Here comes the technology
James replied to plainpainter's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
With new technologies , new products and unrealistic marketing campaigns looking for victims. The only way to get a handle on product is testing them your self. Then you can ask questions ? -
Here comes the technology
James replied to plainpainter's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
Are you sure water based and water borne are different. They both mean water is the carrier of the solids instead of solvents? -
sanding decks
James replied to N.B. DECKS's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
There are many way's besides sanding to achieve the same results. Osborne brushes, buffing pads, defelting pads, buffing machines, and other machines. You don't have to set the nails with these methods. just give the nails a whack if the need it. The results from sanding or buffing will be evident for a very long time. Once you restore the appearance and then preserve the integrity of the wood. A good maintenance plan will keep the deck looking great for a very very long time. -
Some teak furniture...
James replied to Beth n Rod's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
Very nice job. -
That is a very easy fix . Just bleach and rinse to maintain the grey look and in 6 months it will be mildewy again. After bleaching it will look almost white. The grey comes from dirt and mildew.

Cedar shake cleaning and maintenance
James replied to Whorner1's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
Bill, Safety is the number one priority with shake roofs. Then there will be a learning curve. Try to start with a small roof or an easy pitch. You can do a allot of damage if you don't take your time. -

Osborne brush or 60 grit sand paper
James replied to dperrin's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
Once you no how to use bleach there's no going back. It's funny to watch a whole new generation of woodcare people being brainwashed by the lignin scaremongers selling ( Precarbs) on the internet. Or woodcare web site's dedicated to the ill effects of using Bleach without any knowledge of how to use it or not how to use it. Just that they were told! It's only a benefit to know how to use it. -
Osborne brush or 60 grit sand paper
James replied to dperrin's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
Be careful of the Osborne brush because you can burnish the wood. This will effect the penitration of the finish. I like the 3 m pads better. -
Follow up on ipe deck staining
James replied to PressurePros's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
Ken, you have and do go around on all the site's bashing every other product for hardwoods. It's funny to watch this little marketing engine work and just to make this product seem like Nirvana. My issue's with Russel reflects every persons issue's with the product and him. I deal with facts and real world application of a products. People in the industry seek out my opinion on this very issue and give me products for review because of my expertise and integrity. I use this product and will probably continue to use it and give my opinion and I hope it can get better. At this time the positive is it looks great and you can put it down soon after a deck is built. Everything after that is crap shoot with Maintenance. I think I've come up with a solution but it will take a year to see if it works. If the product doesn't go down after a deck is built and the wood turns grey there is major prepping (buffing). After the product is applied and let go for 18 months it's probably best to strip it off and re buff. Already had to do that!!So the window of re-application (maintenance) between 6 and 12 months is critical to a maintenance program. Is this Product any better Than TWP, READY SEAL, MESSEURS, ATO and PENOFIN. No, It all comes down to knowing about hardwoods and the maintenance of the product. Ken , because you sell a product your views and opinion are Skewed. You just don't want issue's to come because of the internet and where it might come up. I have two years now with this product on allot of IPE with more questions than answers and no confidence in the supp- liar. -

Dan, all the decks I did last year look pretty bad at 8 months and some at 6 months. Maint. will be a huge issue after a couple of redo's. One good thing is it comes off like butter. Is that good or bad? It started to break down an absorb water at 4 months. Will there be a new formula this spring? So far I have been very disappointed with the results but I'm using it with regret's. -
Let's see the housing market is in the toilet (American Standard). That effects everything to do with building a new house or remodeling. The prices of houses are way over inflated due to the low interest rates of the last ten years or so( houses bought for 250K are now 4 to500k after 5 years). That means property taxes have gone sky high . Many people can not afford the price increase in taxes added to their mortgage along with food, energy and every thing else associated that has increased. Mortgages were given out to anyone who applied. So now we have foreclosures and bankruptcies going threw the roof. The whole Real estate market is in a recession and we haven't seen the total effect yet. This is but one segment of the economy. Not every area of the country will be as effected as others. Attorney's are laying off and so are architects, banks, appraisers and mortgage companies are closing up shop. Not to mention all the skilled tradesman who can't find work. I see a whole new addition of lowballers coming !

What's the coldest temps you've applied sealer/stain
James replied to CLASSICPW's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
With Ready Seal I've sealed in the low 40's but in direct sun light. I also sealed a large job on the North side of a house in early Nov, and it stayed oily until April ( never saw the sun). The sun is important because it will dry up the moisture and heat the surface. -

Oak leaf stains on driveway?
James replied to Gleaming the View's question in Residential Pressure Washing
I use Tanninator with bleach for stone surfaces and Tanninator with acid for wood. -
Sparky , looks like you got in over your head. You didn't do a test spot on the deck or had experience with a cedar shake roof. Your responsible for your employes pay . Maybe if you find someone who can handle the job . From this board or your area you can work out a deal. Otherwise you have problems. Why should he pay for a un-stripped deck , a streaked walk way and an incomplete roof job. Try for your workers pay and call it a learning experience.

Woodtux vs. timberOil
James replied to plainpainter's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
This goes back to being able to understanding the difference between Drying -oils and non- drying oils. Film forming , non- film forming and solid the content of a product( how much goes into the wood or how much stay's on top). Dan, on all of the WoodTux projects I did this year. The finish seems to break down after a couple of months and starts to absorb water. Even the so called new batch. I have grave concerns with the changes that happened. Because the new stuff is no where like the old stuff. The less you used per 100 sqft the faster the failure. Anything that is easy to remove does not have the ability to hold up to UV ray's and weathering. I can not believe how easy Woodtux is to remove even after just applying??? I spent 2 years doing trials with this product and it completely changed over night. The first deck I did looks better than all the decks I did this year. I had a very good year but this product caused too many headaches and I will have a few more in the spring to deal with.
