cleaning composite
James replied to douseahouse's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
Mold is the basic problem with composites. The longer they (customer) go between cleanings the stronger the bleach has to be. I clean one of the biggest display's 6000sqft for a builder that tried a composite cleaner( waste of money). Just add some soap from your house wash mix. Then get them to clean it every year. I think sealing is going to be a must because of staining from grease . Mold developes fast and travels deep on composites.Man have I seen some bad composites!! Important note with bleach cleaning keep the strength of the solution constant. If your xjeting with a 5 gallon bucket and spill some out of the bucket on the deck. What happens? I saw some guy saying he uses 250 degree steam to clean composite?? and another who leaves a precarb on for hours. -
Your a wimp!I have some work on the Massoftwoships boarder we'll see.

Dan , that's if want to see RS. I have decks ten years old.

I think people have to discern for themselfs and the reality check will be in a couple of years. In the mean while Russel is open game for opinion and debate. He make's it fun comming to the board Marketing a product without much history. Then He and a few maybe guilty of over zealous marketing of WTW? All I care about if I charge some one 2 grand and in 3 years it cost 3 grand to remove. Now I'm like Sikkens, Cwf, Cabotage' ect.... It doesn't fit my Business model. I only strip ONCE!!! Not something I put on.

I have RS jobs that have gone 4 Years and could be oiled the same day of the cleaning. What's that mean? It was still working!! I have 10 decks in varying degrees of Testing with WTW on them. Different wood types, appying after 2 month,4,and6. Putting RS down first and WTW on top. And WoodRick on one deck. Why? I've talked to Russel and I have done alot of testing. It's worth a try. My skepticisum is as a Wood Expert with many years of knowledge. Is what do we strip off all the time? Products that form barriers and films. Why? Because they degrade, trap moisture and have to be stripped( TheyCause more problems over time). Layer's were built up over something that you can't build layer's over.Once this type of finish is applyed nothing goes beyond that point( into the wood). What does WTW do ? Time will tell ! Woodcare is a craft that you evolve from the experience of doing Maintenance. Watching what happens over time to the wood type and finish type and being able to solve those issue's will give people the ability to make smart decisions. The majority of Wood restoration Newbe's quit after the second call back. Why? Because it's been 3 to 4 years and the finish needs to be removed and they just cleaned the deck then try to apply the product. Costumer very unhappy doesn't pay for work ect.... Year later they call me .

Paul , I agree there is not many qualified woodies out there . But there are many sucsessful operations with a different Business model based on perventive maintenance. Where the maintenance is more profitable and cheaper over the life of the deck. You have know idea what a deck looks like or what has happened after two years to many varibles> I build a better relationship with the customer and have Quality Control over the property by doing annuals. I still take care of my first deck (paid) done over ten time's with ABR and switched to RS. Never stripped, cleaned with bleach(BDA) and a lite moisturization. I have customers get irrational if I skip a year. They love the service.

Interesting Job Paul. Was that just built? If so how did you prep for the job? Are they going to screen in the porch?

Need Some Help w/ Ipe
James replied to Big Bill's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
Penofin Is easy to maint.- You just have to understand how. It's easy to remove and follow the directions on the can. Over appling causes the most problems. After applying the product to the deck twice it's probably best to remove and start again. In your climate the Rosewood oil maybe an issue with mold. A quick Bleaching for maint. does the trick if mildew is an issue. -
Need Some Help w/ Ipe

Penofin wood sealers have rosewood oil in them for hard woods. Very popular in the east for treating hard woods. Does the deck have a finish now or is it new? -
Sealer Composition
James replied to jnoden's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
Jon, who ever applied the product made many mistakes. It uneven, Lapped, doesn't look stirred properly. If a product wasn't mixed properly it causes stripping problems. Figuring that out takes many strip jobs . Don't bother stripping any more . Just sand the rest off. A good tip when doing a difficult strip is. If you see an area on the deck drying fast and not damp after stripping. This means you still have product to strip off. -
Yes TSP is worth a try.

If they could rent a vapor steam cleaner (Best) ? Or go to a stone supply store and pik up some some cleaner for the problem. I use Prosoco. Put it in some hand sprayer , apply, have brushes handi, keep wet. Rinse with another hand sprayer. Tape off area's with plastic and use plenti of towels. TSP works also

James replied to plainpainter's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
If they can't afford it. I tell them to save their money and have it done the next year. Because they know it's better to have their deck under my care. This works some time's. Look the best way to get wood jobs is to have a relationships with Deckbuilder's and builders. Today I was fed two Ipe decks who were expecting my call. Sold before I called. One owner said she already gave my number to her girl freind who had an Ipe deck built on the shore. I have changed the name of Ipe' to Upe' . If you are fed 20 new decks a year for five years that's 100 decks under your care!! But you have to know your stuff because people who build new high end decks have had terrible times in the past. Even though that is an issue the care of a new deck isn't thought of until after it's built ? -
Ken you have to look into the rug cleaning industry and the machines they use. Most rug companies do water clean up.

Good luck Carlos ! -
I always inspect the condition of the windows before I wash. This way you can see if it's your rinsing is at fault.
