Don't Let Your Builder Prep The Ipe Deck
James replied to PressurePros's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
Ken, what is emulsification of sugars and oils? And in the case of WTW and how long it last and the maint. of. Let's say it is not Nirvana and has been way over hyped . I had less issue's my own way. It's scary to here of what other's are doing for maint.Stripping the finish off or sanding off. The 3 I did last year I concluded it's better to remove the finish but they are easy 5 to 6 hundred sqft. Not one person I taked to has gotten a year out of the product on Ipe'. Now I'm having mold issue's with it. I think the only way a deck can last 18 months with WTW(ipe) is in a dream or on a covered porch thats not walked on. The other scary thing is how much I used this year on large decks. I do not like leaving a deck with doubt -
Don't Let Your Builder Prep The Ipe Deck
James replied to PressurePros's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
Kevin, your advise seems to come from the back of a Sealer's can or something you just read from the Western Red Cedar Ass woodcare check list.. When I started dealing with Ipe there was stuff (sealers) just comming on the market or had no history to believe in. So I came up with my own method's.You advise and I give advice from fact ( trial and error). I don't use these boards as much as I did . People just call me because of my expertise with sealers and wood. For the most part" I'm dead on". As for WTW, Rus has the photos and product was given. I didn't handle it on the boards. I was looking for others views which was confirmed with phone contact. You have a theory about Ipe' . I have probably the most experience with it. The only thing being done with a sealer on Ipe is to pervent it from turning grey! You will see the different views develope over the next few years concerning WTW on Ipe. You will see views change when some people get over 5 years experience with it. It's more fun to see people's views change with Ipe to the way's I stated a few years ago about dealing with it. -

Plugs on a deck are a pain in the Donkey. They shrink and swell different than tha boards . OK for inside but not in the outside. I used a 160 pound buffing machine with 3m pads this year on Ipe' that worked very well. Finishes on ipe' do much better if you wait to apply. More prep work but the results and longevity of the finish is better. It also depends on the product to be used -

7-25 year guarantee
James replied to hack's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
Scott , I have read alot this year about this. And a lumber company selling this such service as a pre sealer like Pressure Treated Pine and saying it can be treated with an oil. I have not come up against it yet in the east. -

New Pressure Treated Wood
James replied to tigerzak's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
The funny thing is I'll talk to somebody with 10 years service that can't use or wil try bleach? Because of the woodcare Alarmist! Then they see the work of the BDA and say Ma Ma Me Ya..........! This year I solved one of the bigest problems in woodcare. All type's of top level's of wood pro's were involed. A deck sealing company, A sealer maker, the forestry, then I got called. Me solved it !! Pretty funny lissening to all the jargen here. What was the answer? BLEACH......................YAH !! You can do anything you want but don't step on my BleAcheD SWadE ShoeS....... -
New Pressure Treated Wood
James replied to tigerzak's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
Beth,Actually that 's what have alway's said about bleach and all woodcare chem's be proactive and know how to use them. I alway's have to fight the the Alarmist group attitude about bleach. -
New Pressure Treated Wood
James replied to tigerzak's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
Look woodcare has basicaly 5 chems that you should know how to use . Bleach, NOAH, Potassium Hydroxzide, Pre-carbs and acids. Knowing when and how to use each is an advantage not a disadvantage. It's pretty simple. Bleach Dwellers Association " BDA" our motto is "Supremecy in woodcare". We have a USA and European division. -
New Pressure Treated Wood
James replied to tigerzak's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
Precarbs are a waste of time, money and effort on especially new wood . They darken the wood and raise the grain. Are they safer? yes! Are they terible at getting rid of mold? yes! Is bleach easy to learn ? Yes! Do it the BDA way! Keep bleach in your truck! -

New Pressure Treated Wood
James replied to tigerzak's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
Scott, I wasn't offended !It's an issue that I've been defending for a long time. It's an issue that has been Skewed. Instead of learning how to benifit from it's use (bleach). The negative is alway's brought up with the worse case scenerios. From people who do not use it or do not know how to use it or from companies who sell precarbs. Propaganda...... -
New Pressure Treated Wood
James replied to tigerzak's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
Scott , I'm tired of answering the bleach propaganda machine. I guess you missed the long debate. I will only say I have cedar, PT, Mahog, Ipe' decks 10 years old with bleach being the only cleaner and no wood loss ever and look at Shanes work! Once people learn how to use bleach there's no turning back. There are more problems associated with using Precarbs and Noah. I can show you photo's of bleach used correctly. Any chemical not used correctly will have an effect on the lignin. Any chem not rinsed correctly will have an effect on the sealer. Any company selling cleaning chem's put down the use of bleach. -

James replied to keepinitclean's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
I have done many furniture projects (teak) with RS and have tried WT last year. I prefer RS on teak. I have sets of furniture done every other year for the past 10 years. -

Do a lite bleach cleaning and rinse. Precarbs darken the wood to much and make you brighten. Do it the BDA way! Bleach Dweller's Association...... -
Why am I using WTW?
James replied to plainpainter's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
Dan you need to talk to people who have sucsessful maint biznesses. Ken is still a novice with this part of the field and has a one sided opinion. I on the other hand have decks that have been redone 10 times. I make more on maint and use less product and oil is better for the wood. It's a no brainer! If you have 300s deck to manage that turn into house washes and other cleaning's. Then this decreases advertising and increases referals. I have used the least amount of oil this year and have completed more jobs. Dan, go with your gut it's correct!!
