Sealer Composition
James replied to jnoden's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
Ken, I'm really glad your opinion doesn't carry any weight with people who know what they are doing. Most of what you say is not factual or you can't back with fact. You try to portray something your not an expert with sealers. Now that you hawk Bakers Grey away on your website and have your relationship with Shane your opinions are biased. Your opinions are always slanted aganist Ready Seal. I can go back to all your post with Ready seal in them and there biased. I'm really tired of it because you don't have the experience to back up what you say. Now it's time to venture to the garden web to talk about over hyped stuff. This i'm very good at. I was healing fine and had to RAD this I mean read.I needed a spark Thanks!!!! -
Many men named Scott are named after (SCOTT TOILET PAPER).This came about when their Dad's where in deep thought thinking of names for the new arrival and in the reading room. With the thought process over and time to leave the reading room dad was out of toilet paper. Now pissed off about having to hop to the closet to retrieve a new roll!! He opened the door and sees Scott toilet paper and the name Scott Sticks. So every time he uses the John he thinks of his boy Scotty and has a good laugh !! Another Great Scott story!!

I would say 80% of my wood jobs are pre-qualiphied by the deck builders who just built the deck and refer me. Or by a deck I've done that somebody visited or the house I've done. My calls are by people who want the service. If they call three time's I know their serious. LOL...

I have a 2 bay garage w/heat, water and plenty of storage. A great guy owns the property. 5 minute's from my house , next door to a great breakfeast place and one minute from the highway. For a couple of years I drove by saying that is a great place for my stuff. Then I finally stopped in.

Paint or Stain?
James replied to PressurePros's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
Instead of a chem. Buy a Porter cable about 200 to 250. Or he can try the 310 Removal if there still around. -

Paint or Stain?
James replied to PressurePros's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
Depending how large of a deck. Take a porter cable paint remover ( one day) or a floor sander. -
Refinished my neigbor's front door
James replied to plainpainter's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
I also do and have stripped many cedar garage doors. The design and choice of product are the main issues with garage doors. And mill glaze is a huge problem. These 3 things cause early failure. Most people just reapply product which will compound the problem. -

Great looking work!. I think Front door's of a house can be a biz by it's self. -
Paint or Stain?
James replied to PressurePros's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
Solid Color Stains are basically a paint. They form films. The word" stain" is used to confuse joe public. -
Jeff , I 'm pretty sure you can make a living just off Hospital personnel.

It seems the direction of the PWNA and the way they handle business at the present time has created a void in the industry. Last year it was WRAPI that was developed ? A good idea and well thought out? This year GrassRoots due to the momentum of the ACR round table. A good idea? Seems like it. As far as marketing goes you don't need to have any experiance in power washing to teach marketing. Companies hire marketing companies to grow their biz's. Seem's like Ken can do that and Matt made a nice presentation. Plus there's a billion books and tape's out there on the subject and your local chamber and SBA. The technical side of Power Washing and all it's surfaces and sealer's and how to evolve from your knowledge is lacking. And how to discern the crap and being bamboozaled. This take's time and experiance at leased five years. Different segements of the industry take time to evolve and understand. Opinions formed from trial and error not unsubstantiated wisdom and theory. This you may get from someone who has done it once! I think a conference formatt or a tech seminar with the leading experts that have the BILLY factor ( creadibility) would be some kind of starting point. Since I started my biz I have attended other industry seminars and trade shows to keep fresh or to see how much I know. Alway's try new methods and sample stuff. Keeps the brain moving. It maybe time to share my woodcare innovations?

What did you do before becoming a Pw'er?
James replied to Beth n Rod's topic in Business Topics & Tips
Was a Quality Control Manager for a machined parts manufacturer. We produced parts for Automotive, electrical connectors, bushings, pharmaceutical industries ect.... My wife's family started a Window Cleaning biz in 1929. I started out part time doing residential windows on weekends 23 years ago. Went full time in window cleaning and held various night time and weekend jobs in quality control (first piece inspector, worked in a clean room, ups to name a few) for a few years to make ends meet. At the same time was a partner in a manufacturing start up. That didn't work out for me. Got to the point I didn't need a part time job. Added Power Washing in middle 90's. Don't have to advertise. -
Is the tech part of the board shut down ?

Wood Restoration class
James replied to C&S Property Services's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
I think that was for the class then you paid for the certifcation test. You had the combo meal!!. Are they offering the combo meal at the Pulp fiction expo. I see the deck industry benifiting not the Pwna? .. -
I would have to say number one is my marketing niche. I learned this approach twenty years ago and I use it today . You have to be very good because it also can ruin you. People who love to talk positive will also talk negative and black ball you from there group. Also if you can please the most difficult person of influence ( they are widely known also) it can be used as a marketing tool. I had two brutal people ( very rich) that most services would not service. They are still my customer's and have become my favorite people. I knew if I met their demands everything else would be cake. Today, all I have to do is mention the name's of these two people and I'm in. This summer I was refered to a Westport Ocean front home ( the gold coast) by a freind. People of influence. The lady of the house had a catered luncheon. I had not finished the work and I recieved calls for my service from the guest's of the luncheon. Just come and do the work !!

New 3500/5.5 from PressureTek
James replied to Neil_Asheville's topic in Tools, Equipment & Basic Maintenance
I run into water problems allot in CT. Many wells. I have a 4.5 to a 5 gallon a minute. If your stripping houses you will tax the system with the volume of water used. I have a 125 tank, 220 and a 300. Use common since in your choice. Knowing the depth of the well is important. If there not deep you will run out quick.
