other didn't know. Then they get nasty to the other about spending money. I got a call the other day about a deck from a lady and when I called to say I was coming over to quote it. A man answered and started to get indignant with me on the phone about his deck and wife. He didn't know anything about it......

the quickest way to strip a deck
James replied to perfect power wash's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
Quickest way to strip a deck is too know what the product is that your stripping, Have done a test spot to determine if it's doable , understanding dwell time, The more experience you have will determine and allow you to make the correct decision . Experimenting with different products and different methods and what type of equipment you have should be added to the equation . -

There is a transportation company around me with the acronym G.O.D. Guaranteed overnight delivery. I's all over their trucks... Most of my clients are Jewish or they where when I was strictly doing window cleaning and a good portion is now. I was also approached by one of my clients to do some advertising in one of there newsletters because I had a great reputation amongst the population. $$$$

Test spots for Wood Restoration( DECKS)
James posted a question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
With the change in the VOC laws. The last 5 yrs also have brought many changes to sealers. With the addition of Silicone and Acrylics is has made Wood Restoration very difficult and time consuming to figure out what direction to take. Doing a test spot is a must and you have to carry many to see what works. Because the home owner usually doesn't remember what was put on. This year I have had 5 decks take an hour to figure out what to do and still be not sure I was correct. I was also it seemed the the last resort for these people because that had gone through many other opinions or had already tried and failed at a resolution. This problem is only going to get worse in the future. I am starting to charge for test spots 50 to 100 dollars and give an opinion how to solve the problem. -
Prices going up sets a tone for Middle America which is now lower middle America to stop spending. The Rich are still spending off to complete a marble restoration........

I have an E-350 with a tow package with a Hundred 130k no problems. I pull a trailer and water. I traded a Ram Nightmare 150 for it. Put a tow package on it very important.

Test spots for Wood Restoration( DECKS)
James replied to James's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
I carry a sample of many types of stripper and some that can go 24 hrs. Plus other means of commming up with a solution. I have become a consultant out of being a respected pro anyway. It's time to get paid for the trouble and for the solution. I'm batting 100% at the present time for wood restoration jobs anyway. Test spots are to time consuming now. Dan, I don't do any wood restore without test spot. -

Ipe' Nightmare for home owner
James posted a question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
I just got off the pHone with a potential client and I've had a few of these this year, that blows my mine of how much money they've spent on their deck. 1) Penifobia 2 coats turned black. 2)Stripped off. 3) Spa n Deck saster !! 4) Professionally sanded off after many other attempts of problem solving . 5)Aussy Sap Fluid 6) me ...... the deck is huge The deck is now 4 years young !! Pen was put on too soon, Spa nightmare, ATO was put on too soon after sanding -

Cedar Shake Shingle House, My First, Any Tips?
James replied to fireandrain's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
A house like that you have to do test spots to see what will work best. The area below each shake might be a pita. So do test spots!!
