For all you stain manu. these are the elements I have to deal with each winter.
James replied to plainpainter's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
Mostly Thompson's Water seal. Main't every year to 18 months. Wax On wax off. I find it much easier to maintain. -

Penny wise and pound foolish VOC laws?
James replied to plainpainter's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
Everything we do or use in pressure cleaning industry effects the environment. Weather it's the air we breath or the way water drains. How much garbage do we create from 5 gallon buckets? With all the New Roof cleaners killing mold with Bleach is that good for the "O zone"? Maybe it's better than making new shingles ?I was thinking last year I produce allot of garbage and what to do about it....... -
Dan , you live out side of Boston don't you? That is one of the best places to be located in the country. Lot's of big bucks. Every time you do a quote canvass the hood with some fliers. Don't waste your time by just driving out to a quote. Research the area ! Find all the great area's within 25 mile radius. Bring a bike with u and ride to hand out fliers. Find a public intersection 's and put a sign up. This works very well. I remember the grand old day's of Canvassing a Hood........ I can get by by doing quote's over the phone because I have reference in every town within a 25 mile radius. However; Easter sunday I did a quote because I was driving by a house going to an outlaw's for dinner. It was nothing like the phone conversation. Good thing I stopped. The house was much bigger and had lots of wood to be done.

neutraliztion before or after rinsing?
James replied to plainpainter's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
I have The spec book for Diedrich and they call for neutralizing after the multi layers are removed (full strength ) and again in 24hr's with a diluted solution of neutralizor due to the strength of the stripper. Then test the ph of the wood. I used a very strong stripper last year and had a terrible time getting rid of tannins on redwood. I used two different stripppers . The strong one I used for very thick area's of solid stain which worked great, but i couldn't get rid of the tannins. -

Dan , What would be the point? Unless u were trying to nuetralize Marlene Dietrich from stripping? Then a cold shower wood do !! -

Cedar Shake Strip
James replied to John Doherty's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
The most difficult cedar shake cleaning or restore is when half of the shake has stain on it and the other half is exposed wood with out stain on it. Do a test spot with bleach and water first. This should show if there is stain on the shake. If there is you have to find what dilution of stripper is right for the job without furring the crap out of the exposed wood. You have a small area of shakes to do so not that difficult to de-fur if you have to. Had my one year anniversary in Jan.. Many things hurt in the rib cage area when dealing with this industry ( twisting and different weights). I worked out pretty intensively over the winter to get back in shape ( very difficult). It's more of a mental challenge and to find out what you can and cannot do. Thanks for asking. -

How would you handle this?
James replied to copgib's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
I find 40 is too rough for spot sanding. For spot sanding I use brass brushes on a drill or the Ozzy Borne Brush . Or big scrappers after I oil it comes off easier. Brass brushes are very fast. -

I not sure what to do about using wOoDtUx on HardwooDs. From year to year it seem like where playing "Russel Roulette" with the formula ( no consistency). All the stuff I did in or with 2006 Formula looks better than the 2007 formula when fixed. Went and looked at a few decks yesterday. -

Methods on reaching high gutters to clean?
James replied to alvisishere's question in Residential Pressure Washing
I always recommend that the customer remove them so I can clean on the ground. They come out much better this way. -

BDA all the way!! Once you learn the way's of the Bleach Dweller's Association (BDA) there's no looking back. I use Pcarbs as a back up or for a Wookie (Wood rookie). -
Stain/Sealer recommendations for Pergola
James replied to ggreenwald's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
Grow some vines and forgetabout it. Pergola's are terrible to take care of. Build the top like a puzzle so you can remove it at sum point. Also u can put strips of copper at the very top . -

Make it out of red wood or alaskan cedar and let it turn grey naturally. you will get 25 years with periodic cleaning.
